Restorations / Re: The Addams Family High End Restoration
« Last post by Strangeways on August 10, 2023, 05:42:37 PM »
I've had some issues with my hands over the last few years, so I had my son have a go at stripping several machines for me. All I did was take photos !

As part of every restoration, photos are the most important part of the documentation process - even after disassembling many Addams Family machines, it is still good practice and the first thing to teach someone starting out. Every mechanism and assembly must also be documented.

"The Thing" scoop has had a hard life and even after rewelding, it is going to be a problem. I don't bother TIG Welding these back together. A Mantis Scoop is a far better option.

After disassembly, all parts are placed in the Ultrasonic Cleaner for 30 minutes at 50C Degrees. They will now be replated (in house).

All the componentry is put aside, as the cabinet is the first item to re assemble. Tim at "Hot Rodded Pins" re-decaled the cabinet some time ago, and the customer sent me the "bling" items - and when I say "bling", it is ultra BLING..

It was really hard to take photos of the legs. They look incredible in person, but very difficult to capture in a photo.

Next we have the Mirror blades, Playfield Glass Slide, Siderails and lock down bar test fitted. The Lockdown Bar reciever will be a new part - you cannot simply polish the old one. This game screams for everything to be perfect !

All black cabinet bolts were painted a gloss black - it looks HEAPS better than just the standard. The Steel ones are buffed.

The Shooter Rod is incredible. Just amazing finish ! Even the Black bolts create a contrast on the bling of that knob  #@#

Restorations / The Addams Family High End Restoration
« Last post by Strangeways on August 10, 2023, 04:49:19 PM »

I've lost count of how many Addams Family machines I've either restored or reconditioned over the years. This is another High End Restoration that was started years ago and I've slowly made enough progress to start a Restore thread. BTW - There are a few Restore threads I need to start over the next week or so. In addition, there a few games that have been finished a while ago that I need to update.

This game is one of our machines that will be restored to the Highest Standard possible with some serious "bling" added to the cabinet and also to the playfield. It will boast a Pinsound system and Color DMD and some other mods. The playfield will be a CPR Gold with an additional clear and polish from Tim at HRP.

I'm going to bring this thread right up to date now, but I'm not adding the typical "teardown photos" as there are 3-4 other threads with the same posts.

Condition Report

It is a reasonable but typical "routed to death" machine that needs a LOT of new replacement parts along the process.

Playfield - 7/10 - typical wear around the Mansion and Chair Scoop - A tired playfield.
Cabinet - 7/10 - Not as bad as I've seen. Will have new decals.
Electronics - 8/10 - Some of the boards are in really good shape. Missing the "Additional Flipper" board..

Before Pictures

The Playfield pictures are not really necessary because it will be replaced with a CPR Gold !

.. and Here is the Classic Playfield Reproductions Playfield with an extra Clearcoat and buff from Tim at Hot Rodded Pins..

OK so this project continues even after the customer forfeited the project. I've invested a lot into the project and hit some serious brick walls on a number of fronts. The update is that the cabinet has to be built from scratch. Years after painting the headbox base white, it has started peeling like the lower cabinet. Also a quick check of the boards in this machine - they don't work 100%... So much for a working machine that needed reconditioning.

So this game has changed direction significantly and now that the backglass and plastic set has been reproduced, this will be the "High End Restoration" that I was in a way dreading as I've spent so much time and money on it for no return. BUT now it will be a restoration that will further test my patience !

Speaking of "patience", Tim dropped off the perfectly restored playfield a couple of weeks back and I thought at least I could post photos of this incredible restoration. Photos don't do it justice, but I did find it funny that the playfield was completed in 2020 !

Thanks to Tim for such an incredible job restoring this playfield. Next will be the cabinet and I will have to work out what to do about the boards. One POSSIBLE option is I have a very "switched on" and ambitious Pinball Person who may look at reproducing the ENTIRE boardset...  #@#

(younger generation)

All I can say is what I noticed with my grandkids
I took my Grandson to a meet, the guy had all the latest games, but what got his attention was World Cup Soccer
The cartoon dog on the backglass got his attention, and the swing goalie was an obvious target
Even now, he likes to hit Doc Ock on spiderman for the red glow, and just likes Godzilla

Might attract new (younger generation) players - not that they can afford it, but how did "Toy Story" fare ?

This month I've added a file for a 1933 game called Bally - Skyscraper.
It still needs confirmation, but it looks good.
There is also a score card, but I don't know where this goes on the game or its size.

I've added the relay strips for Gottlieb - High Hand and a Roulette Wheel card for Gottlieb - Monto Carlo.
The card set for Gottlieb - Solar City has a complete rebuild of the card set.
As the card set is nearly identical for Gottlieb - Target Alpha, I've also rebuild this set too.
I might have to look at Gottlieb - Canada Dry too...

I've created a large apron cover file for Gottlieb - Southern Bell and an instruction card set too.
Added a Switch Assignment chart for Stern - Lightning.
Williams - Disco Fever has a complete rebuild of the card set and added the score inserts.
Williams - Soccer has received some score inserts too.
Williams - Strato-Flite has been rebuild and complete with score inserts.
I must look into Super-Flite as it uses the same playfield, but is the 2-player version of Strato-Flite.

So much to do and so much to keep track of.
I often forget there are multiple versions of some games as 2 and 4 player versions.
They use the same cards (with some minor adjustments) most of the time.
Right now I'm working on Williams - Space Odyssey and Space Mission.
They are also each others copy as 2 and 4 player games.

That's all for now.
Below is a complete list of all the changes this month.

Enjoy and have fun,
Peter

Probably another reason these are now more popular is the availability of replacement "jumbo" displays.

Even in Glorious colour! ^^^
Yep the displays put people off this and the other jumbo display titles big time I cut one up because the display was dead
