Title: Project Re-theme :D
Post by: spacies on January 24, 2010, 05:12:22 PM
Man I have been waiting to do this for a LOOONNGGG time!

I have had a couple of candidates for this project but couldn't bring myself to ruin a good machine. After talking with  Yee last week he gave me a phone number of someone who may be selling a pinball that could be suitable.  Its a 1977 Gottlieb Quick Draw. It kinda works. It has trouble coining up and once it does go the score reel gets stuck and then no more points register.

So the deal was done and I have the machine back here. I just took some pics:

So you can see it need some love. There is some wear around the pops and some of the paint is splitting on the lower part of the playfield. The plastics in the centre strip have also sunken a bit so I will need to remove those and reseat them. I will need to do some reading and ask some experts on that one. One thing I am dissapointed about is that there is no slings. Oh well, can't get it right first time I guess?!

So on to the theme, Monster Hot Rods. I have had this theme in my head for about 2 years now and started on the art design about 18 months ago. I have gathered art and ideas and hand drawn a ton of art and probably have enough to do 5 or 6 pins since I only used a small fraction on this machine. More on that later. With my love for V8's, my own drag racing cars and working on Hot Rods and Rat Rods it wasn't too hard in the end to get inspiration and ideas. Also another thing was the original bubblegum cards in the 70's and 80's and the fact that I absolutely love the art by Ed 'Big Daddy' Roth, Johnny Ace and Kali Vera. I have purchased several books by those artists and even one called 'How to Draw Monster Hot Rods Like the Pro's!', lol.

So its all happened pretty quick since the pinball arrived a couple of days ago. I searched the web and was lucky enough to find someone who had a NOS (not installed) playfield and I got him to take several high res images so I could get a feel for the layout. He sent the images through, I stitched them together in photoshop and then moved the image to Illustrator. Once in there I measured my playfield and transformed the image to the correct size. Now I have a very close (within a couple of mm's) background to work with.

So first thing to do was to draw the location of the inserts, lane guides, plastics, drop targets etc etc. After a short time I ended up with this image:

I think a couple of things are out (hard to judge by photos) but hey, once I acutally pull the playfied down to strip it and start preparing it I will get the scanner and tape measure out and get it 99.9% spot on.

So there you go :D Its underway.

Right at this point I have just about finished the design and will post it up later.

I hope you guys enjoy this as much as I enjoy doing it! :D

PS, I don't have an actual name yet so if you have ideas, fire away!

Spacies - I will watch this with great interest also - what a fantastic idea.
I always love your artwork and only wish I could draw to that level  !!!
Very keen to see you design cabinet art, backglass and playfield plastics.

The eyeballs, monsters, hot rods, and goofy style spooky lettering looks fantastic.
I am not sure about the bumper spots but - to me doesnt seem to 'fit'  !@#

If you kept the hot rod theme going on the cab art and/ or plastics you could name the game something like ...
Freewheelin Freaks
Rockin Roadkill  !@# ^&^ !@#

Also - Is there any way you can add sound other than chimes to these old games guys?
With todays technology?

Thats simply AWESOME !

I agree with Wotto - The pops don't suit the game. How about a pop with the faces of the characters that are in the bottom of the playfield ?

Thanks mate.

Plastics are done. They are in the pic :D

As for the cabinet art I think I will go simple stencils to keep within the EM era. Not sure yet. So that just leaves the backglass :D

Yeah not so sure about the Maltese crosses either and was thinking about some clear or green translucent illuminated pops. Are these available to suit EMs?

Also yeah I am looking in to adding some sounds mate. Got any ideas?

Again, thanks.

As above about the crosses. They will go mate.

Thanks me fellow petrolhead :D

Unsure yet boss. Yeah maybe but it a pretty small area mate. Although there is a cowboy on them now and its pretty visible. I think I may just go with bloodshot eyes for targets 1,2,4 and 5 and maybe a complete machine in the middle. Someone did mention maybe to build up a car so perhaps some tyres, chassis, bodywork and engine and the centre the complete machine? That sounds ok.

I have an idea for the name and backglass. Its pretty boring but it fits. RACE?

This is a classic Ed Roth image.

Hmmm, not so sure now, lol.

I remember collecting stickers with these hotrod themes. They came out like footy cards one year in the 60's. I still had them about 10 years ago and chucked them. Wish I could have given them to you for design purposes. Think the pf is great btw

I liked the bubblegum more than the cards. Nah, jokes. I used to collect them but don't know what happened to them.

My mate has a stack of them and there are some scans on a couple of sites to browse through. Some are very cool :D

Very cool idea indeed.

Artwork is looking great and love the theme.  Certainly has that lead-sled / rat rod them going for it!

Cab would look sweet flat matt black, with gold pinstriping on it.!

Suggestion ;

Lane guides should either be all white or all red. I prefer white as there is not a lot of red in the playfield other than the "red eyes".

I agree with Nino on the lane guides.  And those flags and Pistons have broken the plain bits up nicely without overdoing it.  This is going to be one sick machine  ^^^

Yeah mate. I agree.
Actually the original lanes guides at the bottom are red but they are broken. Any clues where I can get some white ones? Or some unbroken red ones and I will paint them.

Whenever you are ready.

Sweet just took a look and this is what I have:

So I need all 4 of the large ones (all have cracks).
And 2 of the small ones. One of those is sweet but the other has a crack. So 1 will be fine if you don't have new.

And the 2 red lane guides from the bottom are stuffed. So 2 white ones of those as well. Where do you buy this stuff from? Wouldn't mind checking out some sites.

One more thing. Are there replacements for those clear plastic sheet thingys on the base of the pops? Or do you guys just cut your own? Easy enough I suppose but cutting a tidy circle can be tricky.

Another thing (sorry guys) can I get translucent inserts for this machine? Or do you think I should keep the milky ones?

Any other parts you need let me know i parted out a Fast draw not that long ago  ^^^

Oh,

If Strangeways can't help then perhaps you might be able to. Do you still have the playfield? Wouldn't mind another to hang on the wall with the same art.

Thanks!

Spacies ;

If you want to look at ordering other parts - like flipper rebuild kits you might have to look at www.pbresource.com. They sell all the bits you need BUT - it is a difficult ordering process if you are not used to it.

Sponsors have some parts ;

http://www.rtbb.com.au/catalog/index.php?cPath=40_111_136

http://www.pinballspareparts.com.au/index.php?search[terms]=lane&search[mode]=any

The red "tent style" are hard to find. I'll check to see if I have some old ones.

The pop bumper mylar (non adhesive) are here

Awesome cheers.

I don't need anything from PB (flippers work ok) as I can get most between the sponsors sites. Yeah seems the only thing will be the tent plastics.

I will wait to see what you have and ddstoys before I put the word out.

I can polish up the pops body but may need some caps too.

Thanks again.

A small update.

I did a test print at Hamishs place on A3 paper and taped them together:

Overlayed it on the playfield and found it was a bit short. So my measurement were off  !@)

Since that shot I have changed a bit of the art. I will update that soon.

I also had a go at the backglass:

I think I will call it RACE? and have RPM on the inserts. Thoughts?

Over the weekend I sanded the art off the playfield, removed all the inserts because I am going to make some new ones, sanded the  bottom apron and the metal apron thing at the top. Also the cover over the shooter, the side rails and prepped the head box. I only have the actual cabinet to prep then spray some paint on everything. Oh and the pops will get some paint too.

Man, so much to do, so little time to do it :(

Love the theme, this is going to come up fantastic.

Not sure on the name though personally, for mine it is a little plain. This pin deserves a more fitting title I reckon.

If you are going Ed Roth style why not something like Reaper Racers, or a drag racing theme like Monster Mile! Track Monsters maybe.

I like the style for the RPM backglass name it is more eerie looking.

Ok, ok I get the picture.  <.>

Lets go back to something more catchy then.

It has to be something to do with pinball. What about some sort of acronym for EM? Electro Monsters?

I have new insert plastics being made from a different material. It is a fancy coloured acrylic which is more translucent than the opaque old ones. Oh and also some new plastics too.

Thanks again chaps.

Um, not yet mate. I only just PMed ddstoys about the tent plastics. Do you have some? I may need a couple of pop caps.

I need to order some bits from RTBB. I will take a look tonight and post up what I was going to buy and what I am missing. I am quite keen to paint the plastics I was going to buy so I don't really need new ones, although they may be stronger than old ones.

I can help with second hand lane guides - I MAY have some "tent" ones left over from a Genie I did a while ago. After you have ordered, post what you need and we will get it sorted out  ^^^

With the "tent" plastics - you will have to measure the distance between the holes the posts go through - either 2 1/2 inch or 2 1/8 inch.

Playfield looks awesome Spacies   ^^^ , only one thing I dont quite think fits in is the Coop's 'smoking devils'. It is not drawn in the same cartooninsh style, and was not from the same era.
That said Coop is an unbelievable artist and I think you could easily do a pin with some of his other awesome images, sexy devilish women, etc.
For those of you not familiar with Coops work check out some it here: http://artofcoop.com/ (http://artofcoop.com/)
