As mentioned the wooden kebab stick works (i've used this on the underside many times).  Another good method is to mix up some JB weld.  You must tape the area well (don't want it on art work), but it sets as hard as steel, bonds very well to wood and then drill a pilot hole before re-screwing the post back in.
