Title: Ghostbusters - Custom Pinball
Post by: pinsanity on March 24, 2012, 10:34:28 PM
Whilst we are on the topic of custom pins, here is another from the US that is nearing completion.

This is a one off private machine built from a converted Flash Gordon (the FG was completely trashed).

From playfield concepts to finished product:

I saw this on pinside the other day, beautiful work. Do you know how he has done the playfield graphics?

Modern wide format printers and excellent programs like Corel Draw make things like this a doodle....looks good.

Can you then clear over the vinyl print?

I helped out on the playfield overlay. The first one was oversized & a second one was done. It is cold laminated over clear color film. You apply it wet, & cut out targets, lanes, etc. You prep the playfield by sanding, cleaning, varethane coats, maskining for white, applying white base paint, layers of varethane sanded smooth before applying.

The first pictures are the overlay on my light table here in Halifax. Overlays don't need any clear coating, color on clear film, & then cold laminated on top! I hope to do a few custom pins myself, & help others looking for overlays.

If anyone is interested in doing a custom pin with a playfield overlay. It's about $150 which gets you the overlay & masking for white, + shipping.

Great to know John, something I am interested in the future.

Do you reckon you could post a new thread in this custom games - mods section detailing the process and what a customer has to supply to you and how they need to have a playfield prepared, I am sure many people would find it a interesting read and you may get a few bites which is a bonus for you..

Here is a link for a recent video:

"Here's a short gameplay video that shows a little of where I am at with the audio in the game. I didn't want to post on youtube or anywhere else as there is still some work to be done. Some of the finishing touches are taking longer than expected, so I wanted to show some of the progress and start answering some questions just for the pinsiders..."

Here is a little bit info released:

"Here's an overview of how I redid the playfield... Using a scan of the playfield and adjusting to precise measurements between inserts I was able to create a blank canvas, so to speak. I filled in all the artwork at 300ppi using Photoshop. The physical playfield was sanded down to bare wood. White auto acrylic was applied after masking off all the inserts and the shooter lane. After removing the masking, several coats of polyurethane were applied. I then installed an overlay provided by John Greatwich @ Direct Ink which was basically the artwork printed on a clear film cold pressed to a mylar top layer. The inserts shine right through the clear film. The end result is virtually indistinguishable from a new Stern playfield, both in appearance and gameplay."

"I did every aspect of the game in a fairly low-tech way with great results. It should be fairly straightforward for someone else to retheme their own game. I am planning to ultimately put up a webpage that will have all the information.
As for the audio, that has been my most closely guarded secret throughout the production. It was somewhat experimental and I didn't really know for sure how it would work until the end. It's so simple that I am sure others will use it to retheme games. I have next to zero programming knowledge and no sophisticated equipment. I used two mp3 microcontrollers working in tandem which are fed into a mixer. One primarily drives the music and track changes while the other primarily handles sound effects and callouts. I used two so that I would be able to overlap the sounds with the music being played (this seemed to be a big shortcoming with previous methods I had heard of). The microcontrollers are activated by separate switches which piggyback existing switches, targets and assemblies in the game."

That game is amazing. What an incredible soundtrack, and with the sound bites from the movie incorporated as well.

Thanks for the link.  ^^^

I would prefer to make new custom playfield, & not use an overlay. Cost would be $600 US + shipping. Custom backglass can be done for $200 US + shipping.

To clarify is that custom playfield with we design and you cut the playfield and print or we supply the playfield and you print only.

I supply the playfield finished. Light lenses would have to be available. You would need to supply cnc file & art file. Glass is easy, just need art with color, white, & blocking layers.

Some people have asked for this overlay. It isn't being done again. It was a custom one of a kind project.

Plastics look very cool, as does the car. A lot of work by the sounds of it but they'd have to be happy with the end results.

this owner / builder Betelgeuse (pinside) of this machine has posted how he did the sounds with the MP3 trigger

"By popular request! I have finally got around to putting together a video of how the MP3 Trigger V2 was used in Ghostbusters to integrate the music, sounds and quotes into the game. I have had a lot of questions on how this was done and it's a bit difficult to explain through text, so I hope this helps. I have tried to cover everything, but I am sure there will be some details I missed, so please ask if you have questions. The game is still in a constant state of flux, so please excuse the crudeness of some of my work."

Part 1

Part 2

sound good video of what the game looks like and how to wire up and run a MP# trigger system relatively easy. Also on part 2 a full game played out, a interesting watch.
