How do you protecting metal parts after removing rust?
« on: August 20, 2010, 11:53:29 AM »
I have been busy removing the rust and corrosion on all the under playfield parts on my next gen.
while removing the rust and corrosion the zinc coating is also removed, the question i have is how long will it be before all the parts start to rust again?
I was thinking of getting all the parts re zinced. There is a place locally that can do it and there minimum cost is $35.
I will be taking all the parts in and getting a quote.
I could clear coat them as i do with the lockdown assembly but there are areas that the ball will wear the paint away.
I will let you guys know what the price is to get all the parts done. If it is not to much i will get them re Zinced.

I left the playfield rests bare after cleaning and they showed rust within a month.  I got them replated.  You shouldn't need to clear them after that.  The $35 minimum charge is pretty good.  Most down here have a $100 minimum.  There is also no point cleaning the existing parts before you take them unless you want to polish out any pitting.  If there is any pitting from rust it will show after they have been re-plated.  They acid dip to remove the contaminants and that gets rid of the rust and pretty much everything else.

35 bucks to re-zinc isn't unreasonable. Another alternative is waxing, although replating would work too.

Some people chrome the playfield standoffs, power box, prop rod etc, too.

The metal polish I use has a rust inhibitor in it, and I've not had parts re-rust after using it.
