Title: Joker Poker Repaint
Post by: pinnies4me on March 25, 2011, 12:23:16 AM
One of my favorite games needed a facelift, so I got some stencils from Retropin

http://aussiepinball.com/index.php?topic=445.0

and got to work

This is the first time I have ever stripped a cab back to wood for a repaint, so it took some motivation to start sanding away the old paint, but I worked up the courage and got started. Some undercoat, and then the base white. After that I did the toothbrush speckles, and then remembered I should start taking some photos!

I like the red

After adding the red, I gave everything a coat of satin clear to seal the red so the stencils wouldn't likely take any paint off. Seemed to work well.

The black really brings it altogether.. ..

Looks great  ^^^

The spots came up really well.
What type of paint? Enamel or Acrylic? Sprayed or brushed on?
Starting my first repaint myself, so I am keen to get all the info I can.

Cheers
Dave

Really nice result Nick... really does look good.
Im glad the stencils worked out for you.
I always kinda hold my breath when i see a pic of a finished cab with my stencils in case it hasnt gone right..

Sitting here smiling away.. very satisfying for me i must admit.
Thanks for posting mate.. is a bloody nice looking cabinet!

The stencils were really good Gav, one was a tad out, but with a little wiggling I got it right.

I'll be hitting you up for another set for the other JP now I'm feeling confident.

I don't have a spray gun, and can't find the motivation to want to learn their intricacies.

The paint is a quality lacquer paint (or so my brother tells me). Brand is Anchor, I suspect most automotive paint supply shops will keep it. Goes on beautifully and dries to touch in 10 minutes.

The specs were done with a toothbrush - dip in paint (not too heavy on the amount) and flick by running a finger over. Practiced a little on some cardboard until I felt confident.

Thanks Nick, I'll look into the Lacquer paints, I'm totally clueless when it comes to paints.

Looks AWESOME Nick !

Did you have the paint matched and then had the supplier "can" the paint into pressure packs ? That RED is really vibrant.

No - the surviving red on the existing JPs were two different shades, one very dark (almost scarlet) and others I've seen look sort of orange. So without a reference I just chose a nice looking red. The white was a "sea mist" which is sort of antique white. And the black was, well, black! :)

My brother can do the mix and can, but didn't do that here for the reasons above.

Looks excellent Nick . Congrats on tackling your 1st cab repaint . At least you had Gav's stencils .. its a lot scarier when you have made your own , remove the original paint and then hope for the best.  :D

That does look nice Nick, and it is hard to get motivated to paint your own cabinet because there is a lot to it.

Top job Nick come along way from the crusty old cab and headbox you started with if this is the one I think it is.  Well worth the time and effort to get it right.   Well done

Next week for a game  %.%

I got some from Mr Pinball, but they were a bit long and I had to cut them off so they didn't break through the inside of the cab.
