Title: "No Body Escapes " The Black Hole , repair and cleanup
Post by: riverinapinball on November 25, 2014, 04:36:44 PM
I acquired a Black Hole in March 2013, after sourcing parts and sitting on it for while on Friday last week, I finally was able to move it from the garage to my home office.
First I would to start with f@$k these machines are heavy!

Repinn ef a missing connector was cut off.

Then I replaced the power supply board, MPU and driver boards with a Pascal board. I didn't want to mess around with original boards as pcb repair is not my strong point. Also my experience with pascal board has be great. I have several in my system 1s.

I removed the lower playfield for ease of access while I work on it.

Replace one coil so far. Large drop target bank cool with fried.
Replace 4 displays with spares I had. No look nice and bright . I would like to thank
Blair for his advice about rejuvenating these display.
Tightened the screw on both bottom transformers as they were loose and buzzing.

Replace a lots of fuses quite a few were blown, a few over sized fuses replaced with correct ones. I did put some 3amp fuses were there was 2.5amp. I have thought about putting 2amp ones..not sure these drive the Pop bumpers individually .

Metered all the coils to check for shorts or open circuits.

Replace 2 pop bumper boards as one missing the other suspicious (blow fuse associated) .

Replace a lot of lamps.

Games is booting up ok, with most lamps on the upper Playford working except 1. I will check the plugs soon

I have new plastics , rubbers, flipper bats, new drop targets, new lower playfield window, yet to install.

Just a few pics, nothing really interesting yet.(http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/11/24/83e6157628f28ab107a0fee017a709d3.jpg)(http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/11/24/567bb3e47d203eb0ae4bc53dd5a4b502.jpg)(http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/11/24/2d32ba52d954932c487291d74d95d13f.jpg)(http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/11/24/0e70d7544730bb14d7130bd78a3a064e.jpg)(http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/11/24/ec2ba857e487914003756b08a3475b29.jpg)

Amazing game. Difficult to work on due to it's weight, but the reward is a fully working machine. I will follow with interest !

I'm looking for an original Black Hole MPU and maybe a driver board if it is in good condition, let me know if you want to sell them.

Thanks.

Good stuff Dan.  I will be keeping an eye on the progress as well.  You cant go wrong with the Pascal boards.  He also has pop bumper boards for the Sys 80 machines if you ever need replacements.

Keep the updates coming.

Watching with interest, particulaly keen on how the Pascal performs as I have original boards in mine but lots of success with those in other games. Worth the extra functions alone.

Pascal boards for me is certainly the way to go. With the addition of test functions, game options , high scores 1 to 5 saved. They have great features.

I got some Pop bumper boards from Mike Homepin.

Pascal boards are brilliant, but it does not support all SYS 80/a/b boards. The new Rottendog does. There's also another great board done by Swemmer Electronics.

I've used a Rottendog in a James Bond and it works flawlessly - and this game was a parts machine brought back from the dead.

Some pics of the playfield before cleaning.
Also someone in their wisdom, has put post or something to block the left capture hole.
Playfield overall looks pretty good.
Under the bumpers is a bit rough as they normally are.

Posts in front of the capture hole is a new one - that's to prevent multiball. Your playfield is pretty good - not as much wear around the pop bumpers.

Why put black rubber on this game  *.* Playfield looks pretty good .

Lucky you have a new plastic set .. as do I.
I must get around to selling my old plastics most of which are in good shape .
Did you source your new ones from PBR ? Are they making low PF plastic set yet ?

Ok, I have put the lower playfield back in. New plastics and drop targets installed.(http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/12/02/56c0e64939362e44bc59aa2a3811187e.jpg)

I couple of problems I have noticed.

2 or 3 voice sounds not working properly.

Gate coil is buzzing a lot. Tried adjusting will no luck. New coil I think

Needs spinner motor replaced. I have one , was going to leave it for last.

Sometimes the bottom playfield up kicker intermittently doesn't kick . Switch?or coil??connector?

I went to replace the lane guards which I ordered ages ago from Marco speciality , blood wrong ones they sent me 1 1/8 not 2 1/8 .

Other than that I can play a game.

All gi is now working. Only one insert not working probably connectors.

Black Hole and Spirit were the only 2 late SS Gottlieb games I played frequently on site when they were released.  BH has the best ever designed lower playfield - genius.
This one is coming up nice and brings back memories.

Looking Good , The new window looks great , Don't forget the globes that light up the Lower Playfield are 24V!! , Use #313 lamps. Mounted around the underside of the  new window.

Yes I know there were 24v lamps on the game took me a while to trace which were which , followed the power cable to the solenoids.

When I finally get around to the restoration of my game, I plan to convert that lower playfield illumination to 6 volt - info here http://www.pinwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Gottlieb_System_80#Replacing_Black_Hole_Lower_Playfield_Illumination_Lamps_with_.2344_Lamps

Pretty simple and effective mod.

Yeh real happy, was a much  easier fix in the end. Very happy. The pascal mpu and swemmer sound/speech board are awesome. The spinner motor is noisier than i had hoped, but is ok.

Bloody hard game, or just my poor pinball skills.
