Do not peel flaps back until the official opening as you all need to experience the new machine smell.

Congratulations, bet you are itching to fire it up.

Congrats Daniel, enjoy the unboxing and the game.

Have played the pro for over 3 hours at Timezone, Gold Coast over the last week and think it is a great game. With the extra features the LE should be very special imo.

Just want to highlight the class that Daniel has in spades - He has a NIB in his mancave and won't open it until he keeps his word so others can share the moment. I know it is a useful bench at the moment, but the fact remains - What a credit to the hobby you are mate.

So unboxing etiquette question: Do you open the box whilst completely sober and remember every little bit of it, or, have a few warm-uppers to heighten the anticipation? If the latter, what is an acceptable amount to have? The titration level must be precise to avoid getting to the stage where little accidents may occur with cutting cardboard, dropping tools, dropping headboxes etc?

let us know how it goes, and what the blood alchohol level was at each stage - surely Metalica wouldn't want the unboxing to be a total sober experience. #*#

Just got back from Daniel's, great hospitality as always, thanks mate!

Now for the game......

I'm not a big Stern fan, and one of my biggest gripes is the photoshopped "artwork" that has become their mainstay. Pinball until the 2000's was very much a place for pop art, and Stern let this tradition fall to the wayside. Probably as much due to their focus on movie themes I suppose.

Well Metallica turns back the clock and delivers a brilliant art package, absolutely wonderful artwork in my opinion - well done Stern!!  ^^^ Such a difference to AC/DC which is unnecessarily ugly IMO....

As for game play, I definately was not on my game tonight, and with four players games it was hard to get into as much as I would have liked. I might let KTM450 write a bit about it, because he managed some great balls and set some scores that Dan might have to eliminate with a software update..... But my impressions were extremely positive. The game did not seem to suffer with the overly long ball times that I dislike in many Stern games, and played fast and furious (which I **do** like). The lighting effects are terrific, the music is great, overall this game seems a real winner.

At the risk of being labeled a WMS fanboi, I will say (and this is meant as very much a compliment)- this game has a strong WMS feel in a lot of ways - solid fast gameplay, a real blast to play.

Well done Daniel, I think you've got a keeper there mate!!

AC/DC had a similar feel when I played my first few games. It felt like I was playing a Bally / Williams - it felt THAT GOOD. But then again, I LOVE C.S.I. - I think that is a very underrated machine, and it plays nothing like a B/W. Glad to hear the good reports on Stern's latest games.

Well we have called it a night.

Sadly the phone with the video went flat before we could upload it to YouTube hopefully my mate remembers to upload when he plugs it in.

Artwork is fantastic by far the best looking art package in along time.

Game play is far better than ACDC sadly my hammer is stuffed.    When the magnet grabbed the ball and dropped it straight between the flipper (you know what I'm talking about Nick). Was due to the coffin lock malfunctioning.  Works in coil test but not in gameplay.

Also dissapointed that they cheaper out on the shaker motor and no Led flashers.  But we fixed that problem quick smart it now has Led flasher which are way way better.

Oh and I almost forgot I almost doubled Matt's high score  ()

Yours isn't the only one, lots of reports coming out of this happening, software and coincidentally appears to be  more 240v games - reports of Europe machines doing it.

Send stern a message

Thanks Daniel for a great night, I agree with Nick, the artwork is really quite amazing compared with the rubbish photoshoped images Stern have been bringing out lately, some fresh work done by a cool artist with bright eyepopping colours, really nice.  The MoP LE mirrored backglass and side art is very cool too.  Apron and plastics artwork all look fantastic, I like the small touches like the lights mounted in the apron projecting onto the playfield, the clear plastics that are cut into sharp shapes instead of just being a functional square piece, the playfield window looking down into the coffin ball lock using the opto lighting to make it glow an errie red

Shame about the coffin lock playing up, I though it strange that it would hold the ball then drop it SDTM. It worked a couple of times before playing up, and is a great toy.

After changing all the flasher globes to LED flashers made a HUGE difference to the game, when you hit the ramps and red flashers under the M logos really pop! And the flashers in the backboard behind sparky look heaps better when changed to white LEDs.

Gameplay is great, fast and furious the way I like it, the kickouts hurtle the ball at you and you need to be on your toes to control it.
The loop shot is a little disappointing as a up post stops the ball from looping all the way around most of the time, although I think it was changed on the software update.
The inline drops are great and the tombstone multiball has some pretty cool lighting effects. I was actually impressed with all the lighting suits the theme very well.
Sparky is a cool toy, I am unsure if you would get over it after awhile though, as the magnet holds the ball for a LONG time while waiting for the DMD amimation, maybe that has also been changed on the software update.  Not to knock it as it is pretty cool but if you got sparky multiball a few times in a game it would wear thin in the long term IMO.
Fuel mode bonus scoring round is good, hitting the fuel target fills your tank for more time.
Shame about the coffin lock, as we didn't see coffin multiball, but I'm sure that will be sorted in time.
Overall think it is a fantastic looking, fast fun game, I look forward to see what the software updates bring.

Thanks again Daniel for sharing your unboxing with us, it was a great night   ^^^

Borg likes to use pop up posts, as IM has one and the software allows you to turn off so hopefully that option comes along for you.

great to hear positive reports about the machine

Hi KTM

To answer some queries for you...............

The LEFT loop shot that gets stopped by the post is ( IMO ) a pain in the butt on what SHOULD be a SWEET shot.
You can DISABLE the post in the software permanently BUT then you don’t get much pop bumper action – so it’s a conundrum of sorts. The post DOES stay down for both right AND left orbit shots in some modes ( cant recall of the top of my head, I think its in And Justice for All mode and maybe in Gravemarker Multiball – I could have that reversed? ) and when it is down the shots feel excellent.

You should also be aware that you can also hold your left flipper in when plunging and that will keep the post down allowing the plunged ball to come around to the left flipper where a SUPER skill shot is then available at all major shots.
Bear in mind that holding the left flipper down when plunging ball 1 WILL change your song selection back 1 to the left – so bear that in mind when selecting the song and go ONE more song to the right BEFORE holding left flipper when plunging so that you end up playing the song you wanted to ( the song selection affects for ball 1 only and once chosen, your song of choice will be there in balls 2 and 3 and you can hold left flipper in for plunging without affecting the song choice on those balls )

Sparky – get old? – Maybe , maybe not.............the game is such a frantic fast player that I actually enjoy the little ‘break’ that it provides you with.........the physical movement of Sparky is always pretty cool , albeit ( like all things ) the initial thrill / cleverness of it wearing off after a few hundred plays........I was playing and purposely NOT going for Sparky MB so as to make the game a little harder to get big scores on , however since 1.16 with the Snake ADD a BALL feature I am going for Sparky firstly and picking up whatever else I can while in Sparky MB...........this is where I will tell you about the great use of FUEL as well, if you have FUEL prepped and ready to start, hold it right there – THEN get Sparky MB to a point where you need ONE final shot to start him, THEN start FUEL 2 x scoring with the tough dead end shot, hit Sparky and you have 3 x ball /2 x scoring with Jackpots – MASSIVE points in that AND I believe that with the new 1.16 Snake feature you can make this 4X scoring if FUEL is running as well.

Thanks Wotto, good to hear from someone who has had the game for awhile.
Shame Stern didn't add an opto to drop the post for left loops, and just stop the ball on the right loop to allow it through the rollovers into the pops

One thing also last night we notice was the bottom of the snakes mouth is going to cop it alot.
We all thought this is one of the things that will wear out first along with Sparkys feet.
Might be worth buying a couple of spares

The LE sounds great.

Played the pro at Timezone, Gold Coast some more over the last few days and the game is really growing on me. Not into the band at all but there are enough songs to select that I don't mind like Master of Puppets and Enter Sandman. The game is super fast imo and love that the playfield is not cluttered.

I noticed that Sparky's feet are a bit scuffed, so they do cop a hammering. Maybe there will be a mod for rubber sneakers or similar for him.

Timezone has two Metalicca pros, 2 ACDC pros, Avengers pro and X-Men Pro. Looks like X-Men has copped a hammering with the blackbird scoop badly worn (easily prevented with a Cliffy) and the Magneto up posts appear to have snapped. Great to see a site with six of the latest Sterns.

Dreamworld has an ACDC pro with a ticket machine attached. It got played a fair bit when I was there.

Shouldn't matter, as it's a current model and in production.
Surely, AMD and the agent have back up stock.

Had a few games tonight and still love it even without the coffin lock.. (Yes I was pissed off almost $10,000 doesn't even get a working game) but I'm sure it will be sorted out.   Decided I'm not going to play it till its fixed just incase evil Daniel f**ks it up.....

Hey Daniel

A guy on Pinside reported sterns feedback about the error message on shut down in case you are getting that.

Hello ?????

We are looking into the issues we’ve been hearing about with the hammer/magnet/lock assembly and hope to have a solution soon. Please keep an eye on our website for any future updates.

The 50V/20V disabled message you’re seeing when you power off your game is nothing to be alarmed by. The 5V circuit on the L/E machine shuts off a little slower than the 50V and 20V circuits causing the CPU to report the loss of the other voltages.

Regards,
Patrick

I agree Marty, on looks alone Metallica is light years ahead. I have never enjoyed the game play on AC/DC, but immediately appreciated Metallica.

For the pricetag you would expect better quality control and a very quick resolution. Stern have lifted their game quality standards due to the competition, but they are still plagued with QA issues.

This thread alone is an advertisement for Stern's latest game which some of their customer base will judge whether they buy or not. I'd really like to see Daniel's game fixed very quickly, and the QA issues sorted, because the game looks to be an absolute cracker.
Title: Re: METALLICA Master of puppets Limited Edition

I agree.

Metallica appears to have 2 main physical issues - drop targets on all versions and the hammer on LE/ Premiums.

While the drop target issue is a simple fix for most games and not a big deal , the hammer is THE central toy of the more upmarket versions of this machine and something that appears to requires a 'company fix' rather than a home 'hope this will do it' fix and STERN needs to sort it ASAP. At this stage , if I were an LE buyer and awaiting my game I am in 2 minds if I would accept my game delivery before this particular issue got fully resolved, bearing in mind that the warranty will start ticking ( in aspects to all other area's of the game ) once possession is taken. I understand the hammer , being a known issue, would be repaired even after warranty runs out as it is a known issue , however you may have a somewhat unplayable game at home for a month or more until STERN resolve the hammer issue and then once the hammer is fixed find that your machine is very close to its end of warranty JUST when you start to be able to play it a lot  !@#

I hope this gets resolved for all LE owners very quickly as its a massive outlay and a 'bump' at the moment in an otherwise very decent game.

AMD got my game last Tuesday and delivery is at this stage unknown as there fixing all known issues which I'm happy about to be honest :-)
I've heard the hammer issue is due to our voltage like the Europe games.

2 mates own ACDC PRo and I have played the game quite a lot.

2 vastly different games in gameplay.

I truly enjoy ACDC Pro and would ( will ) own one in my set up one day.
I think the music is intergrated much better into ACDC gameplay with the jukebox selections to be honest.
Sound quality is FAR superior in ACDC.
2 areas where ACDC is miles ahead IMO

I'm hoping to purchase a Metallica Pro later in the year (finances pending) and currently own an AC/DC Pro. Since owning it, it's been my favourite machine in my collection (was never a die-hard AC/DC fan either) and one of the best pinball machines I've ever played. I still get the same enjoyment out of it and never tired of it after the first month. The integration of full songs was great and I loved the fast gameplay. Some games were short and frustrating, while others were long and satisfying (yes, still talking about pinball here).

I haven't played any of the Metallica models yet, but letting it all sink in, the Metallica playfield artwork thrashes the AC/DC artwork. I also love the colourful graffiti style cabinet of Metallica Pro/Premium. Before it was released, I was imagining something all black with a lot of silver lettering and live shots of the band. This machine could be the AC/DC killer in my collection. Would I get rid of AC/DC though? Never. These machines will fit nicely with the Data East Guns n Roses. I'm looking forward to having my favourite Metallica tracks while I play a killer pinball machine.

Wow, sound quality is superior in AC/DC, Wotto? Cheaper speakers in Metallica?

Cheers!
Adam.

I know both the WA and NSW distributors are holding onto their allocated games before delivering them until a solution is found. Stern is aware of the problem and are working on it.

Hopefully a solution isn't too far away.

played a sited LE today No:221

very nice looking machine, hammer lock wasn't working during game play except when you hit the ramps multiple times the hammer would just slam down for no reason  !@# !@# !@#

the cross would go up and down at the game end and start, but during game play - hit it multiple times and would not rise even after getting the multiball.

this machine had a shaker and mirror blades and very nice - definitely recommend both.

Got my metpro on Tuesday off AMD and have to say very impressive. the 1.16 code still has a few issues but its a fantastic machine. If i had the choice and money wasnt a factor of course i'd choose the le or premium but i cant see the 2k value difference in this met lineup with the pro and le side by side. i got sub, mirrors, and leds added and much happier that ive spent the cash on those extras.
Completely different from the acdc pro/prem machines. after playing both i wouldnt hesitate buying a premium acdc over the pro. That said i love the acdc premium and its on my xmas list but for this line up imho the met pro is leaps and bounds better value than the acdc pro. just my opinion of course.
Posting pics soon of the pimped pro. have led speaker insert on the way.

also have to say all dealings with amd have been excellent and the added mods all perfect.

sorry to be a party pooper but I'm hearing a lot about the coding not ready on all these new games. Why? In the good old days of games in arcades, were they this unfinished? I wouldn't think so but could be wrong. I thought games that weren't quite finished in those days were those that were field tested? I played WOZ at bumper that apparently had about 30% of the final coding and I thought why bother. Any way if someone could put me in my place and tell me this is standard practice, please do.

By the way I am one of the best QC testers around. I can find a bug without any problems. Maybe Stern can give me a job?
Title: Re: METALLICA Master of puppets Limited Edition

I think it was more the case that there were unknown issues with the coding that came to light once the machines were being played in countries with 50hz power.  Stern have fixed the code and by all reports, the bug has been fixed within the week.  To their credit, AMD refused to release their machines until the issue was sorted so as to avoid any potential damage to the machines and keep all warranties intact.  Some other re-sellers weren't as thorough as AMD and released machines basically untested and put those machines at potential risk.

Yep, Stern has been sending out games with unfinished code for years now
with Batman TDK, they were still updating two years on, we were lucky
WoF had no updates and feels unfinished

in the old days, updating the software meant burning a new ROM, now it is a simple matter of downloading the software, transferring it to a USB stick and putting the USB stick in your game and waiting a few minutes

I had the pleasure to not only put some very enjoyable games on Mr Gorgar's LE Metallica but also witnessed my first unboxing.  The machine looked bloody fantastic in the flesh, Stern have got the artwork on this machine oh so right!!  Game play is great as well.  Overall package....I WANT ONE.

Thanks Peter for a great weekend.

Just installed my topper.
It does look a tad too big but I don't care.
I think it looks great, especially with the stage lights on.

Awesome!

Has anyone noticed that these sets have gone up in price since the release of the Metallica pinball? It used to be $250 on eBay for the past 3 months and now it's $350.

I only paid $150 for mine a couple of weeks ago.
You can find them cheaper if you look hard enough.
I spend way too much time online.  :)
