Here is another restore im currently doing. This one will be a long process no need to rush it and ruin it considering its age. Again this machine came from Mark c never expected to win but your snipe programs must have stuffed up again lol. This machine is missing its backglass and the cabinet had been resparayed but it looked complete. Once i had it home i set it up and gave it a once over and it fired into life was missing an arm for the match feature but found a replacement next time i visited mark. I removed the Stainless trims which covered the woodrails.

This is the first woodrail ive ever seen in the flesh let alone played. I love the manual ball return and the gobble holes what a great idea. For its age the playfield is in great condition i think. It has a badly yellowed mylar on it but im to afraid to attempt to remove it. Im still toying with the idea of removing it? What do you guys think?

The cabinet is in pretty solid condition except for the paint so ill strip it down and repaint it as original. I love the wooden door

Problem solved matt it will be working next time you visit. When i lifted the playfield the wires from the playfield to the main board fell across the tilt relay when i put it down. But i knew at least one would have to stuff up

Well for those of you who didnt see my other post on this i removed the mylar from Marathon after months of chickening out im pretty happy with the result as i only lost small areas of solid color but no writing yeahhh $#$

Then me being not being able to help myself i tried to remove the brown stain the mylar had left. I tried everything from Eucalyptis oil to some stuff i cant even spell from ZEDX (Thanks mate) Only thing that worked was to rub the top layer off the paint with either ISOCOL and ME or just using wetrub. Found wet rub to be best as i could apply more even pressure and cover a greater area. The 2 pics shows my attempt to use ISOCOL and ME at least i found out how far i could go lol !!!

And a few shots of the progress so far at the moment im just trying to get the blue areas to be similar all over its not worth the risk going to far with this after my first failed attemp. First pic ive sanded the right side only really shows the difference

Just after some input before i go any further on this. Should i sand and re laquer the top ball arch and apron or leave it original? The bottom arch is missing a section should i try and make the missing piece or just make a whole new one?

Ive found some photos of inside this machine this will all be cleaned up while the cabinet is stripped down for its respray

Well ive removed most of the PF inserts as they were all wonky but there are 4 large ones that i cant get out so ill just leave them there only a tiny bit below the surface. Ive jsut picked up a 45kg gass bottle for my shed heater so might get a bit more done when im not freezing my ass off. Pictures to come later

Well big improvement today removed all te inserts sanded of as much yellow muck as i could and reseated them. Didnt want to rub to far and lose the number so i just stopped when i started getting nervous *!@

i made a trip to Super Cheap for some pure Canuba wax i remembered reading in a post that Mothers Californian gold works well and i have to agree its great stuff.

After ive finished cooking tea and putting my son to bed i might start to reinstall the playfield parts getting exciting now $#$

I also attempted to fix the delamination on the bottom of the playfield its not dry yet so fingers crossed it works. I pushed wood glue as far down into the delaminated parts as i could them clamped it all together.

Well been hard at it for almost 12 hours today and im glad to say im happy with the results. But ive had to walk away before i smash something ive managed to loose one of the steel pieces and of course its not just flat plate its the crinkly looking one GGRRRRRRR ^.^ But enjoy the photos

Here are the plastic parts after a soak in hot water and dishwashing liquid, scrub with a toothbrush and then hit with novus 2.

GOOD NEWS $#$ I found the missing part. When i was pulling the machine apart i was putting all the metal parts into a Steel coinbox so i put a magnet in the center to stop all the screws and stuff going walkabouts which worked to well the missing part had magnetised itself to the wall of the cash box so no matter how much i tipped or shook it it stayed there LOL !!@

To be honest i cant tell you. I take photos with the flash on and off then just use whichever is the clearest but i do have a Fleuro Light Directly above where i work on them so either way there is plenty of light for the pics

Yeah i have thought about recoating the ball arch i have to sand back all the Woodrails and re laquer them so ill wait and see how they turn out with the dark rusty patches. I also have to either remake or repair the lower apron as its missing a small section. So ill wait till the cabinet respray and see how i go.

Well the playfield is almost done $#$ Just need to connect the bumper rings to the coils and either fix or make a new wooden apron and replace the playfield nails and a few guides.

Will send up with the other stuff when it's ready. Also noticed on game there is a beehive on the lower ball plunger - that isn't supposed to be there, so when you do your respray take that off and fill any holes (if any)

Yeah it does have a bee hive and two extra holes drilled so ill fill them and use the ball lift from the Continental Cafe

Well i cracked the shits with the Rock pinball and decided id do a bit more to marathon. I made up a dodgy piece of wood to complete the apron and connect all the pop bumpers and reinstall all the standup switches. Once that was all done it was ready for the big test..............
Guess what happened??

You guessed it. Didnt work grrr was fully working before i stripped it but wasnt once it was done. So i spent the night trying to get it going again finally got a game from it aslong as you dont score one point as the one point score reel is sticking. Hopefully i get a chance tomorrow the rebuild the reel and get a full game from the old girl.

Found a few little issues like one pop bumper occasionally sticks and a few relays are noise buat apart from that all the scoring and specials all work as they should. Once i strip it down for the cabinet respray ill rebuild the bottom of the playfield and relays but untill then it will be staying as it is.

Well the playfield is a done as its going to be until i do the cabinet respray so ive been researching what the original design looked like. Ive gound a photo of the original design which matches the flyer but im just unsure of the colors.
To me i think the side colors would be similar to the playfield colors but they are just faded and stained in the photo
What are your thought?

The playfield and the cab would of been built at 2 different spots in Chicago. From memory the only part that Gottlieb didn't make for their games was the cabs whih were contracted out.
Suppose it depends on how fussy you are regarding matching the exact colours....even a close colour match when all resprayed will look so much better than what you have at present.
Just be warned though - that respray will be a massive job that will take weeks *%*

Daniel - The photo is not accurate !
The siderails are varnished - not Red. Although your lock down bar should be wood, not metal. Maybe ask Mark if he has the original and swap it over ? chances are that the machine arrived like that..
I would repaint it.
But I would do a lot of research to ensure the restoration of the cabinet is faithful to the original. You could also remake the legs.
One hell of an undertaking, but the reward would be worth it in my view !

Tony put me onto a bloke who has a lockdown bar for sale but he has gone quiet so ill be patient. Legs will be a pain but ill get there. And im going to enjoy playing the machine for a few weeks before i strip it for the respray stripping it back will suck as im sure it will be lead based paint. *!@

This was an email back from Clay regarding either to varnish or stain the timber:
Neither. The original finish used on side rails was lacquer.
If you want to do a nice woodrail finish, i recommend this.
1. sand rails. do not go nuts and try and make them look
perfect. you're missing the point if you do. go 100, 150, 220,400.
2. stain rails. the original finish was nitrocellulose
lacquer. it yellows something fierce, which anyone in
the finish biz would think as "bad". hence the change to
acyrlic lacquer in the 1960s. but you need to get that "look".
I use ainline alcohol dyes. Yellow with a touch of red and brown.
apply with a rag to the rails. Dries in minutes.
3. Spray with Krylon Crystal Clear or Triple Thick. Both are
basically acrylic lacquer. Don't put too much on! If using
TT, it needs only 1 or 2 coats compared to 3 coats with CC.
4. optional: let dry, then lightly sand with 1000 grit.
Take a rag and some Novus2 and polish.
Hope this helps.
As with the metal lockdown and side rails ^.^ The ops did this around 1960/61 once all the woodrail games were now being made as steel rail games.....bastards! Anyways PBR has single player rails available - they are US$32 each (from memory) but they don't make the multiplayer rails that were wider.
Also Daniel - did you know that the rails had cigarette holders on the rails? PBR sells reproduction of these also:

The bodies are around the same weight, the heads (especially the 4 players) are real heavy but no different to a 4 player Gottlieb/Williams/Bally EM head from the 1970s.
Game is coming along real nicely Daniel....still if it was my game would think twice about respraying it.

Well the legs arrived today and im very happy with them. They wont be going onto the game until the cabinet is resprayed incase they never come off. Just a little incentive for me to pull my finger out i guess

All pinballs used timber for legs until mid 1958.
The game Daniel is rebuilding - the legs sit at a slight angle (around 15 degrees) and the pin will sit a bit higher than post 1980 games.
All single player games that used timber for the legs were straight like the legs on todays pinballs, it was only a few Gottlieb and Williams 1950s games that used legs like this that were on an angle

Well the sheds almost done and the marathon respray is priority one so i can get the old girl back on its legs.
Ive decided with the respray ill be using similar colors on the cabinet that are on the playfield and want some opinions Yes No??? !@#?
And the legs lockbar and Rails will all be varnished and left wood color not painted Red like the moron in the picture %.%

BUGGER CRAP POO ^.^ I was all fired up to strip down the cabinet for the respray while we have this beautiful weather the plan was to leave it on the trolley and wheel it in and out as i work on it but it wont fit out the roller door with all the jukeboxes and pinballs in the way so ill have to re arrange the shed before i can start GRRRRRRRR

Well i said i was going to wait till the Simpsons was gone but i ran out of patience so i started to strip Marathon ready to respray the cabinet hopefully start the actual paint removal on sunday as the wife will be at work from 4am til 8.30pm. If only i could get her to take up a 3rd job i could retire and do up pinnies full time !*!

Well what was a complete working pinball is now an empty shell.
I was a little nervous pulling apart a 50 year old wooden box wasnt sure what was going to happen......
Everything came off without to much damage i even managed to get the wooden rails off in one piece (Well Mostly)

Well ive stripped the first layer off the front Door and found the original Art so im going to trace that. And see if i can find whats left on the rest of the cabinet so i can atleast get a starting point. I think im going to paint the cabinet the similar colors to the playfield as they look to be similar.
What do you think Tony? Might the colors have been bright like the playfield?????

She is your game so you can paint it what ever colour you want.
Would try to keep the original colours and design though....just take your time!
Respraying a cabinet is a huge job and will take weeks and weeks!

I want to stay as original as possible but the photo you showed before is the only photo i can find so i really have no idea what original is the morons painted the woodrails red so who know what else they painted with there crayons lol. Lets hope i can find some good original unfaded Artwork ^^^

Yeah mate the wife cracked the sads and told me to get out to the shed she doesnt want to see me all day. (Im not sure if thats here form of punishment but a guilt trip only works if you have a consience !*!) So ive been stripping away.
Im going to be spraying with acrylic the under coat and the base white the rest i will probably roll on with the stencil but i might spray the whole lot yet !@#

Well the art has been traced and the cabinet fully stripped im tracing the backbox art at the moment and should have it fully stripped in the next hour

Well im happy to report the cabinet has been stripped of non original paint.
Tracings made then completely stripped $#$.
I was very luck when i stripped the headbox the first side i did showed no sign of original paint ^&^ But luckily on the other side i found some of the art $#$

Had to make a few repairs to the cabinet as most of the joins were either split or about to. So i gently opened the joins and pumped in some woodglue then clamped and nailed it backtogether was looking like a terrible job but once i started squeezing it all pulled back into shape phewwwwww

Now im at a standstill till the glue dries.... I might start filling a few of the dings and holes and get ready for primer $#$

Very basic for the tracing JD just A3 tracing paper sticky taped together and a grey lead pencil ^^^

Not much to report tonight grabbed my tin of primer down and only had a dribble left in the bottom GRRRR oh well was enough to get one coat on and give me an idea what i was up against and reminded me my spray gun needed a good clean so i spent the arvo doing that. Bring on tomorrow Paint shop after work then look out

The last 3 resprays I have done - just 2 coats of primer - first one light and the second a bit heavier

Well i got the cabinet as good as i thought possible without completely bogging the sides up and gave it its first base coat i got excited and forgot to take photos in primer %.%

Well ive got the white section painted but ive had to walk away ^.^ Masked up the patern on the front of the cabinet and given it a light coat of paint and the bloody shit masking tape is bubbling and peeling so if i have to remask for the second coat im going to be majorly pissed off ^.^ ^.^ ^.^ ^.^ ^.^ ^.^ ^.^

Well this is where im leaving it for the night managed to get the annoying little trinagle bits done so im very happy.
Ive also got the stencils cut out for the annoying circles lets just hope they work ok

I didnt get much done today had one visitor after another i did get a few bits polished up but sadly i forgot to take a before shot of them

I also have a question for anyone who might know.
With the coin door stripped im unsure if the base color should be white or yellow. Im in two minds i think it should be white with the blue as white is the only color missing from the front of the cabinet?????

Well its been a long journey but i think im at the end well for a while atleast what started out as an ebay project has been turned into another beauty if i do say so myself. The wood rails are the originals that ive sanded and varnished but are not atached as i would like to still get some new ones made so until this happens Marathon is finished just need to bolt the legs on and squeeze it into the line up $#$

I'm pretty sure old head bolts from EMs and SS pins will do the trick for the legs....doubt you will be able to buy them here

They are different again, they have rounded heads on them....the actual bolts will be really tough to find

$#$ @@* #*# Well im very happy after a visit to the bolt shop to find they have nothing similar i decided to add 2 washers instead of one to give me the tension i was missing to use new pinball leg bolts. Was a little nervous after bolting the legs on didnt know if the 50 year old legs were going to break and destroy all my hard work. Luckily the held together..

Well i finally bought some side rail nails but they are too long and will go straight through the cabinet will have to hit the hardware and see what else i can use.

I've finally got some stainless steel cut for inside the cabinet above the playfield originally had rusty old tin. Since ive clamped and glued the cabinet tight again there won't be any room for the nail. Was thinking about gluing them in place. Any suggestions???

These old machines look fantastic when they've been restored to this level.
I love the art on them, everything from the backglass to the playfield and the cabinet art.
I'd love to have a machine like this in my collection (if I had the space).

Silicone would hold the stainless in position you would just have to clean the stainless well and clamp it in position over night to ensure a good bond
