I know the target can be removed from under the pf but actually separating the plastic disc from the metal stand? or unneccessary.

That is riveted on - Not necessary to remove the plastic post itself unless you plan on replacing the target. Then you will have to re rivet it back on.
this is correct.
if you notice behind the target there is an oval hole, you should be able to turn the target 90 deg and it should fit through that hole.
