Title: RATE THIS PINBALL MACHINE ?
Post by: Caveoftreasures on January 16, 2010, 08:18:06 PM
OK, I do not own a Indianna Jones Pinball Machine yet.  I have played one only once or twice, for only a few minutes.

I feel that a good collection of pinball machines should/could include a Indianna, Addams and a Twilight ofcourse.
BUT so many people have mixed feelings about the playability of Indianna Jones. The machine looks excellent, great bright cabinet and backglass/translite.

DO U THINK INDIANNA JONES IS WORTH HAVING IN A COLLECTION ?
DO U THINK INDIANNA JONES IS A KEEPER BECAUSE IT IS A GREAT PLAYER AND KEEPS YOU INTERESTED ?
HAVE U HAD ONE AND SOLD IT, OR JUST KEPT IT ?

I AM INTERESTED IN YOUR OPINION GUYS, ESPESCIALLY FORM CURRENT INDIANNA JONES OWNERS.  ^^^  ^^^  ^^^

I like Indy and I will buy one one day. Used to love it when it was first released and I worked for an operator so I played it for nix which was even better. $#$

Oh no !
I anticipate a Rollerball IJ 'mode-hole' whinge ahead  *)*

Personally I owned one for about 4 years a while back and thought it was a very decent game.
Would I own one again - NO.
There are some way cooler games out there that I would save up for these days.

Still a decent game but.

I feel that a good collection of pinball machines should include a Indianna, Addams and a Twilight ofcourse.

Sadly I don't have a good collection by your criteria Caveman. I guess I should probably just get rid of the AFM, BBB, Firepower etc, oh and the BH, HH, Joker Poker.. .. ;) Lots of guys here have **great** collections that don't have any of those three.

Addams - fun game, would own if one came up that was nice and nicely priced (thought about the one Spamways had a little while's back) but not a "must have" - lots of fun though. TZ - well sold mine after six months having bought because so many people couldn't be wrong.. .. to me they were.

Now right on topic - had an Indianna for about a month. Played it heaps - in the first week. Didn't even bother with a farewell game the day I packed it up. Really reminds you of the movies with the theme, music and modes, but the recognisability of that music was also the downfall for mee - it got on my nerves after a while for some reason.

Moral of the story - play 'em and if you love 'em, buy 'em. One man's meat and all that.

Addams is simply an AWESOME machine, but I'd much rather see a CV, SS, MB, AFM, CFTBL or FT than and IJ or TZ. If I had a choice of three DMDs to have a "good collection" - It would be CV, SS and TAF.

IJ - Great theme for a pin but poorly designed. Looks good though, but it is a boring pin. So if I had one (part of a trade in is the only way I'd own one), I'd sell it ASAP to buy a better pin

Might just be ME (probably IS)  %.% But I IJ, TZ and ST TNG are very over rated pins and no one has even been able to tell me WHY they MUST BE part of a collection.

I'm off to play CFTBL  #@#

Hey Pinniesforme, the reason i said a good pinball collection should include an indy, addams and a twilight zone, is because they are so recognisable to many people. I didnt say that if u didnt have them your collection wasnt good. I probably should have used the word "could" instead of should.

A good pinball collection could include addams, indy and twilight zone.

What i really meant to convey, was that if u wanted to get someone into pinball, who had never played or seen these machines before, a addams, twilight zone and a indy themed pinball all sitting next to each other would give a newby to this hobby an instant brand recognition that would entice people to have a game, enjoy the music and features that the movies had etc etc.

u know what i mean anyway. any collection of pins is good, no matter whats in it or missing, so to speak.  ^^^  ^^^  ^^^

also, if u had the "so called" top 5 voted pins of all time (say for example addams, indy, twilight, ster trek next gen, and say a monsters bash etc) you could say to people who have never played one, this is a broad spectrum of machines that most pinball people believe are fun, and worth keeping, enjoy. Espescially, if u say are selling machines for a living, that would be a good collection to "help sell pinballs".

I mean, you wouldnt get rid of these titles and put a no good gofers and a few other b and c grade titles there to promote pinball. u know what i mean, hopefully !

I agree with Nino's post above.  In that price range there are better playing machines IMHO than the three listed as must haves.  I still dream of owning an A list title one day but at the moment I am happy to stick with my budget < $2500 machines that keep me entertained just as well as other A list machines.  Yeah they don't have the WOW factor when you walk in the door to seasoned pinheads but to guys that only see pinball machines and not an A or B list machine, they are just as good.

Some guys love STTNG and yeah it may attract people to the hobby but it can work the other way as well.  Personally if I played that machine as a noobie and thought that is what you get for about $3500-4500 then I think I would keep walking.

Moral to the story as has been mentioned, and luckily we are blessed with a wide variety of machines, is that everyone is different.

I would rate Gorgar as an A list machine though, irrespective of purchase price, it has that aura and reputation that makes it a well known and desirable machine.  Maybe instead of A list and B list I could say well known and lesser known machine/s.

IJ, STTNG, TZ all  :tumble:

No they are decent pins, but just dont represent value for playability. Look at the amount of guys who go nuts restoing these titles and flip them less than 12 months later. WHY? its because they realise these machines are not good players, and they can put the $$$ to better use.
Title: Re: RATE THIS PINBALL MACHINE ?
Post by: Strangeways on January 16, 2010, 10:34:38 PM

Might be slightly "off topic" and I hope I don't digress too much. I don't believe in the typical pinheads list of "A" and B" titles etc.. etc..

Medieval Madness is a classic example. If I saw an MM next to a Fishtales - and they were both 9/10 restored/reconditioned - I'd wait in line for a game on FT - even if no one was playing MM. Who decides which of these two games is an "A" list machine ? To me - which ever game "floats your boat" is the "A" list machine.

I enjoy FT, SS, CV, JY, Corvette, TAF and CFTBL

I fall asleep playing MM, ST TNG, IJ and TZ

No mention of DE Games - If I had a choice between IJ and Guns'N'Roses - I'd be jumping on a Gunners in a heartbeat. Buries IJ..

Gotta love pinball  ^^^

Ok, our post gets deeper. This is an interesting one !

Heres the 64 million dollar question then >

"if indianna, star trek next gen and twilight zone" are considered "not good players" by alot of members who have alot of experience with pinballs, (and you guys do know alot about pinball, i gotta give u that )

WHY did each of these titles sell between 12 and 15 thousand units. ? someone thought they were great machines. Operators must have been getting alot of coin from them all. And no-one puts coins in a machine alot, unless it is a good player !

so there is a catch 22 here. machines that dont play well, but get played lots. now i need a bourban to think about that one. lol

long live pinball.  ^^^  ^^^  ^^^

Title: Re: RATE THIS PINBALL MACHINE ?
Post by: Strangeways on January 16, 2010, 11:29:55 PM

It is all up to personal opinion. Those three titles could have sold 30,000 units each and made operators richer than Mr Trump.

I'll go back a step - back into my preferred era..

Eight Ball (1977) - 20,000 units sold. One of THE most requested titles. Not one drop target and it is a boring game.
KISS (1978) - 17,000 units sold. All time favorite band, yet the game is BORING. Coin box emptied every 2 days.
Mata Hari (1978) - 16,000 units sold. Nice looking game that resembles many GTB EMs (Spirit of 76..) - Not seen much these days (parted out) ?

Paragon (1979) - 9,000 units sold. BEST SS ever produced. Slowly becoming the most sought after SS of the era.

I'd rather own a Paragon than the other three.

It can safely be said that a vast majority of a nation of Germans were wrong during the war.

LOL

Yep IJ was a good seller as was TZ, but TZ i find irritating after going back to it and Indy i just dont like the artwork or the play - irritating again.

TAF - i love.

To be quite honest, i think a pin can have TOO much going on - i cant keep track of it all and actually get lost in a game... JD was the same when i had one of these - id get to a point and just could not work out where i was meant to shoot again unless the idea is to just keep going up left and right ramps.. id just reach a stalemate.

Apart from that - IJ is just TOO BROWN for me - i hate brown

IJ is a nice pin to play but way over priced. Bloody ugly too, especially when faded. I would much rather play a CFTBL or WCS 94. Now they are fun.

TZ bores me to tears. I couldn't wait to get rid of mine.

I have enjoyed playing IJ on site in the day, and also at meets.

Never owned one, so couldn't tell you about long term appeal.

For the record. TZ was actually a poor earning machine on site despite the number of machines sold.

It really hit it's own with the home market, due to the deep rule set.

It's really one of those games where you need to spend a shit load of time with it to get to know it.  Addams is awesome because the average punter can walk up and get stuck into it straight away.  Plus it's deep enough for the seasoned player.

Title: Re: RATE THIS PINBALL MACHINE ?

I think there may be a perception with some of these machines as well that people think - it has an asking price of $5000 therefore it must be a good machine as opposed to that Whitewater over there for $2000 which must be crap (it wasn't that long ago this is what WH2O machines were selling for).  Not always necessarily the case though.

These highly regarded machines have got the reputation and the hype around them, how they got it I'm not sure.  Personally I like the road you are on with your collection - a heap of machines that you don't see everyday, something different and not the stereotypical big name collection with bang for your buck.

I've had my Indy for about 12 months and really love it.  I have only been into this hobby for about 15 months so have not played heaps and heaps of titles.  I would say though that i rate my Jurassic Park almost as good as Indy.

What i like about Indy is i can just explain 1 part of the ruleset to someone who comes over and has never played a machine before (eg: hit the centre hole 3 times for multiball) and they can just enjoy doing that rather than needing to understand all the rules and a lot of people in this category reckon this is the best pin out of Jurassic Park, STTNG, Hook, Black Rose.

For me, as i said its only just better that Jurassic Park, but one thing that keeps me coming back to Indy is i've never come really close to completing all 12 modes in one game yet, so i love the challenge of that.

Mode start is an easy fix, swap the mode start stopper thingy with the centre hole scoop, since then i've probably only had 2 times the ball has bounced out.

If i was starting from scratch from two scenarios

1          If i had $5k to spend on my whole collection - i would buy 2 or 3 other titles.

2          If i already had a few machines and a bit of spare cash i would definetily have one.

My situation was that the machine was available for $300 (thats not a typo) so it was a no brainer, and this is unlikely to happen again....

I have a smallish collection of CV, MB, TZ, SM, WCS, TOM and IJ. IJ would be the last pin I'd sell, not saying that it is my favourite pin of all time although it is right up there, but it's one of the few that my whole family enjoys. I always go back playing this pin and find it deep enough in rules to keep me challenged and also easy enough for guests and kids to get a good game and see some of it's many features. Looks great, plays great and ties in perfectly with the theme(probably better than any other machine). These are just my opinions and I think you should always try playing a pin before you decide yourself if you like one or not. For me it's an absolute keeper. ^^^

this is another interesting thread
and  begs a few questions

whom are you collecting for?

are you "collecting" the games you like or
are you collecting games for the "WoW" factor

when I started all I wanted was the "A" games until I came across a interesting  discovery
some "A" titles  I simply don't like  TaF , Sttng, IJ WCS-94 but the most interesting thing I've discovered
is  DE-Stern, Capcom and Bally and GTB made games (in my opinion ) that are more fun to play
than a lot of the so called "A" titles including IJ

but to answer your question would I own a IJ...NO
its a nice game but theres probably 20-30 games out there that are more enjoyable to me
Title: Re: RATE THIS PINBALL MACHINE ?
Post by: braddo on January 17, 2010, 10:21:22 PM
This is a good thread, but someone should start a 'what is an 'A' title game' thread. Sorry can't help out with IJ cause i've never played one, don't want to get off topic but since it's been talked about, an 'A' title game to me would be Gorgar, Flash, Paragon, King of Diamonds, Meteor, Getaway II, I could go on and on and on. Shit, my whole wish list is all 'A' tltles %.%. All personal preference it's art after all.

eg. Never played or saw Flash when i was young, bought it off Rollerball simply because I could. BUT, I can play this pin for hours, it's getting better and better all the time, more challenging all the time, and i'm finding different strategies every time I play every ball. The sign of a great game, i now class it as a classic 'A' title game.

Yeah and are WAY more expensive to 'have around' just to play with, when you add it all up. Especially as a long term investment.

Well, certainly an interesting topic!

I don't think I've played one long enough to comment on the long-term keeper status, but to me it is a good enough title that is instantly recognisable. If money was no object then I would be buying a good clean example for a decent price (that way if you do get bored with it you can sell it on at what you bought it for at worst).

Given that money is an object for me I would rather be buying two or three pins for the same final sum.

+1 Dave.  Very enjoyable game and fun.

For me, I enjoy games I keep coming back to - something that has that 'hook' to keep my interest in a game.  Sometimes it can be instant, sometimes may take a few games.
I recently played a very clean example of a Pinball Magic.  This is a great game, good fun and kept me coming back.  Based on the number produced - does this make it a good or bad pin?  I also played a near mint Champion Pub.  I had walked past this game previously at Marks 100 times and never given it a second thought.  After playing it I want one.  I cannot understand how this game was not a massive hit sited..(1300+ units made).
Striker Extreme - again.  Sleeper of a game but enjoyable to play.  Same goes for LAH.  Very underrated.
I have tried and tried to get into Addams.  Just can't do it.  Many people love this game and they enjoy playing it.  Because it sold over 20,000 units does it make it the best game of all time - or was it just produced at exactly the right time with the right features, righ theme when demand was at its greatest?
IJ - I have played it about 5 times in total.  It does not do it for me but I was not a fan of the shows so I don't know whether that has any impact on it.  I would still prefer two cheaper games to it.

quote from pintoxicated.

" Personally I like the road you are on with your collection - a heap of machines that you don't see everyday, something different and not the stereotypical big name collection with bang for your buck ".

The machines I have so far are -

Batman Forever (Sega, 1995)
Black Knight 2000 (WMS, 1989)
Bugs Bunny's Birthday Ball x 2 (Bally, 1991)
Fish Tales (WMS, 1992)
Freddy: A Nightmare On Elm Street (GTB, 1994)
Godzilla (Sega, 1998)
Independence Day (Sega, 1996)
Judge Dredd (Bally, 1993)
Last Action Hero (DE, 1993)
Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (Sega, 1995)
Popeye Saves The Earth (Bally, 1994)
Space Jam (Sega, 1996)
Star Trek 25th Anniversary x 2 (DE, 1991)
Star Trek: The Next Generation x 2 (WMS, 1993)
Star Wars Trilogy (Sega, 1997)
Starship Troopers (Sega, 1997)
Tales From The Crypt (DE, 1993)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (DE, 1991)
Theatre Of Magic (Bally, 1995)
The X Files (Sega, 1997)
Twilight Zone (Bally, 1993)
Twister (Sega, 1996)
Viper Night Drivin' (Sega, 1998)
WWF Royal Rumble (DE, 1994)

Infact, i bought half of these machines because most people told me they were not A grade titles, the other half cause they were just interesting looking. And even Popeye is alot of fun. But now, i am just going to buy a -
 indianna jones
 an addams family
 a sega lost world-jurasic park
to round out the collection. I have plans for more but, the next 3 or 4 will have to do for the time being.

i dont think there is such a thing as a A grade title, just A grade prices for some pins with big reputations like Twilight Zone.
maybe the price relates to the amount of hardware like star trek next gen or twilight with so much hardware to adjust and  fix before you can sell it in A grade condition.
I realkly do think that Indianna redecalled looks bloody good though. time will tell.lol   ^^^  ^^^  ^^^
