Title: Solvents - who can add to the list?
Post by: pinnies4me on March 07, 2010, 01:45:34 PM
One area I find interesting is the different solvents we use for different purposes. Thought I'd list a few and see if we can create a comprehensive list of different types and the uses people have made of them.

Methylated Spirits
Turps
Acetone - probably a bit risky on any sort of paint or art, but good on metal
Eucalyptus oil - found it excellent in removing ball swirl with a magic eraser
White Spirits - removed some glues metho didn't

Anyone got good uses/do not use advice on the above and other solvents?

Lighter fluid
Shelite

works well on some glue etc without lifting paint

Isopropyl alcohol is a good one.

I have used it to clean off oils and gunk from EM leaf switches ( when newbie EM fixers have sprayed them with CRC or contact cleaners that leave residue).

Others have used it with Magic Erasers to scrub off ball swirl on playfields.

I'd like to add Lighter Fluid = e.g Zippo Lighter Fluid

And Shellite = Naphtha (the USA call it Naphtha)

Both the same product, I reuse a zippo lighter fluid can topped up with Shellite, much cheaper that way.

Thanks for this!!!!! I was going crazy looking for bulk Naptha in Bunnings etc & was about to post asking if anyone knew where I could find bulk. Now i'm going to go looking for Shellite. Any suggestions on where I can buy it in larger containers than zippo refills?

Shellite = Naptha.

I've been using it for years and it is the best "all round" cleaner.

Shellite
Orange Solvent
Nifti
Windex
Brasso
Goof Off
De-Solvit
Degreaser
Isocol
Isoprophyl alcohol
Ranex

That covers just about everything I use.

Surgical spirit is very good.
Simply tip it liberally down the throat and everything looks great.
