Title: Stern Price Comparison - Price Watch
Post by: swinks on March 22, 2015, 01:50:52 PM
The recent press release of Stern's game - Whoa Nellie has caused a stir in the pinball community due to the price hike and it got me wondering if we can all post the different game press releases in this thread for all the new and past machines so we have one location to compare price changes to take the guess work out of some of the opinions.

Please include press releases for Pro's, Premium's and LE's,

Month / Year / Game Name / Category / Price (US MSRP)

Note: you would think that the MSRP would not change as almost all the parts are made in the US so these prices should remain consistent at least for a year.

So to start it off:

March / 2015 / Whoa Nellie / Boutique / $6499

January / 2015 / WWE / Pro / $5495
January / 2015 / WWE / LE / $

December / 2014 / The Walking Dead / Premium / $7595
September / 2014 / The Walking Dead / Pro / $5995
September / 2014 / The Walking Dead / LE / $8595

June / 2014 / Iron Man Vault / Pro / $5495

March / 2014 / Mustang / Pro / $5395
March / 2014 / Mustang / Premium / $7495
March / 2014 / Mustang / LE / $8495

December / 2013 / AC/DC Luci Premium / $7495

September / 2013 / Star Trek / Pro / $5385
September / 2013 / Star Trek / Premium / $7495
September / 2013 / Star Trek / LE / $8795

April / 2013 / Metallica / Pro / $4995
April / 2013 / Metallica / Premium / $6995
April / 2013 / Metallica / LE / $7595

November / 2012 / Avengers / Pro / $5699
November / 2012 / Avengers / LE (2 models) / $8099

June / 2012 / X-Men / Pro / $5699
June / 2012 / X-Men / LE (2 models) / $7099

March / 2012 / AC/DC / Pro / $5699
March / 2012 / AC/DC / Premium / $7699
March / 2012 / AC/DC / LE (2 models) / $8499

September / 2011 / Transformer / Pro / $4795
September / 2011 / Transformer / LE (3 models ?) / $6295 ? (need to confirm)

Stern did not advertise MSRP for the below but if anyone knows them please share

Interestingly AMD's prices as of today (22-3-15) is

WWE / Pro / $7850
WWE / LE / $11250

TWD / Pro / $7850
TWD / Premium / $9850
TWD / LE / $11250

Mustang / Pro / $7850
Mustang / Premium / $9850
Mustang / LE / $11250

Star Trek / Pro / $7850
Star Trek / Premium / $9850
Star Trek / LE / SOLD OUT

Metallica / Pro / $7850
Metallica / Premium / SOLD OUT
Metallica / LE / SOLD OUT

I understand that the dollar goes up and down and changes the end customer price for us but why is it that all these games have different MSRP prices which you would think that AMD would pay a set agreed wholesale price based on the MSRP for each pin, but they have bumped the price for all games to suit the latest release games pricing. Look at the difference between a Metallica Pro and a WWE Pro = a potential $500 bonus

instead of discussing the prices of things going up in the Whoa Nellie Release thread I though it would be interesting to state the current and past pricing trend of pins. There was comments in that thread that AMD just charge what they are charged which is speculation just as this is, but I thought this thread is a better place for the discussion. In addition have some clear figures allowing us to look at a more accurate price estimate or a formula of such.

eg - WWE MSRP is $5495 and this equates to $7065 AUD at todays rate and the retail price here is $7850 = about a 11% increase.

of course this is speculation as we do not know what AMD pays but if the US dealers can drop a pin price $500 - $1000 of a MSRP and still make some money, I think AMD are doing ok.

so keeping with that same formula of sorts WNBJM will be $6499 USD = $8360 AUD today x 1.11 = $9280 as an estimate.

If we don't talk prices from time to time and just accept what is given to us we are the ones that loose out, as well as the 2nd hand market as when NIB prices go up so do all the second hand market pins.

As for buying a pin from AMD, when I can afford it, and is a pin I love I will make a fair dinkum enquiry, but since I have never bought a NIB he isn't going to look after me like he can look after you with multiple purchases which I accept..

Also if AMD can have 2 dealers that sell roughly at the same price as AMD and they still earn money, AMD are effectively making more money if you buy direct off them and they can afford to give a discount to the repeat customers.

This is just mere speculation to get people thinking about high high they are willing to go.

So on the WWE your saying AMD make about $800? Out of that they have to bring the container in and look after warranty yeah?  Not alot really.

No.. that is the recommended sale price... NOT the wholesale price that the game is bought at.
It generally goes like this... Stern make a machine and sell at a wholesale price to distributors. They then RECOMMEND that the distributors sell at RRP which is normally a 30% on average mark up. Its then up to the distributors whether they want to sell above or below that RRP.
Depending on the agents business model, they either sell in numbers at a lower price or small at a higher price.
The $800 quoted is above and beyond the % mark up figure.. and as you quite rightly point out, they have shipping costs to consider.
But $800 per machine???

In general terms, it would appear that pinball machines could be sold in Australia cheaper than they currently are and a healthy profit maintained.
What we need is the $$ figure that a Stern distributor can buy at... find that out and you could conclusively state whether the cow is being milked or not.
Problem is that we have had previous threads where Australian customers have bought SINGLE machines from USA distributors and shipped them over individually and STILL come under the AMD sell price.. and that would include the distributor making his profit and shipping the most expensive way... not looking good for the cow!

with all respect why would they bother being in business for just a few hundred a machine.

if stern set a MSRP of what ever value say $6500 and in the US alone a Dealer can drop the price $500 to $1000 (on a $5500 machine) with some including freight = so call it $5500 USD and still make money = meaning US distributors are possibly buying it for around $4000-$5000 hoping to sell a batch of pins fast.

Therefore totally speculation but feasible is the Distributers purchase price is approximately mid way $4500 USD  - so possibly better than $4500 USD for the long term valued distributor like AMD.

So midway at $4500 USD = $5800 AUD and then on-sold to Aus customers for for $7850 = approximately $2050 then less overseas freight, tax and duties = $1500 AUD per machine profit line per machine and possibly more

sell 100 pro's a year and thats just $200k, not counting premiums, le's and all the other machines and services that AMD sell.

There was a discussion a few years ago that AMD still raised the price in line with the USD price rise even though the AUD was better than the USD, a few hundred here and there is ok as it makes up for the bad times where they had to wear some of the loss.

This thread has come about talking about the price hike of the whoa nellie and some stating AMD do not allow a little extra or doing it tough.

My point is there comes a point of the bubble bursting and I believe that is close and just on pinside that is evident with the Whoa Nellie price is just a bit too high for a modern SS (not a dmd) and being rejected by many - and many of those were interested.

^This to both swinks and retropin.  *%*

Just to muddy the price structure waters even more, Stern distros in the US are also subject to what is called MAP (minimum advertised pricing). A nice way of circumventing price fixing legislation.

This is why so many of the medium sized distros sell by way of forums with a caveat of "email me for price". They can do a far better deal without Stern HQ getting wind of it and without a nearby competitor immediately knocking another couple hundred off their advertised price in order to get the sale.

The discount I got on my imported BIBLE was enough to cover shipping costs from the US and then some and still overall came in under AMD retail pricing ex Sydney.

Who said competition was a bad thing? The ones with the market monopoly.

Most big end company's have different price structures for countries.

unless you are in a company that has to trade on a world market due to world resource prices the prices that changes daily.

But for pinball you would have a set contract and price to produce X off at a price ..

maybe i am wrong but i think we are getting screwed in AU

The whole pricing structure issue is less of a mystery for those who have run and owned their own businesses most of their life.
Firstly there is one simple rule in business that has to be understood to understand profit margins and what percentage is or isn't acceptable to a business owner. This margin or percentage is dependant on what you have spent in the first place and it doesn't decrease normally the more money you make.

Let me give you an example. (The following math is just approx and very rough to make it easy and is rounded off give or take a few hundred but you get the rough idea for realistic profit margins I have seen and used all my life).

If as a business owner I buy something for $1,000 (one thousand dollars) you would want to sell it at say $1250 and make a $250 profit or 25 percent.

Let's say I buy something and my cost is $6,000 (six thousand dollars) I am going to realistically sell it again with a 25 percent profit, so I am going to sell the item at $8,000 (eight thousand dollars).

Some people who have never run a business might ask or say, why not just sell it at a ten percent profit instead of a twenty five percent profit and sell more ? It doesn't work like this.
The more you pay out, the more money you risk as a business owner, the more money you WANT back as a profit margin. It gets down to effort versus return.

No one in the electronic security industry makes less than 25 percent. It's 25 percent minimum.
If you spend ten grand, you want your ten grand back plus 2500 on top.
If you spend 20 grand you want your money back plus five grand on top and so on.

There are industry margins for recommended retail for a reason. Profit makes industries keep the turn over going.
If the profit margins are too low, you don't get people buying the products for retail resale. Without retail profits, wholesalers don't exist. Big companies like Stern or jetski companies or luxury retailers want their wholesalers to make a healthy profit because if you can't make a healthy profit selling their product, you reshape your business and sell a different product.
No company wants you as a wholesale buyer to stop buying and then stop retailing their product.
This is why RRPricing is set at a usual 25 to 35 percent.
Drop the price down from Max retail with a 35 percent margin, make a 25 percent margin and the customer gets the discount they want, you still make a healthy profit and the company you buy your stock from keeps building the products.

If AMD isn't making a minimum of 20 to 25 percent profit, they would be insane to even bother importing the product.
If I buy a product for close to six grand landed with all my costs, I would want and require a 2 grand profit.

If anyone on this forum thinks buying a shipping container of say 40 machines which is going to cost you around $240,000, if you didn't get all your money back and make a 20 percent plus profit, you would be financially retarded.
Reward for risk and expenditure is the name of the game.

If you can't make the 20 plus percent on the pinball machine, you are going to stop importing pinballs and start buying and selling something else.
If AMD can't make a decent and worthwhile return on their outlay, then brand new in box pinballs into Australia will become extinct.
AMD deserve every cent profit they make. I couldn't care less if they make a grand, fifteen hundred or twenty five hundred off a pinball. That is their business.

All I care about is that the end price of the pinball machine still represents value for money to me.
The Pro is roughly $7800. Negotiating delivery and a shaker motor etc, still gives ME a price I am comfortable with.
This is a very personal choice.

I know some people who would not buy a BNIB machine even if it were only 4 grand.
Some people think buying a over rated late 1990,s Bally Williams for ten plus grand is value for money.
Some people think anything more than 2 grand for any pinball is a rip off. It's all personal.

I think the Australian dollar is 90 percent of the blame reallistically for BNIB pricing complaints.
We had the Aussie dollar too good for too long, then it sank quickly like the Titanic.

I have always loved Sterns Pro model. I have always thought and still do think they are excellent value for money.
I say this because I have played hundreds of DMD titles and have over 50 DMD machines in my collection to compare to.

The price of everything today is expensive.
Us Aussies are used to inexpensive white goods and new Televisions at great prices because of our proximity to Asia.
But us Aussies don't like paying too much for our other luxury items regardless of our incomes.
That's our unique Aussie way I guess.

The great thing about a BNIB pinball machine is that in a home environment it will last forever, unlike a brand new car we also pay a lot of money for but is worth nothing after 5 years.

The current prices of pinballs aren't the cheapest they have ever been I will grant that, but the Aussie dollar is the issue, not AMD over charging in my opinion.

Things could be worse, we could have no Stern importer.
I am grateful we do have AMD.
Making money in today's world is not easy.

AMD need to make a reasonable profit otherwise it ain't worth importing the machines.
Profit should not be a dirty word.
To a business owner, going broke is a much dirtier set of words.
Trading dollars for dollars and making fark all is just as bad.
You have to make a decent percentage to pay all the running costs.
Otherwise, why get out of bed ?

You would think with the long list of new pinball companies, Stern would cut their prices to make it harder for the competition.  It's what the supermarkets do to smaller operators.  Drop prices to drive out the small guys, then once they are gone, up go the prices again.

...With current pinball prices, you would think that the opportunity is right for someone to setup a factory in a China %$%, release their first few machines at competitive prices until their set up costs are recovered and the factory is up to full speed.  Then slowly lower their prices while increasing their production.  Then you will see the hurt for all US and Eurpoean operators.

Stern USA and Whizbang will need to take a close look at their pricing and determine with probable feedback which is the best way to proceed.
AMD is caught in the middle. They need to make a dollar and the price they are paying Stern may well be higher per unit because they obviously are not buying this title in bulk ?

What do people think is a realistic or reasonable price foe Whoa Mellie.
Because I haven't seen detailed photos and a gameplay video, I would have said $7850 like a Stern Pro. That's my initial thought.
It may go back down or up slightly once I see the Whoa Nellie in person.

Taking seriousness aside, MEN have been known to pay big money for anything female with a great large beautiful set of tits ! Lol

Maybe the boobies have gone to the frontal lobes of the bean counters at Sterns pricing Department. Lol

you would think that would be the case but with boutique pinball the design costs may not be as high, their hours much longer, their shed rental lower but the crunch comes down to buying  / purchasing costs per unit are higher which bumps the price up.

I have been watching this for a while and strongly believe that JJP stepped it up by approaching building pins and setting a price to reflect their higher quality product and getting sales as that is what alot in the market want (new technology and higher quality). Then I believe Stern probably thought crap JJP are selling a crap load of pins at a higher price - why don't we rise our price to cash in on the available sales and in came all the premium and le options and there starts the vicious circle of pin prices radically going up in price and then companies like Dutch Pinball & Heighway coming in with a high end pin prices and granted some of these maybe granted but Stern are enjoying the higher prices.

With the last few years of higher prices, 2nd hand pins have risen alot and am sure people are running out of money for a fancy but simple toy in the corner.

As for the value of The Whoa Nellie, since it has no ramps, dmd programming, playfield toys maybe $7000 AUD would help a heap of sales, whats the point of being too high even for the US market and you go to all the effort of manufacture setup and lucky to make a few hundred sales, may as well be competitive and make people think they are getting a bargain and get a heap of sales.

Not sure about Stern coming in later with the LE premium price to follow JJPs higher quality price. The Stern model must have been there earlier than JJPs.
I remember playing my NIB BIBLE more than 12 months before guys were still asking “when is WOZ coming to OZ”.

Stern introduced Premium Limited Editions after JJP started up.  I know that well, as JJP started up just as I got into pinball (I thought it died in the 70s, and I squandered the 90s pinball scene by being focused on work!).

JJP announced they were going to do a WOZ just prior to Tron being released, and perhaps even prior to Rolling Stones.  Upto that point, Stern had LEs but they were only eye candy improvements to a standard edition.  JJP triggered Stern to up spec and up cost their LE playfields, starting with Transformers LE.   They later introduced Premium with ACDC's release.

I understand, but my point is that Stern released (for example) AC/DC in April 2012. JJPs first pin WOZ was released March 2013. Stern could not have said "jees JJP is selling squillions of WOZ machines so we better put out LEs and Pros of AC/DC and capitalise with a higher price".
Title: Re: Stern Price Comparison - Price Watch

found this which I think supports the theory

"Then there's the small matter of competition in the pinball market.  Stern's claim to be "The only maker of REAL pinball games on the planet" is about to be negated by Jersey Jack Pinball - a company making full-featured games to counter Stern's back-to-basics approach.  Jersey Jack Pinball (JJP) is appealing to the serious collectors who want more in their games than Stern has been offering of late and are prepared to pay accordingly.

Tron is Stern's first move towards the ground JJP is occupying - adding a little extra hardware and producing a premium version with more hardware and additional rules.  Plus, of course, a higher price tag, taking it every closer to the price point for JJP's The Wizard of Oz."

Remember that JJP sold their 1,000 LEs very quickly, on the promise of 'the best game ever made'. I'd say that is what triggered Stern.

Not long prior to that, Stern released a home version of Ironman that Stern couldn't sell.  It was a cut down of the standard edition at a reduced price.  Gary later stated that in regard to Ironman home edition, they got the home market wrong.  JJP helped showed Stern that the home market was prepared to pay a lot more for a better featured game.  It was the operator market that was more price sensitive.

here is a good overview of JJP

http://www.pingamejournal.com/jerseyjack/

here is the initial set price:

- deposits taken before 1st March 2011 for the standard were set at $6500 USD
- deposits after 1st March 2011 were $7500 USD
- and pretty sure the le's to follow were $8500 USD

this coincides with the AC/DC pricing jumping up on release as the start of WOZ production

then Nov 2013 a new LE is announced at $9000

Realistic price for Nellie would be in the $4K range. Remember that the manual ball lift was dropped ( saving $$'s) and electronic chimes incorporated instead of real ones ( again saving $$$'s). Sterns new SPIKE system is an integrated board which once again would save some $$'s
Having read on Pinside what Dennis Nordman and Greg Freres have to say, the spiel is that the manual lift would scare DMD players away and electronic chimes so operators can turn down the sound.
Sounds like a lot of hot air to me because the price tag alone will mean that hardly any will be sited and although trying to not be too cynical, the scaling back coupled with the high price suggests a price gouge.
There is of course a basic price to manufacture ANY pinball.. even if it had one flipper and 1 bumper, it would still have a minimum price to produce. The extras that come after that are pennies that add up. Problem here is that there aren't really any extras apart from the score reels. These are controlled by stepping motors which is EXACTLY how Retro Pinball did it with KOD which can still be bought for UNDER $4K.

And to keep the prices updated:

May 2015 / Kiss / Pro / $5995 USD
May 2015 / Kiss / Premium / $7595 USD
May 2015 / Kiss / LE / $8795 USD

$1 USD = $0.81 AUD
x 1.24 for rough Aussie price.

AMD Web Prices are:
May 2015 / Kiss / Pro / $7950 USD
May 2015 / Kiss / Premium / $9950 USD
May 2015 / Kiss / LE / sold out

maybe someone can state what the Aussie price of the LE for historical sake.

Interesting that all the machines went up between $0 - $500 USD since the WWE pin / TWD pin, Stern moved into a new factory, the system is running on spike which is cheaper. Kiss is a cool looking game but apart from the moulded head can't see too much extra in machine manufacturing cost though I dare say the licence would of been a little dearer and Stern probably know that they will sell a heap. At least AMD only bumped their price $100 since the last game release.

But with the license you would think the licence cost would be fairly equal across all 3 models.

Interestingly the US MRRP went up inconsistently:
Kiss Pro versus WWE Pro - $500
Kiss Premium versus TWD Premium - $0
Kiss LE versus WWE LE - $200

Prices go up but the games stay the same.
Sounds like price gouging to me.

I remember this. Stern called it the super LE.

Our dollar was at one stage $1.17 USA, then down to 71 cents, now back to 81 cents last night.

The dollar has been a mess and makes it hard to put everything into a real context price wise.

if you ever want to compare, this is one of a few good ones to view historical USD / AUD rates
http://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?from=AUD&to=USD&view=1M

that aside Stern's pricing is inconsistent this time round when compared to the model structure of older released machines....

Premium didn't change and LE up $200 so sounds like it is close to the max price point but since it is Kiss looks like they are milking the Pro market which was supposed to be for the Arcade owners to promote pinball going up $500.....

It reached $1.10 ish for a week or so - twice. But never stayed there.

Sneaky Price rise overnight ?

GAME OF THRONES PRO PINBALL - $8150.00
GAME OF THRONES PREMIUM PINBALL - $10,650.00
GAME OF THRONES LIMITED EDITION PINBALL - $12,350.00

KISS PREMIUM PINBALL - $10,650.00 - Well done Stern ! APR Customers that waited for Premium have pulled out. One still left "on the fence" - but this is bad business..

Quick, let's blame the $AUS - Nope - it went UP by almost  by :2cents:

Well I love my KISS LE, but it is definitely my last Stern NIB.

wow, but then not surprised, wait to see what price rises will be in Feb with the rumoured Ghost Busters with a lcd / colour dmd and second playfield

I suppose it is Friday the 13th (Nov.)

Also interesting that all machines across the board went up the same amount. Surely there was some stock that would remain at the lesser prices.

It is good to see how the prices go over time.

Shame of it is I am currently looking for an AC/DC Luci and I don't think I will get it for the price that would have been great (for the seller) 8 months ago!

Over here in Perth it is really hard to find a decent second hand machine at a reasonable price and has been this way for about 2 years.
Buying a NIB which is fairly reliable isn't that big a decision, compared to buying a $5k+ boat anchor which is 20+ years old. Crazy hobby huh?

These price rises move prospective buyers away from the overpriced Stern's and back to restored machines. Good for industry people like me, but not good if you have years of restoration work ahead.

There are still bargains to be had with BNIB Sterns if you haggle and phone around.
The current Pro versions to me are still excellent value for money.
We had it pretty good for a long time with the great Aussie dollar until it tanked.

I still play all my NIB Sterns often & am glad I bought them.
I haven't once wished I could go back and change the purchase.

Hoping to buy more in the future. The modern Sterns make a lot of the older games just seem old with some of the technology but the best collection is a diverse collection.

Always looking forward to the next release. Pinball is still a lot of fun from that perspective.

Drop an email to some of the US distros if you want to wheel and deal.
They will be able to give you a much better price than the local monopoly we have here (i.e. something a bit more substantial than $50 off a shaker motor).

Even though our dollar has dropped back to where it has always been historically, you can still get a good deal from them as the US guys actually have to compete with each other to get a sale and are far more flexible in this regard to the domestic.

I wouldn't bother to go this route with Pro models though, unless you were siting the Pro for the purposes of running them into the ground and then writing them off at the end of their useful life (6-12 months tops). History has shown that their values drop like a lead balloon in comparison to the LE/Premium range. Plus the pinball playing public perception is that are easily categorised as only 75% of a machine anyway.

Have to admit though that in 2015 there really is nothing to compare in seeing dots in two shades of pure orange. If only I could take a photo of it on my Nokia 3210.

Released 13-7-16, but no prices are where to get it from

ELK GROVE VILLAGE, IL – July 13, 2016 – The Pabst Brewing Company, makers of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer (“PBR”), today proudly announced the debut of its new PBR- Themed “Can Crusher” pinball machine. The new PBR machine will make its debut at Comic-Con International in San Diego on July 21st through July 24th at booth 501. The game was developed in partnership with Stern Pinball, Inc., the world's oldest and largest producer of arcade-quality pinball machines

The “Can Crusher” pinball machine captures the iconic nature of the PBR brand with a retro game design, dynamic eye-popping art by artist and pinball phenomenon Dirty Donny and music by hard-hitting heavy metal band Red Fang.

The debut of this machine will not stop with its arrival at Comic-Con. Following Comic- Con, PBR will showcase the exclusive machine at several other venues including concerts, barcades, high profile events, and other community activities.

“To partner with Stern Pinball on the ‘Can Crusher’ and have a superstar artist like Dirty Donny and music from Red Fang was exactly what we set out to do when we wanted to make a pinball machine the PBR way. The game does a great job of capturing the essence of our brand,” said Pabst CMO Dan McHugh.

Holy Golden Anniversary, Iconic Batman TV Show Turns 50!
ELK GROVE VILLAGE, IL – September 15, 2016 – Stern Pinball, Inc., the world's oldest and largest producer of arcade-quality pinball machines, proudly announced today the availability of its highly anticipated Batman ‘66 Anniversary Edition pinball machine.
Stern Pinball is celebrating its 30th year in business and the 50th anniversary of the iconic American TV series with an Anniversary Edition pinball machine featuring the world famous “Dynamic Duo” of Batman and Robin. The game will immerse players in campy fun and heart-pounding action as the crime fighting Dynamic Duo comes to the aid of the Gotham City Police. Throughout the game, Batman and Robin work to deduce clues and discover super villain plots in an effort to thwart evil plans and capture bad guys. Players are guided through the game by the voices of none other than the original Batman and Robin, Adam West and Burt Ward.
A Hall of Fame pinball development team created the all new Anniversary Edition machine. The project was inspired by Joe Kaminkow of Ka-Pow Pinball and spearheaded by Stern Pinball product development chief, George Gomez, who, along with renowned programmer, Lyman Sheats, brought the game to life.
In addition to the fun title and game experience, the machine features a full color high definition display replacing the dot matrix display. In conjunction with Stern’s new SPIKE-2 electronic pinball platform, the display enables high definition graphics and innovative animations. This enables the game to feature actual TV footage from the iconic series. The game includes a second high definition display on the playfield as part of an interactive game feature.
"We are very proud to celebrate our 30th year in business by making a 50th anniversary Batman ‘66 game in collaboration with our good friend, Joe Kaminkow. Joe, who was instrumental in starting Stern Pinball 30 years ago and served as our company’s very first game designer, is now one of the gaming industry’s leaders,” said Gary Stern, Chairman and CEO of Stern Pinball, Inc.
Pricing and Availability:
The Batman ‘66 Anniversary Edition pinball machine will be available in Premium, Limited Edition, and Super Limited Edition models. The company has no current plans to produce a Pro model.

Premium is the new entry level, and to buy an entry level Stern pinball it will cost $11,500 at current exchange rates + shipping.

I hope the next model does have the Pro as an option. I can't see many sales at $12-$13K for a new machine.

All reports are saying that this is a "special" release and that the next game will go back to normal with Pro as an option. I'm guessing they'll sneak in a new price rise for the Pro. The colour lcd tax we'll call it?

SLE Batman 66 increased from 30 to 80 units because so many people are throwing big dollars at them - this just made the bubble a little bigger.

Takrn from a letter from Stern to a customer:

Demand for this Super Limited Edition was incredible. We were overwhelmed with fantastic applications and it was difficult to decide who should get these games. In fact, in fairness we could not reject enough applications.
Due to this demand, we have increased the quantity to 80:
· 30 for the 30 years of Stern Pinball beginning with 1986, and
· 50 for the 50 years of Batman ’66 beginning with 1966.

a guy in the US played the Spiderman Home version and thought it was worth sharing incase felt tempted to buy one and what he didn't mention is that when on slingshot activated it activated both showing the cost cutting features of the game as well.

Not having a coin door is not good. Yes this game was built for home use only but with the high MSRP, it does not make this machine worth the coin. If you have a coin door and coin mechs, then you could at least try and put on location to make an income and it would hold value based on the fact it could potentially be an earner. With this machine being priced $1000 less than a Pro model, it clearly is not a good value. If it was priced at $2800-then maybe it would be worth it to a homeowner?

I was able to play the new Spiderman and here are my thoughts....
First thing is it is much smaller than a standard machine and would not look good in a typical lineup. Second is this machine is really light and thus feels really wobbly and not very sturdy. You can easily shake the machine back and forth because of the lightweight cabinet. The layout actually flows pretty good and the ball times are long. The flippers are very responsive and I was surprised on how well they played. Main target is a Doc Ock with drop down targets located on left side instead of the middle with Sandman. It played very basic with not a lot of frills. The DMD pixels look very generic and honestly-cheap. There was one thing that I really liked about the game, and that was the ball stuck feature. It is a brilliant feature where the ball gets caught in a trap on purpose and you have to knock it with the ball in play to remove it. When I first got the ball stuck there I was like-WTF? Then I bent over and read what it was and was like-that's awesome!

I commend Stern for trying to expand their customer base and get more homeowners into the hobby but unfortunately these pinball machines with a lower build quality and no coin door simply are not the solution. Stern has tried to enter this market with the Iron Man/Batman Classic and the "Pin" with little to zero success. They had to blow out the remaining "Pin" models at a discount. I think a pinball machine built for the average homeowner would need to be priced at $2000 or less which is not feasible. Now if Stern were to make a downgraded Pro model priced at $3800 with a coin door for operators, then I think they could potentially sell more units to potential new customers. I think people would be more willing to spend thousands of dollars on a toy if they know they can sell it for close to what they paid for it. Having a coin door will help the machine hold it's value. You can only cheapen a machine so much before it becomes just a paperweight, and worthless. If Stern keeps the coin door and can get the build cost down without compromising much quality-then they may have an opportunity to capture more new blood into the hobby.

If the problem is needing to increase sales volume, then the answer is not a cut down version of a game. Its simple, lower the base price of future or even existing games. Costs should in theory drop with volume. But pinball machines are so labour intensive, so I'm amazed the closest any manufacturer has got to automation is the dimpler which is a bastardized press that by the look of it may have cast on it the letters 'WW1'

With what I see from a lot of the production line vids, I am surprised they use cad software and not pencils and a whole lot of rulers.

But back to the possible problem, a coin door is not the answer and so isn't raising the price for every new release.

Stern Pinball Gets Back in the Rock and Roll Saddle With Its Release Of Aerosmith Pinball

Leading Pinball Manufacturer and Global Brand Management Firm Epic Rights Announce Newest Addition to Rock Lineup

ELK GROVE VILLAGE, IL – January 4, 2016 – Stern Pinball, Inc., the world's oldest and largest producer of arcade-quality pinball machines, and Epic Rights, Aerosmith’s global licensing agent, jointly announced today the availability of a new line of pinball machines that honor the classic and iconic rock band, Aerosmith.

Stern Pinball’s Aerosmith machines reflect the high-energy and excitement that accompanies the experience of a live Aerosmith concert. Players will rock to nine famous Aerosmith hits in the concert arena playfield and embark on an exhilarating pinball experience. Players score points and finish game objectives to raise the audience’s levels of energy, thrill and enjoyment. Higher scores amplify the experience–the higher the energy level, the bigger and louder the show–resulting in an Aerosmith pinball experience that cannot be matched.

The hard-hitting feisty American rock group best known for their powerful fusion of rock and blues has reached fans for more than four decades. This colorful band includes the much loved pop culture personalities of Steven Tyler and Joe Perry. With sales of more than 70 million albums in the United States and more than 150 million albums worldwide. Aerosmith is one of the world’s all time best-selling American rock bands. To date, they have been awarded 25 gold albums, 18 platinum albums and 12 multi-platinum albums.

“We’re thrilled to have Aerosmith join the ranks of Stern Pinball’s rock and roll line-up,” said Gary Stern, Chairman and CEO of Stern Pinball. “Aerosmith is an iconic band with a devoted fan base. Fans of both the band and pinball will be able to appreciate the extraordinary experience that the Aerosmith pinball machines provide.”

The Aerosmith machines all feature original hand-drawn art provided by “Dirty” Donny Gillies, who has produced work for bands including The Hellacopters, The Melvins, Queens of the Stone Age, The Wildhearts, Electric Frankenstein and the 5.6.7.8's, but is most noted for his work with metal band Metallica. In addition, the machines feature custom speech from Brendon Small, creator of Metalocalypse, the American animated television series centering around a death metal band. Players will be mesmerized by the interactive “Jacky on the Box” mechanical feature on the playfield. Jacky sits on a toy box allowing players to launch pinballs through the air and slam dunk the steel ball into the box. The more balls launched into the box, the higher the opportunity for a player to earn multiballs.

“The Aerosmith pinball machines are an ideal way to expand the band’s global brand because they provide a unique and fun experience for fans and consumers of all ages,” said Lisa Streff, Executive Vice President, Global Licensing, of Epic Rights.

In addition to the heart pounding music and game experience, the machine features a full-color high-definition display. In conjunction with Stern Pinball’s new SPIKE-2 electronic platform, the display enables high-definition graphics and innovative animations. The game includes a high-fidelity 3-channel audio system that is three times more powerful than audio systems of previous generations. Aerosmith Pinball entertains with an amazing array of modern and classic features, making it suitable for all skill levels.

Aerosmith Pinball is available through authorized Stern Pinball distributors and dealers around the world.
