Title: What coin Opp items do you collect other than pinball?
Post by: guyricho on April 11, 2014, 04:47:15 PM
I was wondering what coin operated items people here collect?

Possibly penny arcade items or that sort of thing

I have spent a good part of my youth and even now at arcades, I am guessing I am not the only one here.
Coin opp has always interested me but is there a resurgence in Vintage coin Operated items recently?

I would love to see pictures of the unique items you may have collected.

that's cool

Are you finding more people collecting this older stuff or is it a limited few? and are prices for these things increasing with rarity?

Mostly pinball except for an old 10c poker machine, and a 200 in 1 cocktail mame arcade cab. It has coin mechs but its set for freeplay (i have no idea how to change it to coinplay, not that i really want to change it).

Are you talking sort of sit-downs and so on? im actually thinking about collecting really early mechanical types.

I have access to some from a friend and wondering how strong this sort of a community is with collecting that sort of thing

at the same time i do want to hear what other coin opp items people collect modern or vintage. would love to see pictures of what people have

this is a fascinating subject for me

Im like Daniel.. collect anything and everything that's coin operated.. the older and funkier the better. Have a few old gum machines from 1939 and a STONER GUM which I managed to post over from USA just before it got too expensive to even send a stamp from there.. an upright pinball from 1951 that came from Steve Kordek's basement collection.. a few Flip Ball games, gun games.. bowlers etc. My favourite non pinball machine has to be the 1950's peep show machine.. she works apart from the sound ( not easy finding authentic 16mm peep booth films with sound!).. im still working on the amp for this. But you can watch dirty films OK.. my son often drops a coin in..LOL.

Heres one of the "ladies"

Heres the machine and on the left is the upright pinball

Its a trigger finger killer that's for sure, when i am serious ill play with one gun but when i want to mix it up ill "john woo" it and play it with both guns at the same time.

there wouldnt be many peep shows around these days you wouldnt think so thats a rare one.

If it takes standard 16mm film I actually know a bloke who has some filthy 16mm porn's and apparently there is a allot of people who actually collect 16mm porn and its pretty pricy to buy a full length porn film.
im not sure why but allot of porn seemed to be on 16mm not 8mm like most other movies for home use were.

so you should be able to find some new clips for it if your son gets bored with the same reel over and over again  %.%

for the amp can you steel some parts from a 16mm projector? they get their sound from a magnetic strip from the side of the film so that strip needs to be good or the reader needs to be good, i have messed around with projectors a few times and some times getting that sound and image to lineup is a pain in the arse.

LOL- I have a guy in US who does private auctions for old peeps how stuff, also included is quite a lot of hardcore from 1920's through to 70's.. this isn't what im after.. its a peep show and so should just not quite satisfy. Films I buy are more the burlesque, non nudity type. Theres a thread on the peep show somewhere.. ill dig it out. Its been a journey to get the projector working.. trying to figure out how a continuous loop works and the final step is getting the sound to work.. im almost there, but I have a modified amp and no circuits to work from.. is all good.. its part of the fun!..BTW - my son is 5.. heres a pic of him getting treated for nits having found a 10c piece and put it through the machine..

I love anything coin op, i have mainly pinball machines, But also the pictured machines from the early 80's , One is a grip tester the other one you place your hand on the machine and it reads your stress level. Other machine is a Taito Super Road 7 from Japan 1970. game now has the original woodgrain steering wheel as pictured in the flyer . One other coin op machine i own is my Aristocrat Poker machine from 1961 .

Saw an old weigh scale on an American show the other day. You step on and put in what you think you weigh. When you put in a quarter, the scale weighs you and if your guess was correct, you get your quarter back. Would be good to own one.

those old gambling trade stimulators were bloody clever devices, they had so many ideas with the result of winning a coin or two, cigar or beer.
It always amazes me how inventive they were to hide them as something like a gumball machine that is really a slot machine and in this case a scale . so they even had scales that paid out  %.%

When I was a young lad I used to go an stay at my great Aunts house. They didn't have a television set so she used to hire one for me to watch when I came over. You had to put 10p into the slot and turn the handle to fire it up, once done I could watch great shows like The Persuaders, Catweazle etc.
Ive been after a  coin op TV or about 20 years now..

The thing is so tiny, the operator would need to visit to empty/fill machine often. Where do cigarettes come out from? Nice novelty and looks like build quality is good.

Virtually these gambling trade stimulators were around when gambling wasnt legal or in other states of America where gambling was heavily taxed so these were to  avoid gambling taxes in those states

These machines were illigal gambling machines that passed them selves off as gum ball machines or amusement only machines.

They were often small so bars or drug stores could move them easy if the police came looking.
some of them would have been in illegal bars during prohibition times.
The fake radio dial shown covers the slot part of the machine which was the iligal part in most states of America.
a police officer may have thought at first glance it was a art deco style radio when coming in for his coffee or donut

It didnt dispense the cigars or packs of smokes, the shop owner would have to give the winner the pack of cigs or cigars.
it only dispensed the gumball to hide its true use which was an illegal slot machine.

some of these makers of these gambling machines eventually went on to become pinball machines manufacturers  %.%
some one puts the coin in

some states of the America still have these as illegal items if operational,
however most states allow them under vintage slot machines for collectors.

There were more sinister mini slot machines of this type
one was a mills vest pocket slot machine.
These were very popular with the mafia in the 30 and 40's.
They about the size of that machine above but it payed out cash also just like a full size slot machine.
It would have been jail time if you were caught with one of those so they were small enough that they could be moved on a police raid on a gambling house or bar.
They are very popular with collectors now because of the history

Many trade simulator machines were given free advertising in trade mags like BILLBOARD.. theres a murky cross over between Stimulating trade and illegal gambling.. everything was encouraged and yet everything was also illegal to some extent.
We have a somewhat murky past here in Australia too. Pokie machines were illegal till sometime mid to late 50's ( 56 if I remember correct.. cant be arsed to Wikipedia it right now..lol), that doesn't mean that they didn't exist.. they did and quite extensively. By time they were made legal in NSW ( first place to legalise), Nutt & Muddle had a massive factory making them.. they had moved some years previously to bigger premises to increase production!
My own peep show machine is Australian made but as I dug deep into its manufacture I came up with dead ends everywhere.
The projector is made by " Tom Thumb".. a company that never existed. When I was enquiring about spare parts I was pissing a few of the film projection enthusiasts off as I kept telling them that its made by Tom Thumb and they kept telling me it couldn't be as the company never existed.
On the front is a patent plaque.. when you go to the US patent office and type in the number you come up with an obscure hay bailing machine from 1896. The address on the plaque is in NSW.. Rushcutters Place. Look up this address and no building existed on the corner named until much later.. but just up the road is the Nutt & Muddle factory..LOL

All cloak and daggers.. and all designed to attract customers but to never be prosecuted by the police.. Ha ha! Often the history is better than the machine..

A good friend of mine who I bought the little slot machine off has one of these little badboys.

this was also a trade stimulator but I believe it is a skill type? from what i have researched abut trades stimulators
they had a few classes for trade stimulator
gambling which is the type I showed before and then skill types like this game below

Any ways the idea of this game is you have some ducks in the back and you put a penny in the gun and you shoot the penny at the duck, if you hit the duck you get a gumball and your penny back if you miss you only get a gumball and you loose your penny.

How does the us marshal work? it obviously doesnt use the coin as the bullet to shoot at the targets.
Ive looked at other shooting galleries where they shoot a ball under the gun that not actually from the gun but because it is from under the gun it looks like it comes from it.

Is that what that game does?
Or is it a bit like one of those old Em style upright shooting galleries where it doesn't actually shoot anything but works on levers attached to the gun and lining up to simulate it aiming and shooting?

the great things about these old mechanical machines is they are so ingenious on how they work they make computers look stupid.

Us marshals shoot little ball bearing from out of the gun at little targets that pop up in the door and windows of the saloon its very clever no power its purely mechanical.   I put a video on you tube once search for ddstoys on you tube and you should find it

I have only seen the ones where it shoots from under the gun and shoots along a playfield at the target or the ones that dont actually shoot anything but looks like it does.
It would have to be a very clever loading system to catch the balls then return it back up the to the gun with no power.
How does it do that?  ^&^ I love that

I was just looking at his selection of stuff on his website and it is fantastic what they reproduce their in America for that restoration market and hobby.

Thank you again for your advice Dan i will be buying that decal i am looking at, he even has tobacco themed reels that would suit my machine but im certain my originals are good enough.

Well some one here maybe interested but im posting on behalf of a friend of mine who is selling a trade stimulator slot machine.
It is a very nice example
I bought one off him unrestored and I plan on restoring mine to this level.

If any one is interested in a very rare hard to find cigar/gumball trade stimulator feel free to Pm me an ill pass on his details.
It takes American 1cents and works like any slot machine and ive included a picture of the insides

The brand is IMP. Bally at one point was making IMP trade stimulators as well as other companies depending on the year of manufacture.
This one is dated around the time Bally was making IMP so it could very well be a bally IMP.

Another interesting fact
If you have ever heard the saying "close but no cigar"
well that saying originated from people using these machines when they might have got two out of the three wheels alined and didnt win the cigar.
so close but no cigar.

do you have the original dice for this game? the original dice are worth a fortune
if you have them that is a great item.

Thats a 1934 Horse shoe, or a Select em by exhibit supply

I actually know some one who has a spare NOS top with decals for that game, dice and the little anti cheat ball that sits in the small circle.

The mechs can be bought from crow river but they dont sell the top cover if you dont have that
Title: Re: What coin Opp items do you collect other than pinball?
Post by: faza on June 11, 2014, 06:17:47 PM
I think it is a select em due to the red paint on the machine though I could be wrong.
No I don't have the original dice and the rear door is missing.
I have contacted a guy in the USA that reproduces the artwork including the instruction cards.

that is good,

The colour on the machine wont dictate which one it is.

both select em and Horse shoe have the same case and the colour was just an option

the style is very clear that shows it is an exhibit supply dice game.

Did you know that there is a little ball that sits in the little small circle so if some one nudges the machine the vendor would count your win as void?

the ball resets its self in the center when you reset the game

It is a very clever anti cheat system

If this is just part of your collection you must have a very interesting one.
can you post some other games you have?

What NOS cover dice and ball does your mate have, you can PM me a price if possible.
My collection isn't very big I have a TAF an old stern magic and a few gum ball machines.
I should recieve a exhibit supply wagon wheels in the next week or so again missing the cover and rear door.
Oh I also have a few one armed bandits.

I was given a playfield and backglass from a Bally 'Variety' Bingo machine .

I believe they were the only things a old operator had kept from his opertating days ,
A  friend managed to get them for me from the operators daughter .
I Framed the B/Glass a while back now but it was time to clean up the playfield and to get some lights going ..(http://)

The original playfield motor and excess wiring was removed from the bottom of the playfield , I just left in the Rollover lamps wires ..

I stripped cleaned, and polished  the playfield up and cleaned the metal work .
Ive left on all the original paperwork and stickers , one i think may be the Bally factory sticker?? , but very fade

I ran the 2 rollover lamps wiring (Red + Yellow/Black) and the common  Blue wire  in to the G I 's , the solid wires that lead to the Playfield G I's
Then soldered on a 6v / 300ma power supply  to one of the Rollover lights on the lower PF
. I have used  warm white retro leds . Bingo!

I outsourced sandblasting and priming of the cabinet, but did the painting and chrome polishing myself, and Ralph67 gave me a huge hand getting the mechanics working. Here's what she's looking like now (90% finished).

I've been chasing one for years and after I sold "Elektra" as fate would have it One came up. So here is my Chicago coin "FUNLAND" rifle shooter.
She had a few minor operational issues but all were an easy fix. I just love the Blacklight glow of the internal artwork & targets plus the recoil action when you shoot.

A great addition to my stable. :)
