Stencils - who you going to trust?
« on: June 25, 2013, 10:54:06 PM »
Twisted Pins in US have recently announced the availability of FATHOM stencils.. this no doubt will please US based customers as shipping pricing is always a bone of contention which can make a product seem costly. Stencil vinyl ( well the good stuff anyway) that is available in Aus is imported from US.. this can make it difficult for me to compete realistically as all vinyl is brought in by a distributor and he needs his cut!
A few issues have been raised with my FATHOM stencils.. its been addressed and came about when I had to realign the front to the cab sides. I didn't check the spacing and on a computer screen blown up it looks like 200mm gap or so..my registration checks were done with the sides only.. front is such a simple design that I didn't think to actually cut and spray it out.. ooch!

Anyway... Twisted Pins FATHOM is right here..

I took a look at them and things just didn't look right to me.. I should know, I spent over 25 hours on FATHOM and never want to see a flek inside a letter again.. which brings me to my point. As painful as they are to individually draw as each is individually shaped, it is important that you pay attention to detail and not cut corners.
M on FATHOM looks bare.. quick count reveals 64 fleks where there should be 79... O has 46 where there should be 53, the mermaid tail has none at all! etc etc etc.
Pedantic?.. possibly but these guys also sell HAUNTED HOUSE to which I have the licence.. tut.. tut.
Personally, I don't care if you buy Twisted Pins stencils... McAfee stencils or whoever.. I cant carry them all or possibly make all the files.
But please do bear in mind that in many cases you might be buying wine only to receive fruit juice

That's pretty odd that the flecks in the letters are so far off the correct numbers. I wonder how that occurs, did they just wing it and fill them in without referencing the original?

I'm still keen for a Buck Rogers stencil if your up for it at some point.

Gavin it's simply because you and I do pinball stuff for the love of it - some others do it for money only and the least amount of work needed to obtain the greatest amount of money seems to be the aim for some...

That's it in a nutshell. No passion for their work, and they have simply copied what other have done. The original Pinball Pal stencils were wrong and became unavailable, so Gav picked up the ball after I asked him and I think he spent a lot more than the 25 hours he is saying he took to produce these stencils  #@#. The new stencils by this mob are clearly incorrect. I can live with subtle differences, but not this bad.

I'd rather pay more shipping for a quality product than one that would be useless for a High End Restoration or repaint. I have a problem with restoration products that are inferior on not faithful to the original.

Well how about the collectors that pay us to restore the games as original as possible. They are the ones that truly appreciate the time and effort that goes into creating the stencils. I waited almost a year after PinballPal stopped filling orders, and I had at least two Fathom repaints to complete.

As a professional, I would not use inferior restoration products, so I'd still be waiting if it was not for Gavin's work.
