I've heard ops used to cut them to make it harder to score from the hit.
These are available from jaycar

Caps often shorted, so cutting off one leg opens the switch again. Ops did this all the time rather than replace the cap.

They are needed with the original MPU board. If you have an ALTEK, then you might not need them as the board reads the switches a lot faster.
