Twilight Zone
« on: January 10, 2012, 09:40:05 PM »
Been doing a bit of reaserch on Twilight Zone and all sounds very good. Cant remeber ever playing one. Would appreciate any thoughts from owners or anyone who knows the game.
Also what are they worth the one I have seen they are asking $6000 looks to be in excellent condition.
Thanks...Tim

Seems to be lots of TZ for sale lately and they don't appear to be in as high demand as they were 12 - 24 months ago. Watched a few on ebay
priced at around the $6K mark and they were listed many times over. I'm thinking around the $5K mark for a nice one. Gameworx has one listed
at $3700, unsure of the condition. Personally i've never liked TZ at all.

Had a TZ for years & will never sell it.

It's an amazing game, but can be brutally unforgiving at times !!!
When you crank it out - it goes ballistic. Really  :D
Takes a good while to sus the ruleset, it's very complex. However IMO this makes for an excellent home pin 'cos it never gets boring.
@ $5-6 K I reckon it's worth every penny - but I'm seriously biased.

My advice: don't hesitate or the Kanamits might getya.

As good a game as it is, and with a theme that should appeal to me down to a tee, I did not enjoy my TZ when I had it, and sold it after a few months. It is packed with more goodies than just about any other game, but the shot map and ball behaviour was not to my liking (I generally prefer more open playfields, long shots, and not too much stop and go). This is one really worth a bit of play time before deciding if the style of play, which is quite unique IMO, works for you.

MartyJ had one for sale that was far superior to any others I've seen on a showroom floor. There are plenty around, but not as good as this one.

Twilight Zone is like a Batman Forever, or a Indianna Jones Widebody etc, it is a stop start type of game, but it has a very deep rule set. If you like fast long shot games, its maybe not ya cup of tea, but if u like a pin you can never beat that always fights back and gives u a feeling of a machine that is very interesting/weird/challenging and unusually unpredictable, you will like a Twilight Zone.

I find a Indy Jones widebody and a Twilight Zone are machines that u best enjoy if u want a long enjoyable detailed game that you dont mind relaxing with for a bit of a extended game. If you want a quick game that doesnt score high, u can still give it a bash, but the longer more concentrated game suits this pinball much better.

Twilight Zone is a definate game to own if u like something very unique. Pricing between $5 grand and $6 grand tops in excellent fully reco/restored condition with excellent cabinet art. Game needs to be fully redecalled to show off the machine in all its glory. A fun game to add the toys/mods too as well. ^^^

There is a reason it is constantly rated number 1, it is a great game, from a time when Williams had big budgets to spend on game development, some real innovations, lots of magnets, and a great wizard mode. Intergration to the theme would have to be one of the best ever. TZ is a game I will never sell

I think one of the best things out there for trying out games is Visual Pinball.
Back when I was using it, it took just a bit of fiddling and reading to figure out how to make it work right, but as long as you're familiar with cut & pasting files in specific locations on Windows Explorer it's cake. Nowadays I would imagine that they've got an easy-to-install download that gets it all set up for you or is at least a bit more simpler, but really it wasn't that bad even a few years ago. I guess what I'm saying is that it wasn't just install the thing and it was ready to go. At any rate, there are installation instructions that are easy to follow on the site:
http://www.vpforums.org/

You have to download individual games and on most of them there are multiple versions to choose from. Personally I enjoyed trying out the many versions.

Besides being fun to play on its own and being free as well, it's really a great way to play games and learn the rules, shots and general play of most any pinball in existence.
The physics and graphics are usually being improved over time and I'll bet it's even better than it was the last time I tried it.
I'd go there and give it a shot. You'll be able to play several different versions of Twilight Zone at your leisure, for free and from the comfort of your desk at home and see if you'll like the game. Then try a bunch of other games too and use it to help decide what you want in your collection.

For the record, I had a TZ in mu collection for a couple years. I think it was an excellent game and probably would still have it now if I didn't sell off my collection to pay bills a few years ago. It was a project so I got it for $1600 and probably had $2k into it by the time I had it working. Sold it off with a bunch of stuff I acquired to really spiff it up but never got around to it for basically what I had into it, not including labor, and it was around $2500 (USD). Deals can be found especially if you don't mind working on a project.
I feel more like I do now than I did when I first got here.

A very deep game but too stop start for me and lacks real flow and speed to keep me entertained, although the powerball is cool. Over-rated and until recently over-priced but then again I have never been a big fan of Lawlor pins.
TZ has dropped in price quite a bit in the last year or so as have most titles, you can pick up a good one for 4k-4.5k these days no dramas at all.
If you haven't played one....... play one first to gauge your own experience and avoid visiual pinball imo as it gives no real indication of how a real machine will play.

I have not seen the one at gameworx either but the last one they had sold for 3.3k....aus delivered with wear free playfield and slightly faded cab so this one should be pretty nice too and sounds like a bargain if you are after one and might be worth checking out.

Daz,
the visual pinball thing Vinito mentioned is at least worth a try, just to give some indication on sounds and playfield layout if a real game isnt available to touch.

I had a TZ for 6 years and only just recently sold it. Took me about 3 months to grow on me and then became my favorite. I never found it to be too stop & go like others do. I initially found it to be not open enough but once you understand the rules and then strategies you'll find out why it's rated number 1 and has been for a long time

It has some neat toys, especially the power field (which never gets old and cannot be mastered) & the powerball but what I like most is the ruleset and how the shot layout is done. little things like how the left ramp feeds the left flipper but lights the piano shot which is shootable from the top left flipper but to feed the upper left flipper you shoot the right ramp (from the left flipper) so it has forced you into a combination which is satisfying when done but there is more as the right ramp shot also temporarily lights the slot shot which is also shootable from left flipper.. So you have a decision to make on what to go for. Sounds confusing but this type of thought in the shot layout/ ruleset makes it great

Deep great game for sure and you need to play it a lot before you'll appreciate it. I think this is why a lot of people don't like it as they haven't played it enough and therefore don't "get it"

Also every shot you make then lights something else, so there is always something to shoot for and strategy in how you play
