I too am a tv tech, another one we frequently hear is, ITS THE POWER SWITCH!  
very occasionally it actually IS the switch but no too often.

sometimes i think that people think there is nothing inside a tv except the pic tube and a power switch

Yup me too in a past life! - power switch, fuse, my favorite was always - "maybe it's just the picture tube" - to which I would reply " you better hope not 'cause this is the picture tube" (pointing to the tube face).

I couldn't count how many 1S2's I used to sell (now I'm showing my age) because "it doesn't glow like the others" - nothing I could say would persuade them otherwise so I just used to give up and sell them one.

Same thing in the days of the VCR - The National NV300 was one of the first to use an infra-red diode for the tape end sensors. I lost count of the people that would insist on buying one because "the lamp is blown".….....I gave up trying to explain to them it was not visible to the naked eye and was very unlikely to be the fault..….
