The raised lip on most traditional scanners prevents scanning anything successfully larger than A4.
The HP4670 is the well sort after one that most pinheads use for scanning playfields/cabinets/oversized plastics etc as it has no lip and is relatively portable.
I haven't really kept up to date with this tech but I'm sure these days there are now a number of handheld scanners that would work just as well.
