I take it this idea (of a second, vertical playfield) was either too expensive or just not popular, as I don't think I've seen another one like it before.

Yes this was the first game designed by Pat Lawlor, the backglass playfield was never used again due to cost.
I have spent a bit of time playing Banzai Run and enjoy the game, it would be a keeper for me if I could find one at a reasonable game, probabally due to the dirtbike theme more than anything.
I found when playing the upper playfield area because of the extreme slope, the best way to progress to the top is to catch the ball on each flipper rather than just flipping when the ball is close, this slows down the play giving you a moment to pause and take aim at the next section.
