Title: Backglass Repair/Touchup
Post by: millsy on May 09, 2009, 12:42:29 AM
I would like to do a minor repair to my backglass without wrecking it as I know they are near impossible to get & are very delicate - I would like to repair around the score wheels -being white I thought i may be capable of doing this without damaging it. Would appreciate some tips or links on how I can acheive this.

Isn't there a repro glass available for this game?.

Pricey i know. Just depends on how far you wanna take the game, and what you consider to be over capitalising.

Aussie $ is starting to improve, so that's a good thing.

Here's something radical, inspired by Mitch  *%*

Scrape out all the white, and create a mask out of low tack paper and spray the white area and then seal.

How do you do it so the light can still shine through though?.

Light will be able to shine through the white areas - from memory, the globes are mounted above the score reels, facing down, not out - so it may work !

Yep,

They are available from Shay at US$295 each + shipping which is US$195....makes it pretty expensive but IMO they look sweet and well worth the outlay. I have bought 5 from them and looking at buying 2 more  *%*

Yeah, I like Jumping Jack. I reckon it's a good looking game and plays great too. So for me personally, i'd cough up the dough for a glass and turn it into a keeper.

Would love to buy a repo backglass, maybe when the exchange rate is a little better & I have a little more pinball $ funds - in the mean time I might try this method  http://www.thecopiercompany.com.au/product.asp?ID=3147, Having done the apron & Front cab & quite happy with the result. At least I can peel the glass transfer off if i am not happy with the result, This brings me to my next question - according to link at pinrepair(thanks ZEDX) it is most important to clear coat the BG before you do anything - everyone seems to use Krylon triple thick,is this available in Aust? Can I use an equivalent preferably White Knight clear coat from Bunnings(I get staff discount) -this seemed to work ok on my decals/transfers but am worried to try on the backglass.
Daniel, have you still got that JJ backglass out of the backbox, reason it looks like I have 2 missing brackets at top of BBox that holds the glass in place -if so could you measure them & I will make some up.

Yepp that would work i reckon. the light would still shine through pretty good, just make sure to get an even coverage of paint. i usually use a white primer type paint in a pressure pack, usually acrylic.

another trick you could try, that i've used and had success with is to cut a sticker (decal) out of white A4 adhesive label and stick that behind the glass. i did that on both my MIBS and KLONDIKE glasses and it worked great!

Hope this info is helpful..

Cheers...Mitch

Hey Kev
Ill pull it down for you and take a look at the brackets if they are the originals ill send em to you i can use anything to hold the glass in but after the work you have done on yours you deserve the originals.

Also my method of touch up is no good with the lights behind it, looks good unlit but is patchy with lights.  (Couldnt get a photo that looked crap to post)

Ive used a Clear coat from bunnings (Cant remember the name) without an issue but never on a backglass thats in a machine.   Im happy to get one of my rough ones and sit it infront of the heater for a few hours then take it into the cold to see what happens?   !*!  If it all turns to crap yo know what ill do to it lol   !*!

Looking forward to that Tony.
Been to Spotlight -no luck but they did have maybe similiar - Helmar Crystal Kote -says it is for drawings, artwork (I reckon backglasses are rare artwork),prints, photographs, documents.I dont think this will do any damage, will bite the bullet and try it. Will report on outcome.

I've used Helmar Crystal Kote due to lack of triple thick. OK so far possibly not as thick as the krylon but I put three coats on.
