I picked up a second hand festool rotex 125 shown in the video earlier from ebay for $350.

No dust extractor, just do it outside.  :lol

Yeah I know I couldn't justify $800 plus for them either.

Any advice on a sander that will do a decent job on the cabinet? I will most likely not use it again so I would ideally like something for under $100 - or am I dreaming? I can't justify an $800+one.

to strip decals or to strip residue and smooth the wood?

I now still use a heat gun and scrapper to get old stuff off and then the sander below (less than $100 new) with 'paint stripping' sandpaper first to get glue residue and then 80 grit and then 240 (or something like that) grit paper..

The dust catcher is a bad joke though, I do it in driveway (outside) as it makes a horrible mess ;-)

Cool, that Bosch was the sander I was actually looking at. I'm only looking to do one machine.
For stripping the artwork I'm wondering whether I can get away with my old lady's hairdryer instead of buying a heat gun...I guess will just give it a go.

Try it, if it doesn't work I bought the ozito one below, damn cheap, temperature dial and have done two machines so far with it and works fine still..

Also with the bosch sander you can rip the filter off the back and attach a vacuum but mine didn't fit perfectly needed a bit of fiddling to get it to attach securely..

I've done 2 now, and agree, prepping is the key. For my next, if I do anther, I'd paint the edges of the cap an appropriate colour prior to sticking on the decals. Trimming is actually quite tricky if you don't. That way you can trim short of the corners/ edges without exposed wood. Very sharp knife and metal ruler needed for clean trimming. It's very satisfying in the end though.
