Title: NEW topic. What would you do ?
Post by: Caveoftreasures on November 23, 2014, 01:09:40 AM
What would you do ?

You have 7 grand cash in your pocket.
Let's say you won it on a scratchie or something, so it's not a loan but your cash.

Would you buy The Walking Dead brand new Stern Pro, brand new in box pinball machine ? OR
Would you buy a totally restored Addams Family or Twilight Zone or any DMD that would command such a very high price, or would you buy 2 x titles at $3500 each ?

A. The Walking Dead
B. Fully restored Addams Family or Twilight Zone or other DMD
C. 2 x $3500 titles and buy the two pins instead

Choice A
Choice B
Choice C

What's your pick ( you have to spend the money on one of the choices, no buying the wife anything. Lol)

Choice C. for me
If you want a new stern its worth waiting a year or 2 for the price drop on a second hand HUO or sited pin and give it a little TLC to bring it up to scratch

Not buy a stern
not buy a B/W DMD

the new guys seem to be making some interesting games
if I had won seven grand, I would take a chance on the new guys and see what I could buy from them

D) None of the above.
Cavey, you should have added a pole. That makes 3 Ds so far.

D: Put it away for my 2016 USA holiday including Expo :)

But if no D is allowed I'd get a CFTBL fully restored the best ever including clear coated PF.

I think the point of the poll is "if" you were gifted $7000 and had to spend it on A), B) or C) - which would you pick.

A) Walking Dead PRO
B) Reconditioned Addams Family or equivalent (Not fully restored - $7000 won't be enough). Scared Stiff would be around the same price in really good condition.
c) Lesser combination of titles - WCS94 AND Fishtales / Striker Extreme AND Playboy etc etc..

I would pick "B" - Easily.

Why ? - And I have not played a Walking Dead - I'm a fan of the show and I love the pinball artwork and theme.

Price. In 5 years time, a Walking Dead Pro will be worth less than an Addams or Scared Stiff. If the price of a Walking Dead LE was $7000, then we have parity. If I wanted to sell an Addams in 5 years time I would have no trouble whatsoever as it is a popular and desirable title. If the market trend continues, I'd make a profit on the resale. Can't say that with a Stern.

I'll get my chance to play a Walking Dead soon. I'd never own one (any Stern) as they are too expensive.

$7K to spend and I don't have to give my wife the same amount to spend on something?

Id be buying TAF or CV for sure...
With TAF or CV.. im guaranteed to get my money back if I needed to resell, games are proven over a few decades.
Would I buy NIB PRO Stern?.. No, I just don't feel that id get value for money..

You have to spend the money on a pin.

You have to spend the money on A B Or C.

A lot of people would love to have 7 grand cash to spend on a new pinny.

The idea is, to see what people would buy pinball wise if they had the 7 grand.

Nino made a good point about resale and fully restored machines .

I would buy the Stern. The Walking Dead.

Still interested in what others would do.

Don't pick D.  Pretend u won another 7 grand and u already have Expo 2026 in the USA covered.
Now buy a pin with the other 7 grand.

Just pick A B or C.

What would you buy ?

Don't be boring guys and think about what's it's worth in 5 years time lol it's bonus money just blow it on whatever you want  $#$ my hard earned I worry about but money for nothing I'd just enjoy  @@*

But yes I'd buy a mnt CFTBL maybe it'll be worth stuff all in five years but hey it was for free so who cares.

Considering resale and the potential of actually making a few $$$ - B for me.  These machines have gone through the depreciation phase and are now appreciating.

I have had a NIB Stern machine and very fresh second hand HUO Stern i.e. 3 months old and I don't know if I would do it again.  I have had my HUO Premium ACDC for sale now at $6800 for a fair while and only get silly offers on it.  It has opened my eyes up to the fact that buying a NIB machine is just like buying a new car, it is going to start losing money the second it comes out of the box.

^^^ The older games would have been the same 20 odd years ago to :) a few have appreciated 20 odd years on but there's a ton of boat anchors to. We will probably never see how the current games hold up in two decades time as pinball will most likely be a thing of the past, the next generation won't give two hoots about pinball.

More than likely but we are in a different era for pinball machines as well.  10 or 15 years ago there were no mods to bling the machines up, techs were very secretive about their tips, tricks and repairs - now we have the internet and things like the old Pinrepair Guides and Pin Wiki and forums to ask advice and learn how to repair things ourselves.  We also have plenty of spare parts at somewhat reasonable prices and repro parts such as all of the ramps that pinball Inc has produced over the years.  All this sort of stuff quickly de-valued a machine in the past when no-one knew how to fix them, parts were not available or were simply too expensive and the machines looked and played like crap.

As long as the manufacturers store the tooling for future use (the die to make the WH2O topper comes to mind), artwork files and the like, most of the machines in a HUO environment should live very long  lives.

I'd take two older games, FT and BSD for example and might even have a few $$$ left. I like most Stern games, but not a fan of TWD as a player or theme. In fact I've never seen the show/ movie.

If I am stuck with these choices, B is out because I prefer restoring myself, A is out because I like the classics more than the new Sterns (despite loving the show, I'll grab one cheap in a few years if it turns out to be a classic), so looks like I'm going to hunt a couple of container A- or B+ games to restore.

Until you run out of room and then it gets hard to pick and choose which ones have to go to make room for new machines.

After the tax man takes his cut, I think I'd have enough to buy a cup of coffee and that's it.

If this is the selection then I'd be looking for a Scared Stiff. There's plenty of DMD pins I'd like but every time I get closer to getting another one, another early 80's Bally pops up and I just can't go past them.

This forum is great because of the variety of views

It wasn't to be controlling, it was to ensure the money was spent on a pinball hypothetically so we can all see what the general consensus would be.
The A B or C choice are all very different to each other ofcourse.
Brand Spanking New in Box
Fully restored Title which may be your dream 1990,s pin OR
2 x machines at a maximum of $3500 each

Blair(pintoxicated) made a good point.
When you are out of room, choice C is a hard one cause you have no or little room.
Therefore a BNIB or fully restored pin is the choice.

If u have room, then C is a easy choice.

So far, B and C are out in front.

We need more members to join in and place their thoughts.

Its just like buying a house:  Would you buy a brand new house for $500k, or a old period home that is a but rundown for $500k?

You can move straight in to the new home, and have no issues for sometime, whereas the old home will need some renovation and require ongoing repairs.

But, in 20 years time, the new house is now an old house, and the old house is still an old house.  Yet the original old house is now worth more than the 'newer' old house.

I'm not trying to cast an opinion here, but people have a strong preference for one or the other, with no in-between.  Only you can decide what YOUR preference is.

...OK, I throw i my view.  I'd take 3 or 4 1970s EM machines.  They look nicer!

I'd buy a TAF. I've wanted one for years and still do so it would be a no brainer for me.

If I were to buy a brand new pin that TBL looks bloody good to me.

 !^!My brother Rob chose B

He wants to buy a Twilight Zone from Nino at Australian Pinball Restorations.

He wants me to buy The Walking Dead.

My brother is the luckiest pinhead in the entire world, bar none.
He gets to play any pinball machine out of my large collection whenever he wants and he has never had to spend a single cent on a pinball in apx 5 or 7 years. Lol

But he wants a Nino Twilight Zone. He says if he has to reach into his own pocket, he wants the absolute best money can buy. Makes sense.

Even tho TAF and TZ might be "cookie cutter" games they are two that I would love to own since they were  2 games that I loved playing when I first really got Into pinball, so I have a soft spot for them.

I would also want ones in tip top condition too as they would be long term keepers so I would pay reasonable dollars to get them.
