1991 Data East Star Trek display
« on: September 08, 2010, 09:12:29 PM »
G'day Lads,

Is there any one out there who can repair a Display for a 91 Start Trek??? A mate at work is either trying to source one new or have his repaired if possible. Basically its missing two lines.

Cheers,

Rich.......................................................

Hi Rich,

I have seen 3 or 4 of the small DMDs fail over the last few months. If is is only missing a couple of lines then it could well be that a few of the pins on the side of the DMD glass have broken away and these can sometimes be repaired.
I ended up purchasing a PinLED replacement for a TMNT is was happy with the result. Initally the new display would sometimes display rubbish or freeze after a few minutes. Even though I was measuring 4.96V right on the display, the fault was traced back to a few faulty caps on the power supply.

regards Derel

Hi, send it up to me in QLD.

Beaky (Andrew-pinball tech & forum member here) can usually fix them. I have a Star trek 25th we can test it in after Andy repairs it.
It shld only be apx $10 each way with postage. We wont charge for the repair. Happy to help out. Andy just diagnosed and sorted a DMD on another one of my machines, and like stated before, it can just be a few solder joins on the side of the glass.  PM me for a address. Cheers.  ^^^

If its the one the cave man gave me to fix then its all fixed.
It had 2 broken tracks on the pcb (looks like cockroach pee had been on it) which i repaired with wire wrapping wire & 1 dry joint inside the edge of the glass.
i was able to reflow the solder joint inside the glass by heating the wire going into the display and reflowing the solder inbetween the 2 pieces of glass.
the trick is heating the wire were it goes into the glass with only just enough heat to just melt the solder as the trace that is inside the glass has a very low melting point and once it has been over heated then its impossible to fix.
You will need a variable temp soldering iron with a very fine tip to do the above.

Sounds like rocket science. Well done!
