Title: HRP Fishtales Restoration
Post by: el_timbo86 on August 02, 2011, 08:16:57 PM
Hey Guys,

The following is a visual diary of a Fishtales restoration I have recently completed. I havent gone into as much detail with this thread as I have done on my previous work, as they all essentially show the same process. If you have any questions though, feel free to ask  $!&

Starting out with the base game received from the client...(Yes this game started in my garage/workshop)

Typical fade/problems, but overall a solid base game...

This game was imported from Japan. These snaps are just to give you an idea of what the machine looked like BEFORE...

Again...

Again...

Fastforwarding a little here, game is torn down - parts will be organised into various categories - and sent out for specialised plating etc...

Cabinet is ready for refinishing...

Detailed below...

Refinishing...

Refinishing - i replace the nylon glides as well as the timber chocks as it has usually been pushed far beyond its limits...

Again...

Black base is applied, i chose to flatten the gloss so as to not take the game too far from its original glory...

Mate, that is simply awesome, inspirational stuff.

I really wish I had the time and skills to restore a pin like that.

I was lucky enough to see the pin in Tims workshop and the photos really don't do it justice.  Way better than NIB

Fantastic job mate!  ^^^

Outstanding and inspirational work, Timbo !

I really like the personalization with the instruction card (build number), the documentation envelope and the sign on the backbox. The felt on the headbox brackets is also a finer detail that is a great idea.

From the pictures, it is the best Fishtales I've ever seen. Lucky owner  ^^^

Absolutely incredible result, heaps better than a brand spanker, has the ply edge on the headbox been filled or coverd with a thin strip of something? as you can't see the laminations of the ply

"First class work" doesn't even do Tim's job justice - what ever comes above first class by a dozen levels would be about right. This game almost looks make believe, like a cartoon in real life it is simply so magical looking. Thanks for the photo diary Tim.

I cannot speak highly enough of Tim's work.  His skill and attention to detail are second to none.  No stuck on bling, hiding decal seams, cutting corners - better than factory.

The amount of hours which goes into these machines would be staggering, but for the end customer worth it I'm sure.  Like with Christoper HUTCHIN's work (High End Pins), I have no doubt Tim's work will command an amazing resale value - that is if the owner was ever to part with the game.

STD bulbs, LEDs don't transport well, already have heaps of cointaker LEDs ready to go

Personally, I would leave the standard bulbs, just so i could see n play the machine the way it was designed to first be seen as it came off the production line (lighting wise).

Also, if u do decide to do the full LED treatment, contact Andrew (Beaky) member here who has the special roms avail that will take care of the LED ghosting. Andrew tested the anti LED ghosting roms in both my fishtales and in my Star Trek Next Gen and it makes a big difference.

I dont have LEDs in either, but for testing purposes we added some LEDS to check the effectiveness of the anti ghosting rom and there was a very big difference.
I wouldnt LED a fishtales without the update rom which will cost you next to nothing.

cheers. Brett

Personally, I would leave the standard bulbs, just so i could see n play the machine the way it was designed to first be seen as it came off the production line (lighting wide).

Yes i agree, i dont really want to touch it, i like the look of the warm natural light also, and with the polished stainless the reflection should be blinding.

Stunning, but no FT is worth those $$$ unless you have more money than sense. Still, those people/buyers are out there. Seller might get lucky.

average fishtales with faded cabinet n good everything else is apx $2500.
add full set cabinet details $300, add labour to do job properly $500, machine now owes you $3300

then add brand new ramps $300, then add lots of new other bits n pieces $200 , now machine owes you $3800 and thats what a machine with the above stuff usually sells on ebay for in general nice condition.

$5100 minus $3800 is $1300 difference. Would I pay the extra $1300, making it a total of $5100 and buy that HRP brand new Fishtales, YES, all day long cause its been clearcoated and everything is like brand new.

I reckon its worth $5100 no problems at all. Its like brand new and possibly the best Fishtales in the world !  Thats how I look at it.

If you love Fishtails and have seen Tims work, then $5,100.00 is something of a bargain. Good luck to the seller, I know the buyer when he comes along will be happy.

Tim does awesome work.  I have first hand experience. There is a point where you overspend on a title and this is it.  I cant see how you woud pay 5k+ for a FT

No doubt so for most. But a $2k base game is going to take $3k plus to get to this stage. As I said, for a FT lover.

No way do FT sell for $3800 on ebay. I sold my FT for $2800. It had no cab fade at all, playfield with no wear, no broken plastics and all ramps great condition.
I love FT. It's one of my favourite games, but no way would i spend $5000 on any FT regardless of who has restored it.

a fully redecalled machine, with excellent everything, new legs, new coindoor, new ramps, new plastics does sell for $3500 to $3800 often.

a machine with original decals, even with colour, original ramps n coindoor etc etc will not get the same money. $2800 was probably around the money with original cabinet decals.

Tim's restorations are simply stunning.  a fishtails lover would want this.  I would definitely pay more for a HRP restoration pin if It was a title I had always wanted.  A guy offered me huge money for my T2 that Tim did.

+1

Perhaps Tim needs to start posting pictures of EVERY SINGLE STEP of his restoration process (rather than the highlights) in order to educate some of the armchair experts as to value.

This is a better than BRAND NEW example of a Fish Tales and is worth every cent.

Stunning, but no FT is worth those $$$ unless you have more money than sense. Still, those people/buyers are out there. Seller might get lucky.

As I have found from personal experience, there are plenty of buyers out there who are willing to pay for quality restoration work that goes above and beyond the factory standard (that is, a lot more than just throwing some LED's under a handful of inserts and saying look at what I did).

Stunning machine and amazing work to get it in that shape, for what it's worth I also think it is worth the $$$ for the work done on the pin.
FT is not for me but if there was another HRP for sale like a wh20 I would part with 5k for one.

Having seen the machine in the flesh I can say it is most definately worth every cent of the asking price, it was way better than NIB.  Just have to find a cashed up ft fan.  A better des cription may halp the sale though.
