Title: Flash Back, Melbourne
Post by: PinPal on July 06, 2011, 10:03:45 PM
Here is a couple of picks taken from a magazine I have on how to beat Space Invaders, it has a couple of picks of Flash Back that was on Bourke st Melbourne around late 70s to the early 80s. I went to this place in my younger days and still have a token from there when I playd the machines.

I went into a TimeZone or maybe was an intensity the other day and there was no pinnies to be seen. A sad sight indeed. Guess I missed the golden age of pinball halls.

Wish I grew up back then. I had playtimes and timezones when I was younger that had a few pins, some good shooting games but mainly redemption crap. The timezone near me currently has a lotr limited edition and a deceptions transformers limited. The transformers is out of order and the lotr has a dodgy plunger but is playable. Sad they don't get more seeing as they get played a fair bit compared to most of the crap in that place.

I remember them like yesterday. Wall to wall pinballs and no video crap. Those were the days.

Flashback in Elizabeth St had the infamous "out of order" on the SYSY80 machines - Black Hole, Spirit and Haunted House. I used to catch a train into the city in the early 80's to play these games, as Dad's Business NEVER sited any Gottliebs after the issues with SYS1 machines. Just Ballys and Sterns. So I used to travel into the city to play the "other" games.

I went to the movies over the school holidays. The arcade at Epping Plaza was a ghost town. Full of redeption rubbish and dedicated video machines. The cinema is full of kids, and the arcade was a ghost town. One pinball - big Buck Hunter. How bloody stupid to site a game like that in an arcade ?

The "good old days", you had to line up your 20 cent piece and wait your turn. Videos killed arcades. Now we have a generation of kids stuck to computer screens !

Just read the Hercules thread and someone played it there too

Yes Hercules was at Flashback Bourke street.  A few years ago I was working at Crown Casino and they had a Hercules in a back of house storage area? Don't know why it would have been at Crown cause this was only five years ago.

I thought Flashback was downstairs in Elizabeth Street ? I don't recall an arcade in Bourke Street ?

I don't remember if it was still Flashback, but i do recall the 2 (or 3?) level arcade almost across the road from the large Village cinemas on Bourke Street....maybe up or down a few shops, but certainly somewhere 'almost' opposite Village cinema complex.

I used to go there a bit in the early 90's, although the main arcades were side-by-side on Swanston Street, between the odd pawnbroker shops, and a few on Russel st? mainly video, but a 'few' pins.

Other than that, we ended up playing a lot more pins that started appearing in cinemas, somewhere around the lounge areas....we often went to the movie 1-2 hours early, just to play pins (and video) before the movie, OFTEN leaving a bunch of credits on games because "we had to go" etc.

That looks like the top of Bourke Street, near where the Metro Nightclub is today ?

The arcade I went to was definitely in Swanston or Elizabeth. You walk down a set of stairs, then to your left is McDonalds, and to your right was the arcade that had the System 80s. They were there for YEARS. I remember either a Fire! or Big Guns was opposite the area the SYS80s were. The SYS80s were on a small platform. Behind the Big Guns were rows of video games against the wall. P47s and an Ambush dedicated cabinet.

I remember the Swanston Street one down stairs near Mc Donalds. Was it called Playtime? Not sure.  There was also one downstairs in Flinders Street, between Elizabeth and queen, opposite Flinders Street Station and it didn't take cash u purchased tokens

Found another two picks from an old mag I have.
This is of Invaders Pinball parlor, opp Flinders Street Station Melbourne around 70s and 80s.
This is where I first seen Gottlibes Hunted House and a neat pin called Caveman, half video half pinball..
