Title: Asteroid Annie & the Aliens
Post by: The pinballist formally known as Dean Morgan on December 22, 2008, 10:18:26 PM
Along with my Countdown restoration I am pleased to say that today my latest pin (another System 1) 'Asteroid Annie and the Aliens'  arrived.  Whilst it is in fair nick as it is, it will slowly receive the full restore.

Interestingly Asteroid Annie and the Aliens is the rarest of all system 1 games with only 211 made.  It was also made in 1980 after Gottlieb had changed to their System 80 electronic architecture. They had relesed 4 or 5 system 80 games before makeing this system 1 game, bazzar!

Here are some pics of it today in the gamesroom.  I will update these as I go along.

It is a great game to play. Big SDTM drainer though, need to keep on your toes. Really is one of my favorite games.

So there's only 1 display on this game? How does it work with multi players?

I did have a chat with Pascal about the possibility of building a two player mode into the game. Very much on the "well maybe one day" list, but it would be fun if he can do it. (Well I know he *can*, but whether he will is the issue).

The story goes that they built this game just to use up the remaining System 1 boards, don't know how true that would be though

Backglass is the biggest problem with some flacking around the edges.  Where are you located as I would like a price to restore it?
The cabinet has come apart on the front left hand side and needs re-glueing etc.

General cleanup inside & out, many globes not operating or dim due to high resistances etc

Dean,

Have seen a few N.O.S. glasses for this game sell in the US over the past few years, so keep an eye out for them! If I see one will let you know...would be worth contacting Mike Pasac in the US

Wow that would be awesome if he did do this, but with only 211 made and probably only 100 or so still in operation it would have to be a labour of love on his behalf.  But I agree would be great if Pascal did do it.

The story goes that they built this game just to use up the remaining System 1 boards, don't know how true that would be though

From Clay's pinrepair.com Gottlieb Sys 1 guide -

Asteroid Annie differs from others, being a single player game (Annie was made well after Gottlieb had changed to their new System80 boardset in early 1980). The reason for this was Ed Krynski (game designer) wanted to design one more classic single player card games before he retired. A call was made to the Gottlieb service department inquiring about the number of leftover System1 CPU board, and they made 211 games based on the 300 board available in the service department's stock.

Mike Pacak NEVER answer emails... I emailed him several times without reply.. !*!

so I hear he really does not answer small timers after Backglasses ?

Great score BTW - congrats  #*#

Interesting looking game although I cannot see the connection between using Aliens and cards. The Backglass may be a play on the old card playing dogs picture or something.

Found this the other day too, very different version than to what Clay says (which I quoted earlier) and given the source, likely closer to the truth (and Tony). Starts quite early (a page down or so) -

Sorry, but the link doesn't work for me - I think their server could be down at the moment or something? Can anyone else get to the site?

Yeah, working for me now, too - must have been a temporary outage.
