Title: Removing a Williams Pop-Bumper
Post by: MartyJ on December 03, 2008, 07:26:32 PM
Hi Guys,

A quick noob question.  What is the correct way to remove a pop bumper on a Williams (PF)?  I've removed the metal lower skirt, unscrewed the two screws inside the white body and all that looks to be left is the lamp socket holding it in.  I've looked underneith and I can see the metal strips, but no joins to desolder to get it out.  Do you just make a cut and re solder?

Thanks in advance

Unsolder the lamp socket and remove the entire assy from the top

Done.

Not an easy job.

For reinstallation (I will get some new ones), it may be impossible to get staples in there.  Is there any alternative?

Regards

They are a bugger of a job - surely someone has come up with a mod that allows this to be done easier? As for the staples, you will need to secure the metal strips to avoid them shorting etc, just be ever mindful of playfield thickness when deciding on something - nothing worse than something going through!

No problems !

Go to jaycar or DSE and buy a length of heat shrink tubing. Slide a piece cut to size over the leg (or both) that you think may short out with the bumper body etc.. Done !

As for the staples - I have a tool I found that is really strong and sharp - I lift one side of the staple and feed the light socket leg OUT.. do the reverse going back in with a tack hammer...

I use a proper hand staple gun these days - I've kinda made my own tool kit out of some strange stuff !!

So your problem is now  - how to tidy up the wires ?

Are the old staples still intact ? Can you feed through the wires and then tap the staples down again ?

At the moment, no...Still waiting on some other parts!  But next week, maybe Tuesday or Wednesday it will be!

I should be OK with staples.  I think only one dropped off completely.  The next question will be wiring....I took photos but unfortunately the flash was too bright and just reflected...

I believe there are three yellow wires (hooked up previously) which look like they are jumped off the std GI bulb?

put them in and trim to the size you need they are already insulated and theres no need to staple these
to the playfield, I'm pretty sure that the newer sterns are not stapled
