Comments, questions and memorys.....
« on: August 15, 2010, 09:45:19 PM »
Well Ive spent many hours reading the forums with great interest and on Saturday cleaned out a load of crap from a spare room which I have a plan to turn into a games room, at this stage I only have two machines which are in the lounge.

Im wondering...is there a forsale section on this board thats hidden until a certain number of posts etc? The only place I can see pinballs forsale is on ebay, and most are either interstate or appear to be very expensive? Is there anywhere else to look for used machines or is it just a matter of time getting to know other collectors?

(sorry for the werid disjointed post, Im typing stuff as I remember it)

I noticed (and remember it from when I was younger), an "FJ Holden" pinball on Ebay, It would seem improbable that a US manufacturer would do a production run for such a small market, and Im wondering if the Australian maker actually built this machine locally from scratch or was it a US machine with local artwork?

I remember as a kid there was a min-golf park thing in the centre of Phillip Island (Vic), it was chock full of pinballs and I seem to remember even back then (the early 70's) that some of the machines were very old...wonder what happend to them all?

I think the for sale section opens up around the 20 or 30 post mark.

FJ Holden was made by Hankin.

I played this game when I was a kid and loved it.  I used to sweep the games room floor each morning for a $1.00 just to play....!

Douggie - You need 20 posts to be able to view the Treader section. This rule was implemented a while ago whereby a member would join with one intention - to sell pinballs, but not contribute to the site.  It happened a few times, so we simply added a rule to prevent from this from happening. I guess you just need a few more posts and you will see it - it is set within the forum software, so just keep posting !

Hankin was an Australian company that made around seven machines. They were made locally and not many were exported. They are still highly collectible.

You will find that collectors place their machines for sale quite often on this forum. The other alternatives are the Sponsors and other dealers.

Ive played quite a few of the modern machines lately, and to be honest none of them really grab me at all, technical marvels Im sure, but the playfields just seem too "busy" for my tastes, I had a look at lord of the rings and it did my head in just looking at it. I like the late 70's and early 80's stuff, my wishlist is to have KISS, Evel Knievel, Charlies Angels and stuff like that, dont know about the last two but from the prices Ive seen for KISS the only way I'll get one is to sell my business and get into organised crime :)

Interesting to note, my young bloke (16) who Im having trouble getting off my 2 machines says his mates all laughed at him when he told them he had pinnys at home, they are all into xbox rubbish and online games, Ive never liked video games (other than the classic text adventure that I spent months on a CP/M based machine in the late 70's) and the whole space invaders thing never grabbed me (although I'd give my left one for one of those car racing machines with the mono screens and the real steering wheel I saw a bloke on here doing up)

Im in a very small country town (population under 1000) and a while back (a couple of years ago) the bloke in the fish and chip shop was approached by a greek bloke to site a pinball in his shop, no money up front and 50-50 profits....I cant remember what game it was but the chippy owner told me his cut was over $150 a week plus all the extra food and drinks he sold. He sold the business to some city trendsetter types who thought a pinball didnt fit the "vibe" of the business and proceeded to artistically paint the building and tried selling more healthy food at higher prices and went bankrupt shortly after.

all the best

Pinball will always be more challenging than XBox and the other crap. Pinball is not part of the current generation's "pop culture". My nieces and nephews basically "wear out" my machines when they are at my place. They actually "line up" to play them. The Wii is barely played at our place. I guess you have to "grow up" around them..

I repaired an FJ pin a few months ago for a guy in Fredrickton (NSW midnorth coast), I'd never seen one in the flesh before then, i think he said he paid about $500 for his FJ!! It was in REAL nice condition too!! Ian (howzat on here) came with me when i went to do the work on it, so we both got to play a few games on it when i got it going $#$ $#$. Not a bad game.. though it was a bit difficult to play i thought.. didnt seem to flow well to me, or maybe it was just me.. ie i just cant play for shit  :lol :lol

Douggie, similar to you I also love the pins from the early 70's through to the early 80's.  There's just something about the design and feel for this era of pins - much simpler than the following years, but still have great action.  Plus it saw the evolution from EM to SS, so it's great to have a bit of both (can't imagine having just EMs or just SSs).  I have nothing against the "next gen" pins after this era, but they don't appeal to me (to each their own, of course).  I suppose that period in my life from around 1975 to 1984 was when I was in my pin heydays.

It will be interesting what becomes of pinball 10, 15, 20 years from now.  Once our generation eventually passes to the next, hope there is the interest to keep it going.

Right on Steve. 70s and early 80s hold my best memories of pins.
Douggie - I agree. Most modern machines are too busy for me. I find it hard to have a strategy with them other than slam the balls with the flippers
Wanted: GTB Aquarius backglass. Any playfield bits and backglasses from any EMs - nothing is junk to me.
