I take a small chunk of Pergo I kept after installing it in my house - Pergo is fake hardwood flooring with a felt 'backing' glued to it. The felt provides minimal cushioning. I put the chunk on the playfield, with the felt 'down' on the playfield surface so it won't scratch the playfield up - then, I use a small screwdriver or pry bar on the top of the pergo and carefully work it out, one end at a time.
