Title: Stern KISS Mods
Post by: swinks on May 07, 2015, 08:05:46 AM
 %.%

I thought I would start the first KISS mods thread as I already have a old mod that would be well suited for the PRO version as it doesn't seem to have a speaker.
Premium and LE seem to have the speaker

in which can be found here

Soon as i saw the other Kiss thread and saw the speaker on the playfield, i thought of your Marshall speaker mod Jady  *%*
Yours would look a lot better than what Stern has used  *%* *%*

I'm guessing Stern didn't use the Marshall logo to avoid having to pay Marshall to use it!

Swinks u can go to town on this one! I'm only guessing but I can see this being one of the most modded Sterns to date. I'm a fan of yr marshall cab mod - just no pin to put it on  :lol

The mod that I started last night will suit the game nicely, and with the pro the speaker may look better at the back of the mini playfield area as to not block that area

Is it considered sacrilege to install mirror blades on KISS LE ?

No not at all-I've given up with blades as they just get scratched really bad as the gap is very tight :( I'll be looking for some sort of art :)

Good to see that Marshall stack idea being put to more use mate.

a guy on pinside mocked up orange trim package and suits the decals a little better, and red probably would look good on the premium, though black does look good on the cabinet

Like Swinksy said, black chrome mirrored blades would look pretty sweet, if you can get them?

Mirror blades on the Kiss Pinny would be awesome for sure.

I bought some from Jady(Swinksy) and they are the best on the planet. I bought both types.

The purple on the Pro cabinet looks better than the Premium in my opinion, but again, use caution when deciding by looking at photos only compared to seeing the machines in real life when thinking about metal work colour mods.
But I think purple powdercoat would look awesome and maybe purple legs ?

Any mod u make Swinksy will be a winner. Your designs are always well designed and thought out with excellent pricing. An asset to the forum and Aust wide pinheads.

Anyone got any ideas for a topper mod ?

Nino, what cool Kiss collectables u got that would go on top.
I am thinking Kiss 12 inch Action Figures with a few spots on them plus a few strobes timed to the music ?

Will most likely use the Icy Pole Wrapper I kept (from the late 70's) - I sold a full set to a collector a few years ago, but I kept an "Ace" Icy Pole Wrapper and I think I'll trim it and use it in the place of the scorecard. The other scorecard will be replaced with one of the backstage passes, or tickets stubs to the Reunion Tour. As a topper - the original 1979 KISS Dolls (still in box), or my McFarlane Gene Simmons doll which stands 21 inches tall. I'll need to make a bracket to hold it up, but it would look awesome. Stern will obviously make a topper, and there is an "Alive !" Figurine set that would be absolutely perfect.

A close friend (and KISS fan) is a professional pyrotechnician and he always has these weird and strange items sent to him. I recall a small lighter arrangement that created miniature flash bombs. Now THAT would look amazing.

The other thing I'm thinking of is I have several old 45's sitting in a box - several KISS songs - I might trim one down and use it in the place of an instruction card.

alternatively, i might leave it "as is".

Red or green leds in the demon's eyes will be widespread - a mod to make this easy might be saleable. Another could be interchangeable heads - eg. Ace instead of Gene.

Off topic a little. I keep hearing how gene and paul are money grabbers etc. How will these modders get by the licencing? Won't the two go after anything they don't get a cut from? If so I think mods will be few or very expensive.

I was thinking the same thing, anyone thinking of doing mods without the licence could get possibly get themselves into hot water with these guys.

Is it considered sacrilege to install mirror blades on KISS LE ?

Blades look good, Pete's right they scratch up pretty quickly, Also you have to drill couple of mounting holes, You can put a felt strip along the PF best to do it with the PF removed,
pingraffix.com will most likely release something soon

I think that's still on topic. Always ways around it - eg Gene can't protect the word "kiss" (nobody can) & trademarks do lapse. Never say never - just have to do it right &, if you do get a cease & desist, well get advice before you take it too seriously. He certainly can't stop you doing yr own mods - so go nuts  ^^^

I would have thought the Chineese would have been faking KISS merchandise for years, thus keeping Gene Simmonds and Co busy to the hilt with cease and desist etc, if they have bothered because that in itself would have been a fulltime job.

One consideration, every mod made for a Kiss pinny makes the game more desirable and therefore Stern sells more and the band gets their cut $.
So maybe they will leave the small $25 to $100 mods alone.
Plenty of people made small mods for ACDC and no one ever cared.
Maybe Kiss are too busy looking after their other 3,000 licenced items to care about a reviving pinball industry.
Time will tell.

I think this will be an early mod for most LE owners - in fact I'd have the orange trim ready to put straight on & keep the red nib in case you ever sell it. And if there was ever a machine that mirror blades will suit it's Kiss - imagine that playfield lit & effectively doubled around the edge - I think it's a must have. Is there any way at all to stop these buggers from getting scratched?? Must be some system, padding???

Edit: & does the Stern back-glass chrome trim come off easy enough to put on powder coated trim? Anyone on AP who can mock this up? (it will look awesome).

The easiest way to ensure your mirror blades don't get scratched is to fit them after the playfield is down and secure them will thin double sided Velcro.
You can then take them off very easily before lifting the playfield.
Also, not every machine/playfield scratches the mirror blades.
Some machines incl some new machines don't scratch them at all. It's luck of the draw and cabinets being made of wood, not every cabinet is exact or a tight fit.

I had an idea for for a cheap topper mod that I reckon would look great and reflect and look good with playfield lighting and backbox lighting bouncing off it. Chrome checker plate laser cut into the KISS letters.
That stuff is cheap , easy to laser cut but shiny chrome. Might end up being a $80 or $120 topper. Easy to put a few spots or flashers facing it, coloured or white.
Hoping Swinksy does something on his computer like that. If anyone knows how to laser cut and engineer something like that, Swinksy would easily.

I put blades on my STLE and once fitted they where that tight I had to force the PF down and I mean push hard and they where f**ked :( never again but maybe I had a tight one lol now that sounds wrong.

Not the word "KISS" - but certainly the logo. Mods - yes, no problem. Try and sell the mods and potentially there could be an issue.

The Red trim is simply leftovers from Luci. I much prefer the Orange. I will be removing the red and sending off to the powdercoater's. It is a shame Stern used leftovers and even now, they are not listening to the LE buyers that have asked for Orange and there's even a set of aftermarket rails of Gene's "Ave" bass that looks a million times better than the Stern optional siderails - which look like they are part of a Dinosaur.
Title: Re: Stern KISS Mods
Post by: Caveoftreasures on May 28, 2015, 04:13:35 PM
Maybe the red will look better in person cause there are a lot of reds on the playfield and plastics set.

Also, when looking at the cabinet from a distance maybe the Orange may be better, but when standing in the playing position maybe the red rails might look better against the playfield.

Orange is a very hard colour to like. I am thinking orange will look very "gawdy" when people try to consider replacing the red ? Time will tell.

Also, very thin velco only works extremely well for the mirror blades if u want them to be very easily removable so u can lift the playfield after removing them which is easy and efficient if placed on with very thin double sided tape or thin Velcro. It's not often u ever have to lift the playfield on a new Stern etc. Some cabinets are just so tight yet others have heaps of room as Swinksy said.

Whatever is made public, for sale, with their logo or likeness - will potentially have an issue to deal with. You can make your own mods - for you game. Just don't sell them.

I think it is evident that Stern are putting the squeeze on modders and want to control that market as I came up with the shooter rods and 3 weeks later was legally threatened and then they came out with the same concept. I also suggested the Marshall speaker mods that I had on Shapeways but removed and now learn that another modder contracted with Stern to basically reproduce that mod - speaker & amp combo. I will put the speaker and amp mod back up but will change the logo.

Sad that Stern will slowly squash and squeeze out the modders and the ones they are contracting tell me there is alot of expectations and limitations by Stern. They are killing the creativity and now they are being copy cats....

Legally threatened by Stern or KISS ?

I know KISS comb the internet looking for copyright infringement etc, but I'd surprised if it came from Stern.

I agree with branded items like the kiss shooters that I have now removed and admittedly a bit naive and silly of me, but for the quad speaker and amp seems a bit copy cat and another modder has given me a heads up that they have asked them to make it now.

might be of interest to a few of you

A pinsider designer a insert to seperate the lit letters

This little device will block most of the lighting bleed between the KISS letters on the left side of the playfiled allowing you to distingush between the individual letters. It makes hitting the KISS letter hurry-up much more intuitive.

a new 4 part speaker is available at shape ways for those that want to add a speaker mod to their KISS Pro

Unlike the original release of 2 years ago that Gorgar has, Shapeways can't make the Marshall Logo due to failure during the polishing process. So I created a custom logo - Hanwell and the story behind this name is that it is the small town that Marshall originated and was first based in, in the UK. So it is still linked and looks the part.

You have a few choice of materials for the logos and knobs to customise your look.

https://www.shapeways.com/search?q=swinkshanwell

I have a sample of a multicoloured 3D printed speaker coming soon as well so that will be another option hopefully soon if I am happy with the results.

Lastly I also have some samples of the Marshall Plunger Plate coming soon and all going well will be available soon. Also the good news is that I have Marshall's blessing to use the logo for this as well and were really great to deal with.

latest - the quality of the multicolour 3d printed plastic was crap in colours and a more flexible plastic and subject to warping - samples were throw aways unfortunately.

the 3d printed multi-coloured stone Marshall Amp Plunger Plate came today and looks great, just needs a quick clear coat and install into the recess which will be ideal for the band pins like KISS, AC/DC, Metallica and any others. The knob came in today as well but supplied the wrong colour fluted knob section white - instead of black - but fits perfectly. Good thing with shapeways is if the quality is not up to scratch, broken, damaged or wrong colour you just need to submit a ticket and photo and they then remake the part along with free shipping and you get to keep the original part.
