Does this sound suspect?
« on: March 26, 2009, 11:06:04 PM »
Hey guys, got a response from a WTB ad and apart from the price being a bit steep for a FM Apron I find it strange why a Yank would want British Pounds payment. What do you think, does it smell fishy?? The following is the email he sent me.

Thanks for the mail.I have RFM parts you are looking for.I would be asking a 150GBP for the requested parts including postage.I can ship via Ups or FedEx which ever you prefer.I would accept payment via Western union or Money gram.Whats your complete shipping address including postage code?

Thanks,

Keith.

Sounds like he had a bit of a surf and found someone in the UK selling it for say 100 pounds and he pockets the rest  !@#. Why else would a yank want payment in quid?

Hmm, he's a yank and he is confused. Thinks Australia is in England and decided to make payment easy for you.

Also the Western Union/Money Gram payment.... !@#

Ebay refuse to deal with them, must be a reason..

Why couldn't he do Paypal or Bank Deposit?

If you don't want that money I'll have it - at least you know I scammed it out of you and it'll go to a useful purpose.

A) he thinks Oz dollars are 'pounds' ???

B) he gets a better transfer rate from pounds-to-us$ instead of Oz$-to-us$ ???

It's a scam - I get them all the time off my ads from the same place.

I usually like to egg them on and ask for more info to get them going  && then reply back in a nasty fashion  *%*

I agree with Tony, definetely a scam and more than likely a Nigerian. Ask for a photo of it, you might be surprised with what he is actually offering you!

I see these scams on a daily basis.  Generally its people selling a car, caravan or motorbike in a hurry as they've moved to England (send photos from google or the trading post of other peoples ads)...

Ask the seller, to take a photograph, with a peice of paper on top of it with your name and date - or anything, just to prove its legit...

You'll get some crap that the parts are not near them at the moment, or its in storage...blah blah...They might even supply you with a mobile, which will work and you can talk to them but still a scam...

Any other time if buying from a person direct, avoid Western Union / Money Grams....There are teams of mules working in the UK, laundering the funds then off to Nigeria.

Its a shame they're moving into the pinball scene.... !*!

asked for a photo but alas, he doesn't have any on his PC but they are in GOOD condition. I'll play with this guy a bit more for some fun. Will let you know if anything interesting happens.

Just out of interest, have a look at the originating I.P in the email he sent.....Do a SamSpade.org on it and see what country it comes up too.... :tumble:  Nigeria????

Otherwise do a quick google on the I.P....Generally these scammers published fairly quickly..
