Title: Modifying Own Posts
Post by: millsy on April 21, 2014, 12:43:47 AM
If i want to modify a post I have posted, I now only get 2 chances to correct any mistakes then the modify icon disappears.  !@#
Only noticed this in my last 2 posts.
Sure it wasnt like this before.
Or maybe I am making more mistakes than before  @.@

It is a time limit

You have a few minutes to modify your post before it is permanent

The change was made so that if somebody rage-quits, they cannot delete all their posts

I disagree with this change

pretty sure it is 5 minutes, and I agree with pete - I am not a fan of the change but only because I would like to fix my spelling mistakes at times

Yes I like to make sure the post has no mistakes and looks presentable.
Maybe I should be using the Preview option  more often.

It was introduced because some members have in the past gone back and altered their threads to suit their current agenda. One had such a hissy fit that they deleted them all! ..LOL

We had no choice but to introduce this change a couple of years ago. Some members decided to delete all their posts, and this became a nightmare as quoted posts with the deleted posts remained and the rest of the discussion on the thread had no flow, or was difficult to follow.

Nick has found that we can extend the time from 5 minutes to 60 minutes. We are looking at that change now.

Regarding spellchecking, the browser (IE, Firefox or Chrome) can be configured with a spellchecker.

Better to have a forum rule in place that applies equally to all, rather than having it operate in an arbitrary clandestine manner like some forums.

Agreed - that's the aim - we don't always get it right, but we try.

We prefer that what is posted isn't changed down the track. If you need something changed you can always ask Strangeways or me to assist. We have done this for many members from time to time when there has been a valid reason. Some forums (non-pinball) I have been involved in also have post correction limits.

Thanks guys

We have increased the time to 60 minutes which should hopefully allow the spell errors etc to be fixed.

Why not just let the hissy-fitters leave with all their messages too? if they're gonna be like that, then their msg's aren't welcomed either, no matter what kind of informative additions they may have added to the site.

As stated above, this is also the ONLY forum i'm on that has a time limit....people come & go & hissy-fit delete their stuff few'n'far between on my other forums and it's not really a noticable problem.

On another note, besides the fact that we SHOULD all spellcheck etc, i raise another issue.....

For me personally, my old webserver had been cancelled, hence all my linked pictures no longer appear in my technical "how to" posts, so i need to edit the message (years old) to repoint to my new links/pictures, but clearly i can't do this. (this also relates to anyone that moved or deleted their online images or storage account).

The quick solution may be to re-post the topic with pics etc and ask admin to remove the older post (dead links), but then all the replies are lost too....unless admin wanna go thru the joys of topic-merging, which is ugly & time consuming at best.

That is a good point about broken links, but I'm sure the mods would be happy to relink if necessary.
60 mins is plenty of time for fixing mistakes, much better than 5 mins

60 mins now enough time for those who make a big statement and get cold feet 50 mins later
