5101 ram substitute

Hi i was wondering if anyone has used 6116 ram instead of the 5101 ram on a pinball MPU, Below is a quote from clays pin repair saying that this can be used as a substitute,

"5101 RAM chip (MPU U8). This chip frequently goes bad on the MPU board. Have several around. Speed is important on these chip. 100ns to 300ns is required (Stern M-200 MPU boards require the faster 100ns speed). Also there are substitute devices available using a 6116 RAM or SRAM."

Hi Ian,

Not sure about the 6116 - I reckon Dean would be able to answer that in a flash..

I bought a 5101 from GPE not that long ago....

thats why i ask seems a cheap alternative.

The 6116 is a 24 pin CMOS ram and the 5101 is a 22 pin RAM.  Completlly different Pinouts.

Easier to buy a 5101.  Do you need some?  I have a few available at 10 each.

I've heard of 6116 being used as a substitute, but that was a while ago. 5101 are available from several sources - I'd stick with them.

maybe in the US they have an adapter socket/kit manufactured?  Seems like a lot of work.  Like Strangways (twist of fate) states plenty of 5101 still around.

I have ordered 5101 ram from ED in the past and have a spare, but when i read that on clays guide i thought it was worth looking into, but have found out now that its not worth the trouble . thanks guys.

There's an adapter board available here in Australia from a guy in WA (http://www.pinballrepair.iinet.net.au/ram.html), but the adapter is more expensive than the RAM, assuming you can still get it.

Unfortunately the pinouts of the 6116 and 5101 are quite different so there is a fair bit of work involved in rewiring to substitute a 6116.

thanks for the info ajlaird, looks a bit messy but ok if you are unable to get the 5101's.
so far the best option is to order from GPE which is not a problem as there is usually other stuff required from ED as well.
