Have the backglasses from Sterns classic (1980’s) held up over the years, or are they generally flakey by now?

Not too good Pete - they like to crack (letting light through), lift at the bottom if they have got wet over the years, and some just go powdery...
A dose of triple thick or equivalent holds them together if they are not too far gone.

Ralph67 ones look pretty good.
Bally dude is right though, shame. Quicksilver backglass is a ripper.

Reds and yellows can fade badly too. My Stingray BG, the reds have completely faded to white, (was that way when i bought it 30 years ago) other than that the glass is near perfect with no major paint flaking! just some minor scratching from the displays which i repaired.

Depends on where they were stored and how long they were operated.
I have 2 X Flight 2000 - One is very good, one is terrible. Flaked to death. The Freefall is absolutely perfect, yet the playfield is very tired. I have 3 X Trident, and 2 are faded badly and one is nice. The Lectronomo is perfect.

I'd recommend coating them with triple thick as soon as possible to prevent any future flaking. The Stern backglasses from the late 70s and early 80s, in my opinion, are some of the best pinball artwork and are definitely worth saving.
I'd say stern backglasses are no different in quality compared to any other Bally or Williams from the same time, the major contributor to cracking and flaking over time is how the machine has been stored over time.

My nineball and cosmic princess have flaked, cracked and reds faded.
