Well there is a quick lets get this thing going so i can have a game method and a lets make this thing work for a long time im going to try cover both in this one thread lets see how we go.
Just letting any Noobs know that this looks easy nicely laid out on a table but remember when you do this there is a good chance its hanging out the back of your machine by the wires so it isnt going to behave how you want it to. Dont be scared but You have bee warned.
Step 1. Slide score Reel from backbox

Step 2 Remove the PCB by undoing the C clip and spring washer (be carefull it doesn't shoot off) and the 2 screws holding the PCB on and fald it
backwards becareful not to break any wires if you do take note where they came from

THIS IS THE QUICK JUST WANT TO HAVE A GAME WAY TO FIX IT OR THE IM A SCARED LITTLE GIRL WAY %.%
If you want to do it properly skip to the next post
1. Carefully remove the score reel only not the cog below it.
2. From here take a toothbrush dip it in metho and clean the place with the arrows as best you can try get into where the
metals rub together.
3. Put a tiny drop of machine oil where the two metals rub where the arrows are
4. Clean PCB with metho then the Green jexpad thingy (see step further on slack ass :lol)
5. Put it back together in reverse of how you pulled it apart.
Now enjoy your machine but be prepared to do this regularly.

WELCOME BACK TO THE KEEN PEOPLE WHO WANT TO DO IT PROPERLY
Step 3 Remove the score reel by gently lifting straight up (Might need a bit of a Jiggle)
Step 4 Remove the Cog bit and the spring

Step 5 Remove one screw from the switch stack and swing the stack clear ( or remove it completely but the stack will fall apart)
Step 6 Remove the coil bracket, Plunger and Coil from the Mech ( Fidgity little bugger but does come out)
Step 7 Remove the Spring from Slide Plate and remove it from the base

Step 8 Using metho on a toothbrush and or rag clean the base up as best you can you can see the year of use have worn away
the shiny plating (First 2 photos show the dirt and grease stuck to the Base )

Step 9 While the Reel is apart is a good time to clean the switches with a business card but dont do any adjustment. ^&^
Step 10 Now i place a drop of oil in the places indicated by the arrows but in between the moving metal parts

Step 11 Once oil is there replace the Slide, Coil, Plunger and Bracket (New sleeve if your going that far) making sure the coil is sitting hard against the base plate or else you wont get enough pull to advance the Reel
Again this is fidgity but does go back in once its all back together and screwed tight making sure the lock washers are inplace put the spring back onto the slide.
Test to make sure everything slides smoothly

THIS STEP ONLY APPLIES TO REELS WITH THE PCB ON IT NOT ALL REELS HAVE THESE
Step 12 Clean the PCB with a rag and metho once no more crud can be removed use the Green Jex pad thingy to make the bass track all shiny again also do this to the Brass buttons on the score reel

THIS STEP IS DONE AT YOUR OWN RISK BUT THIS IS HOW I CLEAN THE REEL
Step 13 Firstly be very careful and try a test patch. First try using a soft dry cloth if this fails spray a tiny mist of windex onto a
cloth and gently rub the white areas if this is getting the white ares clean gently try some of the numbers as its no
good risking the numbers if the windex wont clean the white bits. If this fails Try Novus 2 even if windex works try
novus 2 as it looks great if the numbers hold.
Windex was all i used on these reels as the novus has been lost out in the rubble but looks fine with windex only.
Also never test on a Zero as it will be shown most of the time if the other players dont get used often
Photos show the Area around the 3 once cleaned

Step 14 Thoroughly clean the Nylon Cog thingy and the cog section on the score reel as pointed out in the photo any dirt left on
here will cause friction and slow down the reel
Step 15 Replace the Spring over the shaft making sure the nylon washer is at the base of the shaft then then place the cog
Section over the shaft the trick here is to slightly pull the slide plate back enough to let the cog slide down the shaft
with the final tooth of the cog to be on the first tooth on the slide plate. (I hope this makes sense as i couldnt get a
good photo to much shine from the flash)

Step 16 Making sure the reel still has the wiper arms and nylon washer attached slide the reel over the shaft onto the cog section. It doesn't matter where the reel is as the steel rod rubbing on the back of the reel tells the mech which number its on.
Step 17 Now reinstall the pcb simply bend it back into place put the spring washer over the shaft then re apply the C clip once thats done center the PCB and install and tighten the two screws holding it down.
JOBS DONE $#$ Now only 15 to go if its a 4 player !*!

Yes great thread, well documented! Just one question.. do you use anything on the PCB/contacts to lubricate them or to help stop the PCB tracks from tarnishing??
I have to do all of this on my Zac Universe when i finally get around to getting it going/restoring it... lol

No i just leave them Nude does anyone put anything on to stop em tarninshing??? I always figured that some form of lube would attract dust and clog up? Might be worng though

Great info here Daniel
I put a very light smear of Superlube on the contacts . Superlube is a synthetic grease designed not to attract dirt/dust . It is expensive but one tube lasts a very long time .

These devices have been around for 40 or more years and still work! More importantly they can be pulled apart and cleaned up with simple tools and no tiny parts.
Score Reels are relativley easy to source still as most pinball repairers have boxes of them out the back. If you are unsure of your skills they make an excellent project to get your confidence up. There are enough parts to keep you thinking while the mechanics are pretty simple.
Only thing I would add is NEVER rotate a score reel backwards as this bends stuff and ruins your whole day....
