Title: Any punters out there? Whats your tip for the cup
Post by: Cow Corner on October 28, 2011, 08:55:59 AM
Any fellow punters out there?
Spring carnival is in full swing and it's not long now til the cup.
Will you be having a little or a large flutter?
What is your tip for the cup?
For the record I like Green Moon if it gets a start.

I'd expect that sort of reply from you Mike...bah humbug..... (((
Life is a gamble and far too short as it is....you can't take it with you so you might as well have a little fun every now and then while you can.
Big group one races like the melb cup are not rigged...far too muh money at stake and with all those runners you would have to get everyone on board to make the sting work. Nigh on impossible.
Unlke say spot betting in cricket where almost eveyone is in on it including australian players becuase it is very easy to hide on a wide or a no ball or a wicket...etc.
Anyone having a bet on tuesday want to chime in with something a little less lame?

I always go for the horse that no-one knows much about, and so someone wins a shit load of money at outside odds of 65 to 1 or something crazy.  :D

Also, most cup winners are usually male horses so a female horse would be a good winner for a change.  ^^^

The melbourne cup is probably the only horse race of the year that isnt rigged cause millions of people are watching like Mike said.  *)* *)*

I reckon put a horse on Gay Waterhouses back, and make her run a few miles with some happy horse flogging her 3 hundred times with a whip. I hope in her next life she comes back as a horse that is made to jump metal poles and all that hoo haa for the richy's. Karma is a great thing. Poor friggin horse.

I lost interest in this years ago when (or before) all the foreign horses started running in it.

Also agree with Mike .. horse racing is rigged

Best time of year for a punt, group 1 racing is not rigged, too much at stake, every runner in the MC will be trying to win, it's the hardest race to pick the winner though, I really liked how american kicked the other day so I will back it for the cup, although history is against it winning again.
Cheers
Dave

O well, Green Moon is out of contention, needed a win today to secure a berth in the big one.
Looks like it's back to the form guide.
It was great to see both atlantic jewel and sepoy get up today, along with black caviar they are some of the finest sprinters going around.
The odds were short but well worth a all up ^^^
It seems most pinheads are non punters, that suprises me with the amount of cash we splash around on pins and games.
It is predicted that this yrs spring carnival will generate more than $500 million into the economy.
With manufacturing and retail so shite atm we need a strong racing industry more now than ever.
Back to the form guide.

How does it generate 500 million INTO the country?

Its possible that 500 mil will be gambled etc,

500 mil in lost production time possibly?

500 mil internal money spent on hats, high heels, expensive pies at the track - possibly

500 mil INTO the country i doubt very very much

Im not a horse racing fan as you might gather... i personally find the excuse to take the afternoon off and go get pissed like a tit bloody ridiculous

Think ill join Mike down the pub..

... bugger that - racing is on!

Looks like gambling on horses is very popular with the pinball community, NOT. lol

The only way to TRY and make a dollar if you are to gamble is on RED or Black on the roulette wheel at the casino. Mathematically, it has the best odds of any game in any casino in the world. Statistically, it is 49 to 51 percent in the house's favour. Its not a 50/50 because the number 0, which isnt red or black, gives the house a win.

But put a $100 down, and double your money, or lose the $100 is the best odds of any legal gambling game in the world. I once took 3 months off work, professionally gambled for 3 months, playing red or black, and averaged a few grand a week in winnings over a 12 week period. Bought a jet-ski, and never bothered going back.

The best gamble, is buy a pinball machine cheap, do it up, play it for 6 or 12 months, then flog it and get ya money back plus $500 and start again.lol  %.% %.% ^^^

** Forgot to add, the government probably makes $500 million in taxes on melb cup day. They win no matter what happens.

Well done Daz. Missed the race yet again. Stratana's 2nd race in the big city. Lead the way two weeks ago @ Randwick, though failed to finish 1st.

So for the big one - Melbourne Cup...who's got a tip for me?? Bloody hard race to pick!!
Last time I tipped a winner in this race was way back in 1990 - visited Flemington as a kid and saw Kingston Rule cross the line. That horse still holds the record for fastest time - great memory.

I have a mate who is a most accomplished part-time gambler, makes thousands every year with carefully thought out systems and information. In the 25 years I have known him, he has never come out behind in any particular year. Loves his horse racing, is in a syndicate or two as well.

Acted for him when he bought his first house - he was 25 or so. I asked him who his bank was for his mortgage and he looked at me like he had no idea what I meant (and he didn't) - "What's a mortgage?" I explained and he told me he had saved up the money. When he bought his next one a couple of years later I didn't bother asking, and yes, still no mortgage.

Took me to the pokies once about 20 years ago I think, he'd uncovered a horse racing machine that the programmer had actually made 10-1 horses come in once in ten (over a sufficient period that is). Having had a long time fascination with the laws of probability, I was interested and understood how this could work if the odds were truly reflective of the programming. He had been keeping a book of each session. In six months he'd averaged four sessions a week, and left with $200.00 on average every time (remember, this was 20 years ago) except once where he'd lost a few dollars and didn't have time to keep going. Explained about never laying a bet unless it recouped every dollar lost and made a profit, otherwise you are simply giving money away. Made sense. We played his machine, doubling up the bets after the first ten without a winner, doubling again if another ten passed, and sure enough the laws of probability provided a string of winners at some point, and a neat payout. Went back a few days later on my own, was down almost half a weeks wages and a bit worried, and then got a collect that put me back in the black and that was the last time I placed anything in one of those things, and kind of ironic that I developed a dislike for them and gambling per se that pokies would in part later be the killer of Williams pinball.

So my tip for the cup - if you are in Melbourne, have a great day off!!

Yep pokies suck the big one, so very anti social.
Races are great fun regardless of if you bet or not, a fantastic day out with your mates and a awesome place for singles to hook up.
I don't gamble to become rich, I do it for fun..if I have a win thats great and if I have a loss it's not the end of the world as I never gamble beyond my means.
I like the story about the 3 months of pro gambling...lol....yeah Id stop too if I had a system that won all the time, it wouldn't be fair to anyone else...lol....I got a good giggle out of that.

Atlantic Jewel has been scratched from the Oaks on Thurdsay.
Bummer, I was really looking forward to watching her run again, a quality sprinter indeed.

Daz, I wanted to clarify something about the previous comment I made about when i went gambling for a 3 month period, so u can put my previous comments into perspective. I was serious, my comments werent made for a laugh. lol

I actually met an American maths pofessor who was a professional gambler. He only played one game and travelled the world gambling. It was Roulette/red or black like I said.

Anyone can bet on red or black, its a no brainer. But knowing what u shld bet, depends on what stake you start with. If u have 2 grand to play with, you bet $100 a time, if u have $1200 or less, u bet $50 only. It matters alot based on probability of how many times u can afford to lose say 6 or 7 times in a row, and if u do win, how many times u can double up before you reach the house betting limit etc. There are a few mathematical rules u need to stick to, to give yourself a fighting chance. This maths professor and gambling expert explained some key rules. He also taught me how the house spins the ball anti-clockwise, or clockwise depending on how a person bets. Again, another important item that the average Joe wouldnt know, unless a expert pointed it out. The list goes on, including they change dealers more often if u are winning etc, as well as use different weighted balls the more u win etc. Even on a game as basic as red or black, there are many hidden parts to the story.

I gambled for a 3 month period, 7 days a week, 12 hrs a day because it was a break from being in the security industry/the same thing I have done for almost 20 yrs. Most days i would win $300 or $400, giving me a average winning for the week of a few grand. In most gambling circles, $300 a day in profit was peanuts for a 12 hr day, and a few grand a week still peanuts. I make alot more than that in my security business, which is why after 3 months I went back to running my fulltime business, and stopped my holiday of gambling which was a hobby/interest to have a sea change from Security. I also note that I would gamble from 8pm of a night til sun up the next morning. You never see the family. 3 months was well enough of that.

Sometimes theres more to the story than meets the eye.  %$%

My business partner put $20.00 each way on two horses for me, apparently one came third and I get my money back.

Apparently she doesn't get it that if it had stayed in my wallet in the first place I wouldn't need to be told I was getting it back (or that she had robbed m earlier in the day!).

Very confusing this betting stuff!!

I'll second that.

The guys at work had the TV coverage on all day  (((, couldn't really see how it could be captivating for that long.

As per usual I didn't win a thing - but then again I didn't lose anything either.  I s'pose that happens when you don't bet on them. Maybe I'm just a too much of a 'nanna' to take a risk %.%
