Title: Rate my Bally’s
Post by: Pop Bumper Pete on March 30, 2015, 07:45:44 PM
Hey guys, I am not looking for a dollar value, as I will not be selling these games
But I do plan on sorting them out and giving putting the better parts on the more valuable machine.
That is, the straight coin door on the best game

I have the following; (all Bally)
Playboy
Eight Ball
Xenon
Star Trek
Flash Gordon

I would guess Playboy is the most valuable, but how would you rate the others?

They're all crap Pete so off load them to me  ^^^

But if no go its a hard call as some might be more valuable but so so players compared to the others and maybe spending more on say fg will improve the playing experience much more that can't be improved on say playboy.

1 - Playboy - 'muff said. Classic artwork and a game that holds its value. When Hugh has his last hug from his current wife, then this machine will double in value.
2 - Eight Ball - Absolute iconic pinball machine. Chimes, billiard theme and the Fonz on the backglass.
3 - Xenon - In terms of value, this could be #2, but I put it a #3 because I like the Fonz. I think this Bally is often over rated, and then I just stare at the artwork..
4 - Star Trek - picking up in value. A better player than #1, #2 & #3, but not as valuable.
5 - Flash Gordon - The best player of all the games. Often trashed playfields but perfect backglasses.

If I owned all five games, I'd throw the $ at the Playboy as a keeper, but Flash Gordon as the best player. I'd play all games equally, but would gravitate towards the Flash Gordon if I wanted a "serious" game. Xenon is a really nice artwork and themed machine. Actually, they all seem to sit well with each other for different reasons. I think there's a good mix of diversity, and I would not be at all surprised if this was your aim ?

Fantastic collection of Bally's Pete!
Owning acouple of the same machines and having played all of them I really like them all. For me Xenon probably gets more play than FG but I still probably prefer FG by a whisker. FG is just so brutal at times I need to play other games just to restore my pinball dignity.
Eight Ball is my next pick, nice layout and it has the Fonz! Hard to beat that.
Star Trek and Playboy I have only played acouple of times but I really liked Star Trek  even though I'm not a big fan of the TV show.
Playboy for me was just ok play wise but it does look cool.

They are all great and I'd keep them all and probably spend a whats necessary over time to get them all perfect.

Of the 3 Ballys in your collection that I played a lot in my lost arcade years long gone:

Star Trek was my favourite for a relaxed and sane play. I could never stop at just one game. Beautiful, smooth player.
Flash Gordon was for times when I wanted a challenge and something to keep me on my toes. I gravitated between FG, FP and BK at times like this when I wanted to bash something which offered a high difficulty.
Playboy was for the late nights in George St Sydney arcades (and there were a lot of them in the wild back then). A nice drink, an exotic French cigarette and many games on Playboy. Ahhh, those were the nights!
Your other 2 titles I also played but not as much as these 3.

You would almost be sneaking in a Mata Hari or Evel Knievel - both great players. Another from that period that is a real sleeper - Power Play. Those early Ballys were awesome games. Then Bally moved on to the fully featured games like Medusa, Fathom, EBD and Centaur. Personally, I love all the Ballys except Elektra and Future Spa.

Pete, this is a sweet as collection - you lucky bugger  @@*  Mata Hari would be a nice addition. My humble opinion is I'd rank your collection:
1. Playboy
2. Xenon
3. Flash Gordon
4. Eight Ball
5. Star Trek

Flash is a tough tough game, & like some other titles (BSD is one that comes to mind) I think it is often under-rated. I do rate it - & in good condition it's a looker as well.

Any chance at all of a pic of the lineup  for inspiration?

Cheers,
Andy.

I would love to have these games all lined up, and one day I will

I keep buying projects, I start them, but never finish

But now I am going to get these game going
I will start with the easy ones, Playboy and Star Trek, as they are complete and were mostly working when I put them in storage
Then I will tackle Xenon and Eightball, both will take a lot of work and a bit of luck to get them running right

I have all the parts, just need the time to get into the shed

Centaur, Fathom, Eightball Deluxe
Of these games, which one would you want most in your collection?

Centaur 1!!!

Only played a couple of games on an 8 Ball Deluxe so can't comment on that one. It's a hard choice between Fathom and Centaur. Probably Fathom by the narrowest of margins but I change my mine about the best game out of these two often.

Both, a bit like choosing which one of your kids to get rid of.

I have none of the three, but I do have CPR playfields for them all
I am trying to figure out if I am keeping them or selling the playfields.
as I will never have the space for all the games I want

I think if you could find any of these titles you'll b over the moon. No need to choose, the first opportunity you get, take it I think.  ^^^
