Ok guys, little help please. Pulling my flippers apart as we speak. What exactly am I cleaning here? Am I just removing black 'dust' from around the housing and mech etc? Should I be using anything to clean with or just ragging it down.

PS: there are no plastic coils found when pulling these apart. Could this be a problem as to why they are not snappy enough?
