Title: Williams / Bally ST TNG Restore
Post by: Strangeways on May 19, 2012, 12:44:34 PM
Next in the DMD Restoration / Reconditioning Queue is a Bally / Williams "Star Trek - The New Enterprise" (ST TNG). I've never liked this game - mainly because I've seldom played a perfectly working example. The only game that worked perfectly was Marco's (pinfan), so I face this restoration knowing that I have time to have the game working 100%.

Objective

Rather than a recondition, I want to have this game as good as I can get it. I plan on full LEDS, new PinballInc Ramps (RTBB), new plastics set and anything else I can get my hands on to have a really nice game. I'm not a huge fan of mods, so I'm leaving is factory except the LEDs. This game will be sold on completion.

Condition

The game plays, but as per most ST TNGs, it has switch issues causing the game to eject two balls on the first ball and also the drop target is not working. So the game is kinda playable, but the rules won't be working.

Playfield - 10/10 - Dirty. That's about it ! More fine dust than dirt.

Cabinet - 9/10 - Really nice. No major dints or scuff marks. Some scratches on the head artwork, but easily one of the best cabinets I've seen.

Electronics - 9/10 - J120 and J121 have been replaced - badly !

Let's Begin - The "Before" pictures

Here's a 5 second "wipe down" with Nifti. That's the best playfield I've seen on an ST TNG. Most of my games are hand picked, so I can afford to pick the better conditioned machines  ^^^

Under the hood - Everything seems ok. The Subway ramp is ALWAYS broken on this title. But not this one. The cannon cable assembly is not worn, suggesting that this game has not had as much play as most ST TNG's I've seen.

Then we look at the only bad part of the game - The Neutral Zone - ALWAYS worn. I will repair this section and place a cliffy. I've seen some games where the expense of a cliffy protector is wasted as the section is not repaired FIRST. I don't do shortcuts, so this will be addressed.

Disassembly

The subway assembly is a good indicator of how much play the game has had. The plastic has no breaks - this is a good sign, but upon further investigation, one of the metal parts holding one of the diverters has a break in the weld. This was only found AFTER I started to disassemble this section. No use in cleaning the playfield if this assembly is left filthy.

Off to MartyJ to have the section TIG welded - and as always, a perfect job. Now the diverter works 100%.

I HAD to take a picture of the cleaned plastic subway ramp. These have been broken or butchered on EVERY game I've seen. This does have a couple of cracks, but is not broken. Amazing !

A clean and rebuild (with new sleeves) and the unit works 100%

Alpha Ramp has taken a beating, and has a simple, yet effective repair. This will be replaced.

Cabinet

As per all games, the cabinet is completely stripped and everything is cleaned, polished or replaced. In this picture, I've repainted the translite surround and the inside of the cabinet.

Sorry about the focus - but it looks and smells a lot better  &&

Playfield

Here's some candy shots of the playfield after polishing. These pictures were taken at night. I'm REALLY pleased with the outcome !

Sweet looking game - 10/10, 9/10 etc to start with - not much room for improvement but seems you can find that 1/10  space, nice work!

I've been fortunate with my imports. Most games have been at a high standard to start with, and I just place the icing on the cake. I've just placed the order for ramps, LEDs etc.. Should look and play very nice  ^^^

Looks like a great starting platform.

Good luck with the resto, Im sure it will come up nice !

Tons of work done in the last few days. Had to wait for some Ramps from RTBB, so I've caught up and it is coming together nicely. Since the game was in such good condition to start with, I decided to really make a nice example - complete with ALL new ramps and LEDs. Should look and play great.

The trigger assembly was slightly worn, so I cleaned it up, resprayed it and then added a gloss clear. Looks much better !

Drying after the final clear ;

Finished assembly on the left, and another assembly (from one of my other ST TNGs) on the right. Big difference.

Fitted to cabinet ;

Outhole repair. I've seen a common mistake with the installation of cliffy protectors. The worn area should be repaired BEFORE installing the cliffy. It is not hard ! Hyper Thin protectors will eventually follow the shape of the worn area. So don't be lazy and cover up the wear !

I use Quickwood. Amazing product - http://www.rtbb.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=127_153&products_id=1799

Repaired area

Cliffy installed !

The Large Neutral zone target always gets a laugh. I always thought the Kardassian's were from a different planet, and here's PROOF !

New plastics look great. Couple clears not included, but they are not seen, so it does not matter.

Old VS New - Colors much better and deeper. New Shuttle Decals ready to install.

I'm installing the plastic protector kit for this title. Who reasons - New plastics set, and this game has the prototype / Sample coils which are stronger than the production coils. The game will run faster, so the plastics AND ramp protectors will be a great idea.

RAMPS !!

Alpha Ramp was broken and needed to be replaced. I decided to replace all three. Delta was chipped, and Beta was fine. Greg at RTBB had all in stock, so I ordered BARE Alpha and Beta, and full Delta. New ramps make a HUGE difference, and I've been installing the PinballInc Ramps on all my restores (if needed) - but I look for excuses to install them even when not needed !

Bare ramp swapout

I use my rivet press found at pinrestore.com. I built it out of a kit form and I use it for all bare ramp replacements. Here's the original Alpha Ramp.

I remove the rivets using a dremel - wearing eye protection. I shear the rivet with no damage to the old ramp or fittings. From there, disassemble the rest of the hardware.

Bare Ramp - ready to install the ramp flap, ramp fitting, switch and decal.

Hardware installed

Here's a tricky bit if you want to install ramp protectors. Due to the fact the ramp protectors were made for original ramps which are thinner, you need to slightly modify the ramp. Two holes need to be drilled (mandatory). At this point, you soon discover that the thickness of the PinballInc ramp is more than the old ramp, and the protectors don't fit ! Easy fix - you need to use the dremel and cut a groove for the left hand side of the ramp, and trim away a small section on the right side of the ramp. The small piece of clear plastic that sits above the leftmost lane guide needs to be trimmed as well. I used a thick washer inbetween the left side of the ramp entrance protector and the post to elevate the protector, otherwise it digs into the ramp. Picture explains it better !

Ramp installed, and ready to move on to the others. Flipper kits have been installed and the first testing with LEDs was successful.

I considered the mirror blades, but I thought I'd leave the mods up to the buyer. Sometimes mods can make the game unaffordable. I wanted to restore the game as original as possible, but add the features of LEDs, as this game is a Bally / Williams that will look great with that mod.

BETA Ramp replaced, and finally Delta Is replaced.

Door was straight and in very good condition. I stripped it, cleaned it and then repainted it. Looks heaps better.

Now the playfield is fully populated, I can test of LED placement. Easier done in the dark so it can highlight areas. Similar to T3, I used predominantly Blue for GI. I included Alblaze-9 #89 flashers and they look great. All are the 108 degree standard LEDs from RTBB. I used #906 flashers in the BORG Ship and they look AWESOME. All lamps are LEDs except the cannons - they looked much better with standard lamps. The game can be played. New flipper kits installed, and a few minor adjustments need to be made.

Translite LEDs look amazing. I NEVER use 906 Flasher LEDs in back boxes. Might need tweaking..

You can both pop over for a game  ^^^

I know know why this is such a great player - the game MUST be working PERFECTLY for the rules to work. VERY DEEP ruleset. I've completely changed my mind on this game (No, I can't keep it) - It deserves the accolades. It is just a VERY demanding game to restore. Worthy of the title "Super Pin".

Are you going to install the correct black legs?

This is my conundrum. On the flyer, they are black. I've never seen a ST TNG with black legs. I have a black set, but they are not as nice as the chrome set. What I was going to do was offer the buyer either the chrome or black.

Hi Strangeways
Excellent looking STNG, I have one which is in great condition and I'm about to do some overdue touch-ups.
Just wanted to know what brand and type of paints and lacquer you used on the coin door?
I'll be ordering a new Alpha ramp from RTBB and I'm also after the left outline guide.
I brought this machine with me from South Africa some years ago and I bought it from the original owner operator, it came with black legs.
It also has plastic left and right outlane guides, all others I've seen have standard brushed steel, the left one is broken so I'll be posting a picture and request for help in another thread.
Cheers

Paint for the coin door - Knights "satin black". You can get it from Bunnings. Don't fall for the trap of using sticky tape over the coin windows, and spraying directly over the door while still in the cabinet ! Dismantle the door, use etch primer if necessary. A couple of top coats and you are ready to go.

All my ramps are bought from RTBB. They are PERFECT and they really set the game off. You might want to look at buying the entire set if the budget allows.

My outlane guides are brushed steel on the bottom, then clear then new plastics. Post a picture of what you need, as I have plenty of leftovers if you need them.

Love the way LEDs change a game wasn't a huge fan but have recently done the green LEDs behind my creature and it looks way better.

+1 about everything having to be 100% working played a few on site and hated it thought it was one of the most overrated games going.     But after playing a fully working game it's a whole new game...

One thing that shits me is some of the sounds.....   We have spotted a kardashian ship...      Can't even play pinball without hearing about them over publisised celebrity no hopers  %.%

Thanks for the info re paint Nino.
I'll post some photos of the outlane guides tomorrow, I've searched by part number online and always get 'out of stock' Mark-c's guys had a look around for me and also came up empty handed.  The game has all 3 layers as you described but the bottom layer is plastic (correctly moulded for the game) instead of brushed steel. I think the long term hits from the ball dropping into the flipper lane from the wire ramp return has lead to the top section of the guide getting smashed. Pics will show the problem!
Title: Re: Williams / Bally ST TNG Restore
Post by: Pinlinds on June 02, 2012, 01:45:29 PM
Hi Nino
Here are two pics of the ST TNG lane guides from my machine.
The top one shows the left outlane and if you look carefully you can see where the lane guide has broken away and does not extend up to the screw post.
In the second picture I've taken the left and right guides out of the game. The top set is the right lane and the bottom set is from the left side. As you can see the very top row of plastic is the correct length (for the right side) it too has a tiny section broken off around the actual screw hole.
The very bottom row of plastic is the broken one from the left lane. So all on all other Sts I've seen this row is brushed steel.
I'd be happy to buy a complete set left and right or just get the brushed steel guides if can. So any help would be appreciated. Being a wide body it has different size and shape to most other WMS/Ballys.
Cheers
Lindsay

Found a solution to my lane guides, Pinbits sells an extended length guide to reduce ball drains on STTNG. I'll try those, if they make the game too easy I'll file them down to the correct size. apologies for hijacking the thread though!

Boards are all done. Irrespective of connectors "looking good" I replaced the GI strings of J120 and J121. The capacitors and Bridge Rectifiers are replaced and trace wires installed. Some recent "short cuts" I've seen on "shopped" games have left out the jumper wires and I forgot the Jumper for the 18VDC, which caused all sorts of issues with the 12VDC line dropping and optos going nuts ! All fixed with the installed Jumper. I also had an issues with the Drop Target switch intermittently not registering the "down" position. This creates havoc with locked balls. I replaced that switch and that problem was solved. Then I had to adjust the subway ramp, as the machine would go into "ball search" mode because the back legs were not high enough. New leg levellers in the rear fixed that ! The game has one intermittent issue at present, and that is that the coin door switches activate during a game (ghost switches). Could either be the coin door switches or the interface board. Difficult to track down as it rarely occurs, but I have to have the machine working perfectly before I let it go.

The game is almost done, except for the issue of original legs. Lucky I had a set which cleaned up well. So the buyer has a choice of chrome or black (factory legs).

While I was finishing off the game, I worked on the last moving part, the credit knocker. ALWAYS over looked, I was not surprised to see a problem with it. This is why ALL coil sleeves should be replaced, not just the "easy to replace" coil sleeves that have to be done. A fully reconditioned game HAS to have ALL done.

Credit Knocker looks "fine" - But is it ?

Hmmmmm..

Now is works and SOUNDS much better.  ^^^

Some BLING shots of the final configuration of the LEDS. Time has been spent with placement for effect. There's absolutely no use in simply installing white LEDs as it never gives the correct effect. The only way to achieve this is to have a huge selection at hand and then swap and change as you rebuild the playfield.

Bling shot under the playfield. Every mechanism has been stripped, cleaned, repaired and had any broken or worn parts replaced. BIG JOB for this game, as it has extra solenoids. Subway ramp was covered earlier, and is seldom cleaned properly. No use in cleaning a playfield if these details are not done.

Apron Cards done and the playfield is 100% finished.

I have one of these in storage that I will restore one day. How good do the LED's look, when you put LED's in a game like this do you keep a list of what LED's goes where so it makes it easier for your next ST TNG build?.

I have a list of the LEDs I used on the game. I spent just under $250 on this game - which includes flashes etc on the playfield. A lot of it is "common sense" - I use blues on GI, because the plastics are predominantly blue. White under plastics is a waste of LEDs, you have to match the surrounding plastics. I have two other ST TNGs in the Q, and I will do the same job - LEDs, Ramps, Plastics. Really makes a difference. With all the new parts and LEDs, the game can be properly enjoyed.

I used 180 Degree LEDs under the playfield. No super brights on this game, and zero ghosting  %$%

I change them with the game on. Just leave the coin door open (for WPC games), so the coils are not live.

My mate with the STTNG has all LEDs except the GIs, was going to suggest he looks into doing the GI like yours.  Looks great!  *%*

GI - I used the Wide Angle LEDs - http://www.rtbb.com.au/catalog/index.php?cPath=22_119_121

The game is finished. all the teething problems have been sorted. I had an issue with phantom door buttons closing while the door was closed which ended up being a prblem with U16 LM339. Replaced the chip and it works perfectly. I had the resident ST TNG Guru (Marco - Pinfan) play the game yesterday and he was happy everything was working 100%.

The last step was to install a new DMD display - the old one was good, but the bottom right hand corner was slightly fading. Not normally seen until the "Command Decision" feature lights up all pixels and you see 6-10 dark pixels. Would still be ok to leave the display in the game, but I wanted the game to be perfect. The game can have either black or chrome legs. Up to the buyer.

I am not a great fan of the blue G.I but you have done an AMAZING job Nino on this Next Gen machine for sure.

Your price for a fully reco machine was also a bargain.

Great work Nino, you have made the trekky pinball fans like me proud for sure. Really nice job.  Excellent work 4 sure.  ^^^ ^^^

I was so impressed with this thread I have given Nino the go ahead for a similar restore.

Nino is about half way through and he has been great with communication and advice.

Can't wait!!

I will document your game within it's own thread. I just have not had the time lately. Plenty for me to catch up on !

I probably don't have enough posts yet to view the right section for trading
but do you list these for sale on the forums or only your website etc

These games usually sell as I'm restoring them. Sometimes I just start a game that I want to do, and a member PMs an expression of interest and then it is sold once I work out the sale value. You can look at previous restorations as a guide and then look in my section - http://aussiepinball.com/index.php?topic=8618.0 (http://aussiepinball.com/index.php?topic=8618.0) - for my current inventory in the "restoration queue" !

Rarely do my games make it to eBay. I've sold one in 4 years.

Nice work, looks a treat and would play super sweet too. I like the chrome legs, but each to their own

Hey Nino, What kind of paint did you use when repainting the coin door?

Paint for the coin door - Knights "satin black". You can get it from Bunnings. Don't fall for the trap of using sticky tape over the coin windows, and spraying directly over the door while still in the cabinet ! Dismantle the door, use etch primer if necessary. A couple of top coats and you are ready to go.

Thanks for the heads up. Might have to take a closer look at those lists

Cheers! Thanks for the tips! Definitely going to have to do that to mine after looking at how yours turned out
