Title: Hankin Cocktail Clone
Post by: ktm450 on May 30, 2013, 09:51:48 PM
I recently received some of the material to make a Hankin clone from my friend Chippy who passed away in March, he had completed making a machine himself, but had cut material and gathered some of the equipment for two machines, so he gave me all the timber and glass, LCD monitor, piano hinge and a jamma harness.

Before I go on this is not my design,  I am copying someone’s design, who copied someone else’s, who copied Hankins original design  #@# After a fair bit of research looking at pictures, I thought it was the neatest look which is somewhat faithful to the original.

I started by making a template for the side ‘wings’ so I had a guide for the router to follow.  With a bit of help from a mate who supplied his router and talent, we then cut and routed them and used a 1.2mm slot cutter for the T-moulding.

(http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z397/stewart_clan/Hankin/100_0951_zpse4feb19d.jpg) (http://s1187.photobucket.com/user/stewart_clan/media/Hankin/100_0951_zpse4feb19d.jpg.html)

Then cut the shape for the top, routed the bevel for the outside of the monitor, routed a rebate for the monitor to sit into, then cut the T-mould slots

(http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z397/stewart_clan/Hankin/100_0950_zpsbe205a6e.jpg) (http://s1187.photobucket.com/user/stewart_clan/media/Hankin/100_0950_zpsbe205a6e.jpg.html)

Then cut some air vents into one side panel with the router and cut the T-mould slots into both side panels.

(http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z397/stewart_clan/Hankin/100_0952_zpsd05c552c.jpg) (http://s1187.photobucket.com/user/stewart_clan/media/Hankin/100_0952_zpsd05c552c.jpg.html)

I welded up some legs for the cab, before welding I drilled the mounting holes in the milling machine so they are indexed the correct distance and are parallel through the RHS. I welded small nuts into the legs to mount the leg levelers.

(http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z397/stewart_clan/Hankin/100_0953_zps2bbf15ba.jpg) (http://s1187.photobucket.com/user/stewart_clan/media/Hankin/100_0953_zps2bbf15ba.jpg.html)

I then started assembly, cut some speaker holes and a fan hole,

(http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z397/stewart_clan/Hankin/100_0954_zps7c0e205e.jpg) (http://s1187.photobucket.com/user/stewart_clan/media/Hankin/100_0954_zps7c0e205e.jpg.html)

Test mounted legs, hinges, coin mech and lock.  I used a lot of screws for the wings as that is where they are usually picked up from when moving and the cab is surprisingly heavy.

(http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z397/stewart_clan/Hankin/100_0956_zpsab2893cb.jpg) (http://s1187.photobucket.com/user/stewart_clan/media/Hankin/100_0956_zpsab2893cb.jpg.html)

Now ready for paint  *%*

Good one Matt. What kind of game, board you planning on putting in? Also are putting any graphics on it?

I'm planning on installing an ArcadeSD board, they have been out for a year or so, and were made by some guys who are well regarded in the arcade world, they recreate the games as faithfully as possible to the originals and update the board every three months, updating is as easy as installing the update with the ROMs which are inserted into the board via an SD card.  They apparently are far superior to the Chinese 60-in-1 boards, no lag, correct sounds and the ability to save hi-scores etc.
http://www.phoenixarcade.com/ArcadeSD.htm (http://www.phoenixarcade.com/ArcadeSD.htm)

I am going to paint the cab black, use woodgrain vinyl on the top and wings, with only minimal graphics, just a Hankin logo and price card.

Looks great and will be worth all the effort once you have your first game on it. Any chance of a copy of the plans? I've built an up right cab and would like to tackle a cocktail next.

Sure, here they are, I did not draw these up, the writing in the black is the correct dimensions
My friend with the router is also a guru on CAD and drew up the wings and top, I'll try to find those drawings and post them as a PDF

Looking good Matt can't beat the original Hankin design the sure got it right

They definitely have a bit more leg room and the controls at a better angle, the only thing I will change, is to offset the joystick to the left a bit, having the joystick directly in the middle of the control panel feels a bit uncomfortable to me as you sort of have to angle yourself around a little instead of sitting straight on to the machine

Nice work Matt, and another great tribute to your mate.

I had one of these originals years ago, wish I'd hung onto it.

I would love an original but I could never justify buying one as I am far more passionate about pinball. So when I was given most of the material I got motivated to create a copy. I was also given a large upright machine that I may one day convert to MAME but it is in pretty bad condition and will take a lot of work. I'll see how much use this gets before I get too serious about the upright

The correct dimensions are the black ones, if it says YES the black dimension is correct.
I will get the cad drawings uploaded when I get a chance

I decided to make my own glass holders as the ones you can buy are too wide and need to be bent in to hold the glass, plus I thought they would look better in stainless.
Took me almost a day to make 4  @.@
But was definitely worth it

I've never been big on the arcade games either. I can remember playing a little when I was a kid but I was not a good player so didn't tend to put my pocket money into them.  I remember wasting a bit of money in double dragon when I was a teenager though and plenty on Daytona. I have an upright cab that I will make a two player MAME one day to play the fighting games etc.

Awesome job, would you have the measurements of the control panels ? once again Awesome $%$

For the control panels I assembled the "wings" then used a piece of cardboard against the angle of the cabinet and traced around the wing to give the profile I had to work inside.
I just drew the control panels profile inside that and after cutting the steel plate to length i folded it up to suit.

I just got the control panels I bent up back from powder coating today, textured black sure is the way to go. I couldnt be happier with the finish, they look a treat. for anyone else wanting to make these. Dont waste your time with standard steel hole saws at $35 a pop spend $100 at hafco and get a set of carbide tipped hole saws. It saved me a lot of time and no broken teeth on the hole cutting.

I used a handheld hydraulic punch for the holes, the electricians at work had one for working on electrical cabinets. Would be a very handy tool if you were mass producing panels.

Thanks Mike, total cost including 6mm hardened glass is under $600. Bear in mind I have made panels legs etc all at home. There are a few hours in this project which I havnt bothered to work out a cost for as there is no need to. I also didn't spend as much as Matt on the game board, as I have used the cheaper ones before on a sited machine with no problems.

That would be great to own Matt, but Im guessing the hole saws were more within my budget. ^^^

Any reason you mounted the screen in the horizontal plane? most the old classic games are vertical.

#@# I was wondering if any one would notice.  Im puting a 138in1 board in this one. my little helper loves the the game wonder boy. Ill post some pics. of the 60in1. Cabinet later.. Also my cost per machine has come down a bit due to receiving my invoice for the glass.

Cool does the card with wonder boy support cocktail mode in the horizontal setting?

Yes Matt that card has an upright and cocktail mode dipswitch. It is a dedicated horizontal game board. Im pretty sure you can get the 60in1 as a horizontal as well, but last time I Looked it was a fair bit dearer than the standard vertical board.

Actually Matt, Wait untill I hook the board up as I believe there are about 19 games that are not supported by flip screen. Im not sure which ones.

Ok guys. first off a big thanks to Matt for all the help throughout the build. Ive finally finished my 2 clones the black one with 60 games for my son and the woodgrain one with 138 games for my daughter. lots of quality time spent with both of the kids during the build makes it all worth it.. Here are the final pics. 2 100 nm gas struts hold the lids up fine without the monitors attatched to them. I hope more of you guys take on the challenge.
