I'm a shortarse abt five five and a half. I ALWAYS remove the nuts from the front legs, crank the levellers up and wind the nuts back down from above. Then I set the overall machine levels from there. 
Yeah, the varying leg lengths are a fecking nuisance and I for one am not above (dreadful pun) surgically swapping legs over. Hooray for the old "leg over" 
Bugger convention I say . . . . . .
