Title: Xenon Restoration
Post by: 63wizz on January 10, 2010, 01:01:49 AM
Ok Guys, its time for another Restoration, this time its a Xenon by Bally.

I got this machine from Ebay it was in Tassie, there was not many photos on the auction site, so i dont think he done himself any favors trying to sell it as i was the only bidder.

when i got this machine it was fully working, but in bad need of a shop out, the rubbers were perished and stuck to the posts, and it was just plain dirty.

The play field has a full mylar which i will be removing, i think it was installed by an op so i hope it comes off easy, there is some play field wear at the center out hole, the mylar is covering the wear spot.

So i have started to tear down the play field today and will asses the wear when the mylar is removed, once i have done this i will decide how to repair the wear.

As usual some pics of my progress so far.

I remember this machine. It has some "wear" on the girl's legs. That looks to be the hardest part of the playfield resto.

What's the backglass and body like ?

The backglass is near perfect and the body will need a bit of work.

Great machine, should come up nicely. These 80's Bally's are fantastic and deserve to be preserved. Love the infinity backglass as well.

Xenon is on my wish list this year. Keep posting.  ^^^

Stripped the mylar off the play field today, it came off quite easy, the only paint that came off was where there was play field wear.

I used the hair dryer method. The mylar was not factory fitted so i expect it came off easier.

Does anyone know if the factory fitted mylar pop bumper rings should be removed if the PF is clear coated, i have heard of nasty things when trying to remove these.

some pics.

I usually leave the mylar rings around the pops. They can get VERY nasty once the paint starts lifting - if it does.

If you are clearcoating the playfield, I would at least attempt to remove them.

Great progress so far  ^^^

I would say some one has tried before me, the top left bumper has paint lifted,

I have removed the mylar rings around the bumpers, i had some paint loss but not to bad i think.

i have given the pf a polish with novus 2, its come up very shiny.

now what to do to the main wear between her legs???????

I have made a decal to cover the worn patch near her legs, printed on sticky back paper and clear coated to stop it smudging.

I have decided to mylar instead of clear coating, a lot less trouble doing mylar.

I can't tell where the decal starts ?

Great Job - color matched and blended in to the point I can't even see it is there.

Yes, GREAT job with that decal ^^^ ^^^

only problem with doing this kind of thing and then putting on mylar is that the mylar might show up the edges of the decal. I had this happen when i used this idea on my Stern Lectronamo a few years ago.. stuck out like a 3rd nut on a greyhound!

Though in an area with so much detail as this you might be ok.

Hi all, been doing some parts polishing, using auto sol metal polish, have given them a good scrub with a scouring pad first.

I'm looking at printing some stickers for some wear areas on my Whitewater - what product did you use/or is best to clear coat it with?  Do i need 2 pac or will the acrylic stuff i have in a spray can be OK?  Did you also just use standad sticky paper (whatever that is!!)?

Hi robm

I printed on normal A4 sticky backed paper, then sealed it with septone clear before applying the decal to the machine,
i just used the normal bubble jet printer i have at home, some times the colour matching will not match up.
then i have applied mylar over the whole PF.

I have finished the PF restoration but i am waiting for RTBB to get in some more plastic posts, i have used some other plastic posts temporarily.

I have dismantled the cabinet, the back box is going to need re painting as the ply wood has cracks running up the grain and cracked the paint.
plus the cabinet has been knocked about a bit.

Hi guys, just plodding along with this resto, ive been doing a lot of polishing of parts by hand,no tumbler ^&^
I have sanded the head box back to timber, painted it black, made stencils, and have painted the blue colour, i still have the red to do.
i did get a bit of bleed with the blue,a bit pissed with that.
some pics for your amusement.

Wow...Thanks for all the pictures and step by step photos.  I found the way you did the wood cabinet artwork very informative.  I look forward to trying a restoration myself one day.

I used to play this game in a base recreation center in 81-82.  I do remember briefly developing a crush on the robot girl!   %.%

Looks like i will have to repaint the cabinet as well, seems the colours will not match the head.
The cabinet has a few scrapes and the front panel paint is stuffed.
It looks like the cabinet has had a clear sprayed over the paint, and it has started to lift in spots, and makes the black look milky.
what do you guys recon.

Ian.

You have done such a great job on the head it would be a shame to not do the body aswell.     Lots of hard work but will be well worth it ian  ^^^

If it is a keeper - I would not hesitate to re paint the body. The head would look different, so better to match them accordingly. A bit of extra effort, but it will be worth it in the end. Keep up the good work, Ian.

it just seems a shame to sand off the original paint, but to repair the wood work on the head there was no choice,
the red on the body has faded and does not match the new red on the head,
so i will have to repaint the body, and it will look fantastic, just a lot of work.

I have been busy tracing the cab art work and cutting out the stencils.

I have done some repair work on the cabinet, mainly around the neck of the cab as when the head is opened it has two sheets of glass in it and is very heavy, the bottom of the head was split and some of the neck due to the weight.

bogged and sanded all the original art work off the cabinet  !!!

and prepared it for painting later this week.

painted the light board white and replaced the globes.

Thanks Strangeways, The Black is a Wattyl solargaurd water base, and the colour has been spray packs, export brand i think from super cheap.

here is the front finished.

One word of advice if the stencil paint is 'export' brand, dont put anything like prepsol, metho or any harsh cleaners etc anywhere near the cab.. it will take the paint straight off!! i found this out the hard way on one of my cab repaints a few years ago (tried cleaning off a small amount of overspray). I never used Export brand paint again after that.

Sorry i dont mean to alarm you, just thought i should share my experiences using that paint.. its just not a good quality paint as i found out. Having said that though, Its very likely you won't have any problems with it and it'll look great for many years, (i used this paint on my Stern Lectronamo, its STILL looks just as good as the day i painted it about four yrs ago).

Thanks for the tips, this is the first time using export paint, i have cleaned some over spray off with shellite and it does remove paint if rubbed to hard and to long.

Ive got the young fella's birthday next weekend so i thought id better get my act together and finish putting my Xenon back together.
I powered it on and it fired up with out a problem, then i started a game and found one of the pop bumpers firing randomly. i adjusted the switch without any success. so i clipped the ceramic cap off and it works fine now.
also i found when the ball hit the left sling the right sling would kick and vise versa !@#, i had put the wrong kicker assemblys on the wrong sides !@).
A couple of other minor adjustment problems and all is well @@*

THE END.

No, no clear over the new cab art, ive repainted 3 machine cabs now and never done a clear over the art.

I am glad i repainted the cab but the stencil was a night mare to do as there is so much to cut out and it makes it so flimsy to handle, i ended up cutting it into 3 pieces and re join when stuck to the cab.
