Hi guys, here is another one for my restoration queue... Gtb Pinball Pool. I got this one from Cam (big dog) as payment for work done on one of his machines, id spotted this one in his garage while visiting him (he had two pinball pools, a really nice condition one and this one pictured here). Been waiting to get this machine for months, finally got it today when he came up to pick up his Meteor i repaired for him, and he brought this game up with him.
Pinball Pool is one of my wishlist titles, so when i spotted this one i wanted it!! Also i thought it'd be an ideal project machine for me, since i love a challenge.. and this one fits the bill nicely :lol . It'll need a lot of work, especially the cabinet... it has some pretty bad water damage, so a donor cabinet will have to be found... or built from scratch.

pics of the backbox.. CPU board missing, no problem because i was given a system1 CPU a few months ago, looked up the game ROM letter of the ROM that was fitted to the board... it was from none other than.. PINBALL POOL #*# hows that for luck!!
I also have a spare Ni Wumph CPU as well that i can use if need be.
Some water damage here too. will probably have to make a new light board for it.
no backglass pics yet... Cam forgot to bring it with him @.@ silly bugger <.> <.> :lol

Playfield is in not too bad condition, not too much wear, a bit around some of the inserts, and a couple of broken plastics

I removed the displays and tested them on my test rig.. all good. I tested the driver board as well, It had some if the lamp outputs not working, so i'll be replacing a few driver transistors by the looks of it. No big deal really, should be fairly simple.

some under pf shots... dont ya just love the "Barry the bodger" fixes, ie the slingshot coil mounted with rubber bands :lol
I must point out too that this is how the game was when Cam purchased it, and i think that today was the first time he'd even seen inside it!!
and one of the driver board being tested on the test rig. All of the outputs worked this time when i set it back up in the test rig for the pic... the top connector must not have been seated properly before, only a quarter of the lamp LEDS (ones in two horizontal lines under the board) were lit before.
Im really looking forward to this restore, being, as i said before one of my wishlist games. I used to play one of these in Laurieton about 20 yrs ago at a caravan park there, where one of my mates father lived. i used to go there with him, he and his dad used to be in his shed building radio controlled boats, and i'd piss off to the caravan parks games room and play pinball :lol :lol

Well Mitch im not going to wish you good luck on this because you really dont need it give it a few weeks and this Piece of crap will be a show piece. But as said before the playfield looks really good compaired to the cabinet.

Unfortunately the backglass isnt that great, i've seen it, its worse than the Zac Universe glass that i restored, with heaps of cracking in the ink. Cam sealed it though, so it shouldnt get any worse. I MAY be able to restore it.. not sure yet though. i'll decide once i get it here. Might even have to try and find a better one. anyway this game will absolutely NOT be parted out *.* *.* *.* *.* my mind is firmly made up about that!

Today i decided to put the game together, and see if i could power this beast up and make her work, at least enough to see what other work i would have to do on her.
First thing i had to do was to check that the power supply worked. This power supply looks to have never had any work done on it.. very unusual me thinks!! it even still had the original main filter capacitor for the 5 volts (big blue one). When i powered it up (with no other boards plugged in of course), all voltages were there, except the -12volt. since it was only this voltage that was missing, i decided to use the Ni Wumph CPU to test the game, since this board doesnt need the -12volt output. The power supply will be fully rebuilt during the restore.
Next i had to repin some of the connectors that were obviously no good, ie corroded and/or broken pins, and as i powered up the boards and displays i found more and more! no surprise really considering the state of the rest of the game. One of the connectors was completely missing (last pic), the coin door switch connector, so once again i ratted thru my spare bits n pieces and luckily i had the correct connector housing. I then had to re-wire the connector with new pins... WITHOUT the proper game manual!! all i had to go off was my Buck Rogers coin door switch matrix, diagram, and some of the wire colours were different. so i had to trace the wires from the coin door switches, through the coin door connector (where the wires changed colour!!) and up to the switch diodes, using my multi meter as well checking for continuity between the switches and the diodes!! From the other side of the diodes the wire colours changed yet again! eventually i had the connector re-pinned and working, clocking up credits and games etc #*#
The sound board had been butchered a bit, and of course didnt work. the regulator section was working and had the 12 volts there to run the ICs, but i worked out the amplifier IC was dead. Rather that muck around, i grabbed another sound board from my stash of parts that i remembered was there, and used that instead. I'll repair the original board another day.

at this stage the game was mostly working, with the exception of a few display digits/segments (3rd pic). So i then replaced all obviously damaged pins to get the displays all working properly.
Also i had to re-pin the playfield switch matrix connector, as it had a LOT of broken pins (1st and 2nd pics) I ended replacing ALL of these pins in this connector.
The rest of the connector, as i said i only repaired what had to be to make the game work, but i intend on replacing ALL of the pins on all of the backbox connectors when i start the full restore of the game.

SHE WORKS #*# #*# played a few games on her this evening, had to fix/clean a few switches that were intermittent, flippers and one bumper switch. also a couple of the remo-trip coils that knock down the opposite drop target arent working, but they can be taken care of when i do the PF resto.
It'll be a RIPPER of a game when its done.. to be honest i could hardly remember what this game was like to play all those years ago.. but playing a few games today it kind of all came back to me pretty quick!! This one might even jump the resto que yet, ahead of Quickdraw!!

Great acquisition, and kudos for keeping this from the trash heap - looks like lots of work but it will be worth it - one of the better system 1 games. I know of one locally I'd like to get the owner to part with one of these days.

Shit i had to dig deep to find THIS thread again.. 10 pages in :D :lol
This project has gained a little momentum now with the demise of my homemade Vortex pin yesterday, after something going wrong and having 43 volts sent thru all of the boards taking out every single IC in the game !!! !!! As a result i have decided against trying to repair it, as it involves remaking one of the boards that was burnt up which is totally out of the question.. i just cannot justify the amount of work and expense to do it.
Yes its a shame that i have to give up on it, but ultimately it would've been scrapped anyway... its not a game i could've ever sold for example, as no one else would've been able to work out how it worked if anything went wrong with the boards.. shit even I had trouble remembering how it worked a couple of times :lol :lol anyway it lasted 15 years so thats not a bad run i guess.
Soooo... since Vortex was built into a Gtb system 1 cab, it will be gutted, paint stripped and repainted in Pinball Pool colours instead of repairing the original cab, which will save me some time and i can simply transplant all the guts of Pinball Pool into the donor cab when it has been painted.

I know there are two AP members who had the chance to play Vortex on several occasions who really liked it as a player & will miss it *%*
In all honesty to me it was just an OKAY game, not great imo but others seemed to like it so maybe i was being too critical of my own work. Over the 15 yrs i was constantly trying to refine it and make it more enjoyable to play.
But you're right its disappointing, as much as i criticized it i WILL miss it. Anyway the PFs will make great decorations for the dungeon so it wont be forgotten *.*
Cabinet has been completely gutted of all parts already, the boards have been launched already but NOTHING else will be thrown out, plenty of reuseable parts there.

Hi guys, I’ve finally been able to get a start on my Pinball Pool resto. Been working on it for the last couple of weeks in my spare time.. finally having some spare time and money to start on it that is :lol
Some pics; 1st couple the the donor cab (ex Vortex) being wheeled out of the house and down to the shed to be stripped of all remaining parts and paint.
3rd and 4th pics… going.. going… GONE!! I sanded the paint off rather than using paint stripper, much less messy and ended up being quicker that way I thought.
Last pic the cab had been completely sanded back, and ready for some repairs, not that many were needed, as it was still solid, and only minor dings to be filled.

In these pic, the only major(ish) work needed was to undo a modification I had made when I built Vortex originally. The pf of Vortex was about 1 inch longer than a standard pf, so I had moved the rear cross panel below where the backbox bolts on back by that amount to accommodate the longer pf.
In the 1st pic I’ve removed the old plywood, you can see where I had cut the plywood where the backbox sits in order to move the vertical panel back.
2nd and 3rd pic show it being reconstrusted and finished respectively.

More pics, filling the shooter assembly hole where I had fitted a Wms shooter rod assembly, and repairing a few split sections in the ply along the bottom of the cab. I’m using Builders Bog for the larger repair like this and Poly Filler for the smaller scrapes and dings.

Last lot of pics for now…
I started spraying the Undercoat a couple of days ago (using Dulux brand spray enamel cans). And after a light sand back this morning (and repairing a few missed inperfections) the final coats of undercoat went on. I did about 3 or 4 coats in all.
Also I have sprayed the inside of the cab to test out the colour im using for the basecoat.. White Knight Bright Orange spraycans, which is a pretty close match to the original colour, only slightly brighter. The 1st pic was taken yesterday evening, I have since sprayed the inside again with one more coat.
Hopefully, weather permitting I will have the exterior sprayed in the next day or so.

QUICK UPDATE:
Basecoat done today!
First though I gave the undercoat a quick sand with 240 grit, followed by 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper (sanded dry) before the paint went on. I did about 5 coats in all to get good coverage.
These pics show the colour as being MUCH brighter than it is in person (due to the camera flash), It does actually match the original colour fairly well.

After I had let the paint dry for an hour I added the black splatter paint, using thinned out enamel and the tooth brush method…dipping the bristles into the paint and using a piece of plastic to flick the bristles, so as to create the dots of paint. As usual I tested it on a piece of cardboard before trying it on the cabinet :D

Next plan of attack will be to start on the backbox while I let the basecoat dry for a week before I start the stencilling.

Hi again peoples, Quick update;
Started on the back box over the weekend.
These pics show the original backbox, and why I’m replacing it, having had water through it at some stage. It’s fixable (new top and bottom panels) but I figured there’s no point at all in messing around with this one considering I have a second one that is MUCH better to use. Again I’m using the backbox from Vortex as it’ll save me a heap of time and work.
The light insert panel will have to be remade too.

I ended up replacing the bottom panel on the donor backbox as it had been wet as well at some stage of its life and had sagged a bit, thought it wasn't as bad as the original i decided to do it anyway.
Didn’t take long to do.

More pics… holes for bolts and wiring cut. Now its time to do a few dent repairs and prep it for undercoat.
The rectangular base piece was yet to be finished and attached when these pics were taken, and was just sitting on the backbox ready to be worked on... it has since been finished and attached.

After giving the undercoat on the backbox a sand back this morning, i got the basecoat done on the backbox done today, as well as the black splatter paint #*#

A few more pics for now... backglass frame being prepped for undercoat, and the backbox pedestal piece which i have to remake due to it being water damaged. This is what had happened to the original backbox, yes the BB was just as bad as this (wasn't quite so obvious in the previously posted pics of the original backbox), hence why i replaced it rather than repaired it.

From blue to orange the new orange is looking a good match with the original.
I was one of the a/p members to play the Vortex I had it in my shed for 3-4 mths and with the lower p/f it was challenging and lots of fun, it also talked to me :lol
Mitch I know that you will miss it !!! but nothing is wasted as pinball pool will be a great fun game

Somehow i managed to f**k up the registration a bit on one side @.@ i'm a bit pissed off about it, but i really couldn't be bothered doing it all again so i'm gonna leave it as it is. Besides registration errors were common on most of these old games anyway as most of you will know already.
Will start on the cabinet over the weekend, (being a bit more careful to line the stencils up of course) :D

Hi guys, just thought i'd post a quick progress update;
below are some pics of the cabinet side stencils being traced and cut
1st pic, tracing the art on the old cab which i kept for just this purpose
2nd pic, yellow stencil ready for use
3rd pic, cutting out the stencil for the black
4th pic, completed black stencil.
Same as i did on Ian's Genie cab, i made one tracing for both colours, then traced this onto the cardboard with carbon paper for the yellow stencil.
For the black i just cut through the tracing paper and cardboard rather than trace it onto the cardboard then cut.
Notice in the last pic, after i had cut the yellow stencil, i had traced the 1st stencil in green marker pen onto the carboard for the black stencil. I did this to help ensure good alignment of the two stencils when i did the cutting of the black stencil, and ultimately for correct alignment and registration when spraying.
I'm using the back and bottom edges of the cardboard to align the stencil to the cabinet for this one (stencils were double checked for correctness on the old cabinet).

Notice the orange section in the 2nd pic i have indicated with the black arrow, that is absent in the 1st pic..
It was necessary to create a 3RD small stencil to do this bit!!
When i was making the stencil for the yellow i realised that there was this section of orange that was impossible to incorporate into the yellow stencil, since it doesn't connect to the rest of the orange! Originally i thought 'no worries i'll just cover this bit with masking tape when i spray the yellow'... simple i thought *%*
THEN stupid me, forgot to mask off this bit and cut it before i did the yellow, didn't i?? @.@
i'd already made a small cardboard cutout of this, which i was going to trace onto some masking tape stuck on to the cab, so i simply used this and added the orange over the top of the yellow.. problem solved *%* (this had already been done in the previous post when i had taken the pics).

pics of the cab sides completed, plus a before and after showing the rotted backbox pedestal section and the new one i made to replace it.

I made a start on reassembling things this evening.. bolted the new legs on that i bought nearly two years ago, new leg bolts, i just need to get some more leg levellers as i used the last of the ones i had on other people's games.
Also i started polishing up and refitting some of the metalwork inside the cab. Not a lot to look at much as yet but i'll put up a few pics anyway since i'm here :D
Will add more later on as i make more progress with it!!

Some more reassembly pics;
Side rails regrained and reinstalled; i had a couple of sets of Gtb side rails here so i picked the best set of the two to use.
And the lockdown bar clamp tidied up and refitted.. i chose to paint this as it was in pretty ordinary shape.. ie rusty and didn't clean up real well.. AND it was the better of the two that i had!! I used White Knight silver hammered metal to paint it with , as i had some on hand. Anyway it looks a LOT better than pitted bare metal *%* *%*

More pics, Transformer/power supply panel being refurbished.
I stripped the board of all components, took off the fuse labels and gave the plywood a light sand then gave it a couple of quick coats of clear acrylic to pretty it up a bit :D I didn't go silly with the clear.. just enough to seal it a bit and no more, so its not so glossy as to look out of place.
While the clear was drying i scanned the labels and cleaned up the images and printed new ones to staple onto the board. I used plain A4 paper and covered them with some mylar to protect them, so they'll be easy to clean!
All of the wiring and transformers were cleaned while it was apart, using Nifti and rag, and a toothbrush for the stubborn bits.
I stapled the new labels in place and reassembled everything, then refitted it all back into the cabinet.

Cheers Cam ^^^ ya know that this cab was from Vortex dont you? its just a shame that that game died a nasty death but its cabinet was put to good use for this restore *%* I still have the old cab from this game, havent chucked it out, it can still be saved i reckon, might keep it and do it up for another project one day

Just another quick update;
The original backbox had a serial number stamped onto the top of it (1st pic), so just for the sake of keeping this game as original as possible (and just to see if i could do it) :lol i decided to recreate it on the donor backbox.
The pics tell the story..
i took a scan of the original serial # printed it out onto paper and used that to trace it onto some masking tape stuck onto the backbox using carbon paper. Cut it out, masked off and a couple of light coats of black paint... DONE!!

Well i had to dig deep to find this thread again.. it's only been on the go for SEVEN YEARS after all :D :D
Having some time on my hands being between resto work, i decided to get back onto some of my own projects, so i dug the Pinball Pool playfield out of storage and get it ready to start on.
A few pics for now.. playfield mounted in one of my jigs, mylar and glue removed and ready for some insert and touchup work.
Pics tell the story of what needs to be done; will add more pics as the work progresses!

The weather has been shit here for the last few days.. raining one minute then sunny and hot and humid the next, which means painting on the p/f is out of the question.
So i decided to grab the coin door and refurbish that instead to help move forward with the resto *%*
First pic obviously BEFORE starting, really dirty and disgusting!
Second pic showing the stripped, rusty inner frame after removing the stainless outer door skin! This was a good opportunity to put the sandblasting cabinet to work that i bought nearly a year ago @.@
Third and fourth pic; the coin entry plate components.. rusty as hell!! and after about five minutes in the sandblasting cabinet.. much betterer!! :D Remember this game came to me with a rotted water damaged cabinet!!

A little more progress made on the playfield over the last couple of days, despite the 40+ degree heat i had to deal with today!
Whites redone in the areas covered by the plastics;
Notice with the captive ball area in the center of the p'f (2nd and 4th pic) i chose to spray the entire area white (actually beige was the colour i used). This was done in order to give a nice even white base for the red and make it 'pop' more once it was airbrushed on.
Some filler work has also been done around the inserts that had wear back to the wood, Automotive primer/filler was used to build the surface up level again and sanded level ready for touchups.

Thanks for the kind words guys.. though progress has slowed up yet again, due to other work and some health issues. It'll get there eventually.. some time before i die i hope :lol
No pics for this small update but i've been slowly going through all of the inserts, removed each one and filled with clearcoat (which is a slow and painful process, fill/sand fill/sand etc etc until level) then regluing and leveling into the playfield. Only a couple to go and then i can continue with touchup work!
