Hi all.
Started some restore work on my first pin, this may take a few years to complete. %.%

Wow dave great work how did you get it to look like thta?
-
Hi Daniel,
I soaked in Rust Remover as well as scubbed with scourer, then wet/dry sandpaper with penetrene, then polish by hand. I took off most of what was left of the plating on coin slot, so am concerned about rust coming back quickly. Cabinet was scrubbed with alchohol and magic eraser, lost a bit of paint to get rid of yellowing.
Cheers

Looks good if your worried about the rust coming back give it a coat af Gloss clear should keep it looking the way it does
-
Yeah, been thinking along those lines. If I clear coat, it will retain a rustic look on close inspection which will be ok if I keep cabinet original, or do I re-chrome and re-paint cabinet? will post more pics of how cabinet looks after some cleaning.
-
What fantastic results!
Actually amazing results!
That is something I just don't have the same success with - Dave how long did you soak the rust for?
-
Id keep going the way you are dave its looking great as a respray is a massive jop

Headbox side without cleaning:

Side I cleaned with alchohol and eraser

Hi I-S
I guess I would have soaked for up to 3-4 hours, put a bit of work in with the wet/dry, time will tell if this will last long, but at the end of the day if the chrome has rusted, your back to bare metal.
Cheers

Im stunned how well you are getting the yellow off ive tried that once lets just say i wont be trying it again anytime soon ^&^
-
Lots of elbow grease to get it off, I have only done front and one side so far, lose some paint in process and uncover previous repairs %.%
This is the one side I have cleaned

Love your work Dave.
Did you use Ranex as the "rust remover" ?
-
Hi Strangeways,
No, I used "Septone" brand from SuperCheap.

Regarding the drop targets, I am missing a couple of rubber grommits that sit behind the targets, also found a couple of plastic bushes broken on the main reset rod, are these parts available anywhere, or do I have to find an alternative solution?

Awesome stuff DD, I especially love the way the cab art has come up.

The coil sleeves will need to be replaced and the guys like Mark C and other sponsers will have them available. While you are at it buy new sleeves for the flippers and all pop bumpers.
If you intend to order more parts such as new bumper bodies, skirts, caps, targets, rollover guides, flipper bushings etc buy them all in one hit from PBR
-
Hi I-S
Replaced sleeves, picked them up locally from Austral. Waiting on order from PBR, getting flipper re-build kit with new flippers and switches, coils, leg levellers and bolts, lane guides, shooter spring, rubbers, #47 globes, locks, coin inserts and schematic dwg. ^^^
I will have a second order down the track and get new bop bumper bodies and caps, posts, plastic set and anything else I have forgotten.
I cannot see the rubber grommits for drop targets or the nylon bushes on PBR website, might have to ask PBR.
Cheers

one of the best looking playfields on a quick draw I have seen, most I have seen have planking..thats a great looking game mate you have done really well,a keeper for sure!!! @@*

I hoped to take some pics of removing the mylar but my camera went flat and could not find the bloody charger!!
I did this work about a week ago, turned the house upside down today and finally found the charger, so was able to take these pics.
Still got to finish cleaning the cabinet, seal the backglass, polish legs and replace playfield glass. This will do for time being until I get another machine, this playfield still needs holes and artwork restored, but is a lot nicer to look at now.
Thanks for all the encouragement.
Cheers

Here's another before/after

There is a small wear spot from where the ball lands from the left eject hole, will the wax protect this in the short term or should I be putting something down to protect against further wear? !@#
I dont have any mylar, but have some clear contact, I could put a small piece down on the landing zone from each eject hole?
-
hell that looks good, now thats a good buy!!!..I have used just contact to protect from ball landings on a T2 and a GTB countdown ,it's soft and dings from the ball but EZ to remove and replace and would do more than polish. You can always try and if the looks don't please you just remove knowing there will be no damage lifting it.
-
Cheers big dog,
Will stick some contact on for now.

Replaced the old instruction card, thanks to peter from Inkochnito for providing the files.
-
Wow that tilt unit looks unreal!!!
-
Damn Dave that tilt unit looks awsome what did you use to do that??????
-
Hi Daniel,
Soaked the main frame in rust convertor for a few hours, then a lot of elbow grease with brasso for all the parts, sanded the timber and rubbed some wood polish on.
Cheers
Dave
-
Looking good indeed!!! ^^^
-
What a fantastic transformation. Well done ^^^
I LOVE your attention to detail.
-
Small update,
Stripped and cleaned the left drop target unit, replaced the broken reset arm bushes with parts salvaged from unit ddtoys sent me, was wrapped with this as I was able to set up the reset coil/plunger to the "sweet spot" and got rid of the annoying coil vibration, I was unable to do this prior to new bushes, due to the slop in reset mech.
Cleaned and polished the Replay unit.
Rust treated and cleaned up the gal back cover on the head.
Replaced the dodgy decagon PCB on one of the score reels.
Replaced playfield glass.
No pics as the missus has taken the camera tonight. ^.^
If anyone wants the decagon pcb to repair for themselves, I'll post a pic and send it to them if they want it, I know bugger all about pcb repairs, its an $8 US part.
Cheers
Dave
-
Glad it came in handy Dave. Looking forward to photos especially of the Gal back cover some of mine look shit but never had the confidence to try clean then up ^^^
-
Hi Daniel,
Nothing flash about the gal cover, still looks average but got rid of the patchy surface rust and that white powdery stuff.
Cheers
Dave
-
Hey guys,
Just re-reading my post re the decagon pcb, I dont want anything for it, only mentioned the price to give a worth for time/cost to repair. @.@
Cheers
Dave
-
Dave,
How inspirational this thred is.....this is your first go at pinball rebuilding and restoration !@#
Amazing results and what's next? *)*
-
Hi Tony,
Ive got to source some triple thick to get backglass sealed, then I'll get backglass lamps working, finish cleaning yellow off the rest of cabinet and head. I will pull out the bottom board so I can give the score motor and all relays etc a good going over. Plays pretty smooth now, only other thing i'm considering is gluing some rubber to back of gal cover to hopefully quieten down the player unit.
I might leave it at that for now and look for another machine, I am saving for another at the moment and think its better to purchase another machine than pour money into the QD.
A good time to be picking up pinnies me thinks.
Cheers
Dave
