Starship Troopers and my other Sega Concaves
Must be your screen name causing the typo, but they'd only be concave if you were looking from behind the backglass!!
Nick, i know what u mean. I like to generally quote the original name SEGA gave them inhouse. Its really convex from outside n concave looking forward from behind.lol
(dont make me get out the dictionary and look up convex) lol) but yes, it is a unusual name.
I did some good reading about about that SEGA style from when it first came out and i was lucky enough last year to get to know/talk to a fellow in the USA who was on the design team for SEGA. They were originally tagged the Concave series cause of the headbox shape n listed inhouse as the Concave Series. Maybe the engineers were looking from inside as well.lol Who knows. Just a production name..
When SEGA released them, they marketed them as SHOWCASE to the buying market etc. The idea, was that SEGA was trying to have all their new technology rounded to match the first design release of playstation that was going also to have a plastic concave/rounded design. Sort of a global image thing for their technology.
They also found because they had 2 x neon light tubes/fluro's inside the headboxand with no traditional square sides, the machine could be better seen from most angles and the light apparently dispersed better in the concave shape.
The whole headbox shape was also designed to modernise the pinball machines and set them well apart from other manufacturers. I think it worked well. All of these Showcase machines play fast and are alot of fun. Most games were offered in limited numbers with 3D back translites and the rounded shape also made those 3D effects stand out. EG-STAR WARS TRILOGY IS MOSTLY SEEN WITH 3D, ALTHOUGH RARE.
I LOVE MY SEGAS. ALOT OF BANG FOR YOUR BUCK, & MECHANICALLY/ELECTRONICALLY THEY ALL ARE ARE BLOODY BULLET PROOF. ALSO RARE WITH LIMITED NUMBERS MADE
Thats why they are on my never to sell list. Heaps of fun.
Nick, pls add a few machine names to your earlier post. I am personally interested as to what your best ever keeper is. I am guessing Attack from mars.
Am i right ?
