Saw a Tron on ebay that caught my eye and got me thinking but I don't know much about them.
I thought the price was right at $3950, it was the base version and only 4 months old but was located in a pub so I don't know how much damage can be done in 4 months?
I't caught my eye as I have been interested in a late model Stern for some time with Spiderman being my first preference but I've never played a Spiderman only going on what others have told me and of course looks I really love the look of Spiderman.
So in summary:
Is $3950 a bargin or does it sound about right?
Should I be worried about it being on site in a pub?
Is it a good player and how does it compare to other late model Sterns as a player and in particular Spiderman?
Thanks for you opinions
Tim

bargin,if you know how to fix a stern. &^&

I have only played the LE so I can't give you a comparison but the LE has the moving item near the disk (sorry forgot the name) where the standard has the static item, and the ramps glow various colours - I didn't mind the game play though prefer IM over it. You could put el wire around the ramps and make it look similar to a LE.
Price sounds about right considering if not not to bad as the last sold by AMD about 15 months ago for $6600.
I had reservations when I got my Iron Man which was sited for close to 18 months and it has done amazingly well, with no vandalism and no noticeable wear for 5000 plays - I think many a couple of transport scuffs on the front corners - black texta fixed that. Where is it located - city / state ?.
As for Game play, alot of people say Spiderman plays awesome so Tron sits a few back, I prefer my Iron Man over spider amn and enjoyed Tron though I think I was blinded by the looks, but the Spiderman will cost you more than a Iron Man and definitely more than a Tron.
If you can get there to test definitely do it or if in the Newcastle area happy to test for you to check for damage and that it plays well. I am sure some others in other areas can offer some help.
Hope that helps.

try the dealers tim, might be one lurking around for a better nic one.nib

Thanks for all that. It is in Melbourne only about 15 minutes from my place so I'll contact the seller to find out which pud and go down there tomorrow and check it out for myself.
Thanks again

best of luck mate.I think a new ac/dc would be better value for only a few $ more.
-
I prefer Tron all day long. More on the playfield, more missions. Much better player IMO than SM.
Sub 4 grand is a great price if machine is good. ^^^
-
Buy it at that price its cheap!
Should be $5k

+1 Cracker of a game

Good luck with it, give it a good round of games and take few photos so you have think about it when you leave the pub and keen to hear what you decide.
-
Tron is a good game except for the flynns arcade kickout. Nice flow and good speed, not Ironman fast but nothing is as fast as IM.
Ironman and Spiderman are better players for mine....SM has one the best wizard modes on any pin but for the $3950 Tron is a bargain.
Whatever you choose from the 2 you will be happy imo.
-
I've played the Tron pro and it didn't do much for me, but for under $4000 i'd consider it. For me SM is streets ahead of Tron.
ETA..What do IM and SM home use only go for at the moment ?

+1 sm is a far better and deeper game than tron.
I guess it's what you are prepared to pay for one and how much you want one.
I would reckon 5-5.5k for a spidey and around the same for a IM. You might find one cheaper, who knows.
There is a huo IM on ebay atm for $5250, I think that's pretty fair.
There is a guy in cairns selling a sited spidey for 5.5k neg but apparently the game is in excellent condition.
If Avengers isn't made or is made and is a shitter I will be chasing another sm.

A HUO spiderman sold on the gold coast recently for $4600. It was in excellent condition.
Another SM sold for $5000 to a collector who really wanted it from interstate. I was asked to go look at one for 2 different buyers.
Prices of 2nd hand sterns have come down since new Sterns can be had for $5950 with 6 months warranty.

Also, since a QLD seller recently sold a whack of brand new in box Stern Ironmans (plus other titles brand new) that he bought in from Hungary, and sold them for $4750 or less, that has also brought the prices down in the local market. I was offered one of these Hungary delivered Ironmans recently for 4 grand. It only had a few hundred games on it.
It would be hard to sell a 2nd hand Ironman for more money than people paid for a brand new one since everyone up here knows what people recently paid. Having said that, the Hungary delivered machines also have no factory warranty, which also brings the price of those ones right down.
Any 2nd hand stern in good condition is worth considering. An australian delivered machine will hold its value better. The Tron looks like good buying.
$4600 for sm is a bargain...good unders on one of the best if not the best stern pin made.
There were 4 nib IM from that stock and one used, hardly a whole whack, the rest were nib Avatar( 3). Warranty means little to me when you have beaky the super tech and other quality techs in brisbane to help with any problems, if there are any.It sure beats paying to send it back to sydney and waiting..waiting waiting, after paying top dollar for something that should work with no issues.
Should have grabbed the IM while you had the chance, 4k was a great deal for a game of that quality..good luck getting one at that price again.
It shouldn't matter if you got a great deal and others know the price..bad luck to those who didn't strike while the iron was hot...lol..if you picked a baragin for $1500 and it was worth $2000 or more to a prospective buyer would you sell it for $1500...of course you wouldn't.

I've never seen any SM go for those prices. Sounds like a great deal.
ETA...If the seller still has the IM for sale i'd be interested. My NIB is badged Austria.

Yeah cavey is right there was a guy on the coast last year who was having trouble selling his for the price he wanted and it went for 5k. Bargain!

I think a Tron for 3K would be a very very good bargain if it was in good condition.
What bad things have you heard about it?

Yeah I have heard mixed things but a nice Tron for $3000 I would buy and find out for myself...could always move it on for a profit i didn't like it.
What have you heard???
-
The audio on the TRON was a little lacking when first released but I believe a gamecode update fixed it and added alot more cool audio. That was the only gripe I have heard from a owner who got one of the first TRON release games. But TRON is a really striking colourful game with beautiful artwork, both cabinet and playfield.
I know this might sound funny, but the artwork on the playfield is very relaxing when u play the game. I am hoping STERN continues with the TRON so I can get one down the track if money permits. Variety is the spice of life. IF u liked the movie, TRON should be a good pick up.

Crystal balling now, but I predict the price point gap between second hand Stern Pro and LE models to become even more pronounced (particularly Pro models falling)
I would wait on this one for a while (unless it is a must have).
Another outcome that Stern didn't anticipate with the tiered pricing model (or maybe they did?)
Edit:
There is another run of Tron Pro being done as we speak by Stern. Friend in the US just had his delivered yesterday - build date April 19th 2012.

Like most things it will come down to supply and demand at the time, some of the Stern pro pins that have not had multiple LE versions made might do better than the ones that have had 2 or 3 LE versions and it might come down to individual titles as well and how popular or unpopular they become with old and new buyers alike.I guess time will tell.
-
I agree with CC(Daz). Some models will hold their value very well.
If anything some LE models might drop a litle more than others. Some LE models where not many were made might climb.
That Tron is good buying at 4 grand, a complete steal at 3 grand.
The aussie dollar has dropped, so i expect to see the $5950 price to climb on the next new Pro models, but am hoping it doesnt. I wish more Trons were in stock in Australia, but no one has any, making the supply zero. Could help prices stay very good for them.

Yep spot on with the complete steal at 3k, I think it's a 4.5k game at least all day but prices have been dropping on just about everything so maybe there are some great bargains on the horizon?
Great artwork and gameplay is fun with cool flow.

only one reason Stern would re-release TRON... there is a demand for it!
An absolute cracker of a game, complex in its simplicity, certainly not for everyone
but for some reason that machine seems to "gel" and keeps bringing players back to it

there would be no demand for a re-release of Tron...the last movie was terrible and did nothing to enhance the rep of the pin.
It will be a very fine stand alone stern ina few yrs plus.

Where did the $3K for Tron come from ? The cheapest i've seen is the ebay one with a starting bid of $3950.
Personally not a title i would buy after playing at TZ. Maybe I need more time on it.

Timezone, not Twilight Zone.
As for TZ the pin, i'd never buy one. Boring, over rated and over priced.

Tron is being re-run. I sent the Stern factory a email asking and they have advised they have orders to fill and will start production again of TRON after the AC/DC line slows down.
The Stern website also shows the game to be in current production. ^^^

I read on pinside that someone received a Tron with a build date of 19 April 2012. So they have been running for a while it would seem. No Tron LE though just Pro's.

Yes, said it back on page two of this thread so emailing Stern to confirm was a bit redundant. They are also doing a short run of Avatar and Rolling Stones as well to fulfill a specific customer order (most likely Betson Amusements or one of the other 800 pound gorilla customers they have since I can't see any other demand for either of those titles otherwise.) !^!

I had emailed Stern about TRON many weeks ago, before this thread had even begun.
I had actually asked if future TRONs to Australia would have any upgrades done to them, namely the new Red LED display, and the new sound upgrades etc, and specifically when and If production would start again. I got a definate answer about production starting again, and they were on the fence about any future upgrades for aussie machines, but tending to lean towards the "proably not" answer when I pushed them to be specific.
I also asked about Transformers PRO and the Avatar PRO model with the same upgrades and got the same answers. ^^^

Hey Spacejam, did you end up playing?, and what did you think of it? Did you end up buying it?

Hey Spacejam, did you end up playing?, and what did you think of it? Did you end up buying it?
Hi
Was gonna wait and see what happens before I made this post but I'll bring you up to speed now and then let you know later if it happened or not.
I went and played it last Sunday afternoon. I am told it is 4 months old (but hard to know for sure). It has spent it's days in crown casino and I guess as a result of this (there security) it looks like it just came out of the box. I was very impressed with the look of the game, majic cabinet and 3D backglass but the playfield was no to my tastse...this is one area where I'm a little more old school.
I played about 10 games and to be honest wasen't really that much into it. I didn't really let this worry me as I know from past experience that I have never really been into any of my games until I have given them a fair bit of play..kind of grow on me as I get to know them. That said there really didn't seem to be that much going on.
I had a few problems with the ball getting stuck down one of the kick out holes and then it started doing some random stuff such as scoring while the ball was stuck down the hole and the DMD doing weird stuff. As I had never played Tron before I didn't know if this was normal or not but it didn't feel right to me. Also it was hard to hear over the music being played..One last thing the lighting was very low so difficult to really look at the finer detail for scratches dings..ect.
Anyway I'll try to cut a long storey short here. I told him of the faults and he said he will get his teck to check it out. Rang me on Wedensday and advised me it was a stuffed board. He is changing the board under warranty and was meant to call me Friday to bring me up to date but as yet I have not heard from him..I have left him 2 messages so will have to wait and see.
We did agree on a price but no money has changed hands so we shall see I made him a low ball offer figuring he would probably reject and was suprised when he accpted. I figure if it doesn't grow on me I can always move it on.
Will ring him again tomorrow and keep you updated.
Regards
Tim

IF the machine is in good condition, u will definately be able to move it on at the right price to someone who likes the game.
Give it a go, update the software to the latest gamecode which will help alot. Play it for a while, but at the same time, study the game rules in the manual etc which will definately help you to understand how to get the most out of the game. Hope it works out and u score a good game n have lots of fun playing it.
-
grab it, it will inspire and teach you.. the pinball heavens have opened ^^^

*%* lol, who care's who said it first.
Good to see you have adopted shootar's impeccable grammar and punctuation skills, BrissyGuy. *)*
For an answer to your question, see the overelaborate post below yours, as to who apparently cares (maybe a little too much).
Another grammar nazi. Homepin is looking for a first year apprentice. You've got the job.
It would be interesting to reflect on the current educational standards and the resultant lack of understanding of grammar and spelling, compared with what was taught in my day. As many of us are my age or older, I would have thought the level would be a lot higher than it actually is, so I guess while people were taught it, it didn't stick, or they just don't care about getting it right.
Proper use of grammar and correct spelling aid comprehension, which is why some of us bother.
-
TRON photos and game info now appearing in OUT OF PRODUCTION on the lower pages of the STERN site.
For some reason the TRON photo appears as the first STERN game ever made, versus one of the last games produced when u go searching for it in out of production. Maybe they will continue with it after AC/DC like they said but who knows for now ?
-
I played a Tron the other day sited, didn't do much for me, not sure if it was broken or working as intended, but when you launched the ball, if you didn't nudge the machine it would immediately drain right down the middle between the flippers! Not sure what I was doing wrong... But I must have pulled the plunger 100% back, launched the ball, drained, ball saved and repeat 5-6 times before it got into play by nudging it into the pop bumbers.

Is there any definitive word on whether Tron is getting another production run?
I came across a thread on pin side and it was believed that production has ceased
