Title: Welcome to the Big City, Kid!
Post by: pinnies4me on June 27, 2015, 03:33:54 PM
A few months back I decided to try another home project.  This time it was to make a playable whitewood of a rare game, to see if I could achieve it.

The project started late last year, and was progressing well until our friend Greg left us. Because he had been so involved with this in the background (a large amount of the parts used were given to me by Greg), I did not come back to it for quite a while after he passed, and then only because I kept thinking I could hear him say "Just finish the f***ing thing, Nicky!" So a big thank you my friend.

Another big thank you to ddstoys - Dan sourced me a complete playfield from a stern and between the parts from Greg and Dan, the vast majority of what was done could be done.

Unfortunately, there are no documents for this game anywhere, no manual,  no schematics, nothing. So I used a combination of photos and references to other games from this manufacturer to recreate a playfield plan and redesign mechanism placements, and manufacture some unique parts.

All games start with a whitewood. Pretty standard stuff to begin with. One thing I was not sure about was the shooter lane, but I decided on a technique. Initially a "v" groove was cut in undersize, then using a 3/4 inch dowel wrapped in course through to fine sandpaper, the shooter groove shaped. The whole thing took about half an hour and the result was pretty good.

With absolutely nothing to show me how it was designed, I came up with one that made use of a Stern ball shooter trough, cut in half. One half would shoot the ball up, and the other would become the "trough" area to collect the locked balls, mounted in a reverse direction. I am as far away from being an "engineer" as could be imagined, so this was to be very much trial and error. So I made up a mini test rig with the mounted parts.|||http://i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad306/spaners/multiball%20launcher%20underside_zpsodlweioc.jpeg||http://i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad306/spaners/multiball%20launcher%20top_zpsgnvvoqpa.jpeg|||Without any design diagrams, I was not confident, so when I tested it I was pretty happy  :D - .Most of the mechanisms in place, and ground wires run for the switches so that these could be tested before getting to the high power devices..http://i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad306/spaners/playfield%20bottom%20populating_zpsnpiwe8pq.jpg..The most time consuming thing was making the wiring loom. perhaps the playfield and mechanisms took longer, but they were a number of separate projects to work through, whereas the loom had to be made completely from scratch, tested and tagged so I would not loose track of where they were going and have to re-trace things. I guess it might have been possible to buy the 50 or so different colour coded wires I needed, but I ended using up some stuff I had from some donor games, which meant I couldn't rely on a colour-coding system as there would be a number of doubles. Way too many hours went into this process, but luckily Mrs Pinnies4me took sympathy on me, and assisted with making me some Dymo labels as I worked through the loom to help keep things organised. http://i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad306/spaners/switch%20loom%20wiring%20guide_zpsm0tw571g.jpghttp://i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad306/spaners/switch%20loom_zpsa1skee6c.jpghttp://i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad306/spaners/switch%20wiring_zpsrinqorr5.jpg......and a lot of hours later, the bottom switches all wired up. The drop target banks were not initially installed, and stand up switches used to enable testing, as well as mechanical switches to test the opto switch circuits. Despite my best efforts to stuff things up, 48 switches were tested shortly after taking this photo - and 48 switches worked! Mrs Pinnies4me just stared at me as I danced around like I'd won lotto! I was pretty chuffed though!  () http://i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad306/spaners/playfield%20bottom%20wired_zpscnpcqska.jpgOne of the hardest things to sort were the ramps. The left ramp begins with a unique entry which we'll see later, and when I went through my collection of old bits and pieces, found a Data East Teenage Mutant Ninga Turtles ramp, part of which seemed to fit the purpose perfectly, with little modification. However, the right ramp was another story. I scoured the web looking for similar ramps, and found a lot of candidates, but as I analyzed each one, found issues with radius points etc. ElTimbo86 has a lot of old ramps as you can imagine, and worked though them, still not coming up with a solution. Playing my MM while still trying to solve this one, I realised that  its right ramp was exactly correct for about half its length, and that happened to combine from that point almost perfectly with the other bit of the TMNT ramp. Eltimbo came up with an old MM ramp for me, and with some special glue from my mate who has a plastics factory, the Medieval Teenage Mutant Ramp (c) was born.   #*# http://i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad306/spaners/right%20ramp_zpsdb1w56uq.jpegThe drop target banks were obtained for me by Ddstoys, and mounted, and finally all high power coils wired up and individually tested, again without any smoke.........http://i946.photobucket.com/albums/ad306/spaners/finished%20bottom_zpsidrxvonw.jpg...The first full power up after placement in the temporary donor cabinet was pretty nerve-racking, and switching it on one of the scariest moments I have ever had in pinball! I hit the switch and waited for pops/smoke/fire/electric shock - can't say I was disappointed that I got none of that, only the satisfying electronic dong of boot up! I'd love to say that once it was installed, everything worked perfectly, but of course there was a lot of tweaking of various things. And finally, did it work? Well, in the words of the game's designer Mark Ritchie - " Very cool Nick! very curious how you got the dmd and rules going, as it seemed like the impossible for IPB to re-create which meant it couldn't happen?

The problem was not the software. The issue is there is a NLA chip on the cpu. When they did BBB tbey used the cpu stock left over from Capcom.

That said the available ROM is not usable without some tweaking which a nate of mine was able to sort and Daniel burned from the files.

Pete I haven't decided what more will be done. This was more a project to se if i I could do if and I'm satisfied with getting to this point for now.

Thanks everyone for the positive comments!

You're lucky to have played one Tony I doubt I'll get tha the chance unless it does get remade.

I have mapped out the lamp wiring bur there are a few hurdles. Routing for inserts is outside my skill set, although Eltimbo has given me  contact for this if I do go down that path. I have started the harness and Daniel has provided me with the lamp holders so it is feasible.  One really funky effect is the start of multiball "RAID" when the white GI turns red - you can see when during the start of multiball in the video when the lamps in the backbox go out - sould be great to see.

Did you see that when you played Tony?

I don't recall starting raid multiball Nick but will watch the video wotto took of me playing it. The standouts to me were the criss cross ramps and the dots and sounds which you incorporate in your whitewood. The other two things that I really liked were the ball lock for the hide out and when the flippers became weaker and weaker as your life bar dropped until they died.

Well done again, massive effort and result.

Title: Re: Welcome to the Big City, Kid!
Post by: pinnies4me on June 27, 2015, 11:42:46 PM
I have the ball lock working really well - bit hard to see the ramp opening and closing unless you look carefully.

The video is only of ball one so the weakening flippers aren't shown but do work perfectly.

I did have one amazing game and made it to what I thought was the wizard mode , knocking off the Kingpin himself. Turns out that is *not* the wizard mode - there is a further mode after that requiring you to find the hidden loot. That mode needs you to move the character on the dmd by making shots to move him on screen around a maze. During the game as you complete modes you get told if the loot is west or north etc. From my lamp wiring research there are several inserts with the compass directions whick I suspect will assist by lighting during that mode.

I have heard claims that this game is a tad  better than BBB and while I am basing this on my whitewood which is obviously not perfect, I can see this may very well be true.

Really pleased you kept going with this project, Nick. I could tell last time I saw the game you were excited with the progress, and it has come a long way since then.

If I recall correctly, the ball trough multi ball assembly was very particular, and Nick really wanted it perfect to the point he needed a non standard machine screw that was difficult to source. Being a perfectionist, he looked for this one solitary screw in my stash of odds and ends until he found the exact screw. So this is some "back yard" project - it was always going to be a SERIOUS attempt at creating the game from scratch.

If there's anything you need to progress - just pop in mate - Plenty of "Crapcom"  <.> parts I would gladly donate  $#$

Nick, just slightly off topic, but would you mind sharing your story on how you acquired your BBB? I don't mean, "I paid $xxx & it arrived in a container", but rather were you specifically after one, did the opportunity pop up, did you sign up as a pre-order etc? Cheers.

Nutshell version - heard of the game, then the remake, it fit my Sci-fi theme perfectly but had too little info on IPB/Gene Cunningham (and what I heard was not always positive) to be prepared to risk the $ on what was probably the forerunner of the pinball "pay up front" builds.    A few months later I regretted not signing up, and was then prepared to take the risk. So I bought out a spot in the queue when one came up for a small premium over the original ask price. it was the only "factory approved" transfer (I paid Cunningham the original price, and he paid back the original queue holder), because after that there was something of an uproar from people like me who didn't initially make the queue. In the meantime I met our departed friend Greg who was also in the queue, and it was actually over this game and the couple of years wait that we fostered our friendship. When it was done I paid for the airfares to get both games over and Greg was to repay me. Funny, still didn't know Greg that well, but knew enough to know paying out $4K to cover both airfares/duties etc was a safe thing to do....We actually got our games the day before the USA guys were able to collect theirs!

Getting motivated again to progress this. One issue I would like to overcome first before moving on to the inserts and lamps are the metal ramps.

I can't weld, and don't really want to learn as I expect I will spend a lot of time and waste a lot of metal trying. Any thoughts on how something like those could be fabricated?

You need to move next door to me Nick!!! I have almost every tool known to man and probably enough duplicates to set you up a very complete shop if you wanted. I've been making stuff for a living forever and still like doing it and learning new stuff. We'd have that game put together in a couple weeks. I'll even buy the beer. ^^^

But to the point, around here there is always someone in a circle of friends, maybe several, who can TIG weld, which is probably the ideal method to weld the stuff you need. There are sometimes several spot welded parts too depending on the game and that is dead simple if you just had the spot welder. They are relatively simple and cheap but still not very common since it's not done all that often. Anyways, I would think that if you just asked around consistently enough you'd find somebody willing to do that little bit of welding fer nuthin' just for the fun of it, even down there on the south pole like you are.

Working on the wiring loom now, spend a couple of hours over the weekend extracting the wiring information from the software using pinmame which was handy.  Just about everything needed to know is there (although if the switches and solenoids are anything to go by, there may be the odd error given this was still in development). Got all of the feature lamps sorted. The GI (every one of which are individually controlled on Capcom) took a bit of guesswork, but the implementation of the GI is vital to this game, as there is a change of normal white to everything red for Raid Multiball which I think is very important. I saw it work once in pinmame (for some reason it has never worked again) and I think the effect will be excellent.

I want to apologise for not really knowing much about this game, but is that a ramp behind a ramp?

Looks like the front one raises to allow a shot to the back one?

And this is an extremely rare game is that correct? As in less than 10 or something like that.

Looks like an interesting game, would love to see some video if you could do that once it is up and running.

One ramp is higher than the other, so the centre one has a steep entry compared to the one that enters on the right, and they then cross over.

The centre one does rise, but to allow balls to be locked under the playfield for multi-ball.

Nine were reportedly completed, and one since destroyed.

There's some videos here of the whitewood fully playable, and hopefully not too much smoke on the weekend and I will have one then too.

Got it playing well Friday night, but its the Geelong Speed Trials this weekend so had to get things ready for today.  Will organise some vids this week.

As for being made, I believe it is a 95% chance of seeing a limited production run. Expect we'll know more by mid next year.

That's great news!  Any idea on who will be making them?

I do, but it is not for publication at this stage. Don't meant to sound cryptic but I have not been told I can share information. If it gets done, it will in my opinion be done to a quality rather than to a cost given those involved. I have shared some of my work with them, and offered what I have to assist.
Speechless mate. I remember the look on your face when you proudly demonstrated how you sanded the groove in the shooter lane. It has been an incredible journey !

Thanks for the lamp condoms mate!! Will try and get them installed tonight, as they are a big part of the multi-ball lighting effects, so want them going before I do a video.

Thanks mate.

Did you get near to the end where you see where those RTBB red lamp condoms show up (4:05)? I actually thought they were going to come on during multi-ball intro. Turns out not, but I will be talking to the programmers to see if this can be implemented as I think it is a missed opportunity - the game is yelling "Raid!!" by the police - perfect time to alternate rad and clear lights!!

Was just thinking about that yesterday after I put the glass on for the first time and played a few "real" games.

When are you coming over for a flip?

Thanks guys. As much as I enjoy this, looking forward to the "real" ones next year - the thing I like the most about that will be the two sets of codes - original, and updated. I have given the guys a list of tweaks to look at from my observations.

Sorry Nick but I think I've been living under a rock. What a great job mate. I don't think there's many people out there in pinball land that could have done this. The game looks absolutely amazing.

WOW, that's nice!  Congratulations, looking forward to seeing photos of the installation process. Hopefully you'll have time to document it and put up a few posts.

Wonder if the Circus Maximus Group will ever produce this game.  Hasn't been any public comment from them for several years now.  Might be dead in the water.
