Title: Williams Terminator 2 Restoration

This game has been in the Restoration queue for a LONG TIME. I did start it a while ago, and it is slowly coming together. There are a few games that I need to document that I need to catch up on, and this is the first. The game was an import and needs a fair bit of work to be presentable. This has been earmarked to use the "Pinball Protectors" - which arrived a while ago.

Objective

This machine needs new cab art. The factory decals are scratched, missing or peeled. A previous owner tried using it to mix paints at some point ! This will be more a restoration as the cabinet needs a lot of work. As mentioned, the playfield will have the Playfield Protector installed.

Condition report

Cabinet - 4/10 - Not presentable. Scratches and mixed colours all over the place. Holes in the front panel. Needs work and will have new decals installed.
Playfield - 8/10 - VERY solid. Has some wear that will be an easy fix in the CPU insert area. Fillthy playfield. Will clean up well. Broken plastics and other items that will be addressed.
Electronics - 8/10 - One of the better Terminator 2 board set. No major hacks.

Watching with interest Nino,
My T2 restoration has started!

Will you be doing playfield repairs before adding the protector. If so, very keen on seeing the process and products you use. My playfield has repairs need around the CPU and bumpers.

Basic cosmetic repairs - yes. The CPU area will be repainted and built up to be level.

I love this Terminator 2 machine. One of the BEST ever translites in pinball history.

One with a set of brand new cabinet decals added is just spectacular.

The decision had been made to have the playfield clearcoated. It was not part of the original plan, but it worth worth investigating. This was to be the first APR / Platinum Pinball playfield project, so we were keen to get this moving along.

Pictures don't do it justice. It is so hard to get the right amount of light without creating the "wave effect" from the light passing through the roof.

Back in the saddle again.  ^^^

Here are sold photos of the AWESOME cabinet repaint and redecal that Timbo and Stu did for me last year. These are old shots that I only now realized I had not posted. The cabinet is completed, and I'll post up photos of that shorty.

But for this update, I have recommenced the playfield re assembly. All the parts have been cleaned, polished and worn / broken parts are identified and replaced. I used to tumble the old springs, but now I simply replace them.

Lamp boards cleaned, pins resoldered and then refitted. I use wire leads for the pop bumper sockets and then solder them into the wiring harness.

Around the pop bumpers I install adhesive mylar rings. All new parts for the rebuild. Guard rails are all regrained. Posts are simply tumbed and re installed.

The underside is almost done - this game was missing the entire single Drop target Assembly. The assembly is in two parts - the DT and the reset assembly. Both are sourced and re fitted. At the time I started the restoration, the mounting plate for the reset assy was unavailable and the bracket assembly was difficult to locate. Now the entire DT assy is available as an assembled unit.

The metal ramps and been returned from the Plater. They were chrome plated. These will look amazing !

The apron and head brackets will be powdercoated. Waiting on new spot targets to finish the playfield off and the front door will be finished as original.

Can do if there's enough interest. The problem is that the plate for the reset coil (small coil) is hard to stock due to availability.

Most of the parts for this restoration have arrived. Hold up is some of the plastics that need replacement.

The flippers need to be rebuilt with new parts. In this case, the flipper coild had non factory wrappers and didn't measure correct. For more easier to replace the coils along with the flipper kits. Baseplate is cleaned and polished. It is these (time consuming) minor details that make the difference.

You do fantastic work. A couple of times in your restoration you mentioned "tumbling". Can you tell me what that is please.

"Tumbling" is the process of using a vibratory tumbler to polish metal pinball parts. You can buy a tumbler from a gun shop. you need tumbling media - untreated corn cob - and also a cleaning solution - Turtle Wax that you can buy at bunnings.

You wash the parts, dry them, then place them in the tumbler with the media and cleaner. come back in 4 hours, and the parts will appear completely polished.

I have polish screws etc - they are OK to polish in a tumbler, but I like them to look better then new.

As mentioned in it's own thread, I lost all my photos of restoration work on current machines I've been working on, so there is a gap between where I was prior to the disk failure, and where I'm up to now. So I'll try to continue this thread with recent photos.

The left metal ramp had a rusty old flap, so the flap is removed and I will repaint and refit the flap.

Some projects take longer than others and sometimes things have a way of taking time - too long ! Here's a snippet of plastics I wanted to use - I ended up replacing a few - but the ONLY supplier didn't have all the plastics available at one time. so I ordered the LHS and some upper plastics and had them in my cart waiting for the RHS to be released. Received the email that they are in stock, but the LHS plastics were removed from my cart.. While exchanging emails the upper plastics (around the skull), sold out. Unimpressed, I requested that I will pay for what is in stock, and WAIT for the ones I missed to be remade.

Does not sound like too much of a drama. Only took THREE MONTHS until everything was available !

But, they were worth waiting for - here's a snippet !

As mentioned earlier, I lost my hard disk with most of the re assembly, so I'm posting photos from more recent progress.

The game is fully assembled and is being tested and checked for issues. The mods on this game were particularly a problem as they use cheap wire and the electrical work is poor. But the aesthetics are VERY cool. I rewired and had the lengthen most of the mods to fit. I've used Cointaker or Ablaze Super Brights throughout. There are some standard LEDs, particularly the GI areas. I also installed the RED playfield protector set, which looks incredible on the game. It gives the plastics a deeper look, and provides the red border which matches the playfield. I LOVE them !

The LEDs behind the translite are all superbright #555. The warm whites give the central picture of Arnie a more "human" look than the cool whites that are behind the machines. Red behind the title and eyes of the Terminators.

Wow stunning work Nino, the finished game looks sensational! I have to say I enjoy seeing the finished photos of the underside of the playfield and inside cabinet as much as the finished game. It really shows where much of the hard work goes and the level of detail in the finishes.

Yes it’s all set up now in its temporary home while I make some room at home,
Anyway thanks again for the Awesome T2 & amazing workmanship & killer light show,
In the end it all panned out well, All the best Nino with APR/RTBB,
you have tons of resto work infont of you & can’t wait to check out your next finished machine
