Flash Display problems
« on: February 25, 2011, 11:26:46 AM »
Hi

My displays on my Flash have always been a little temperamental , sometimes the last "0" on players 2 and 4 work and sometimes they dont, sometimes no displays work at all but a wack on the side of the back box (fonzie style) always turns them back on. Anyway the latest problem is one of the little lines from each player display and credit and ball in play displays have dropped out so that it doesnt display the full digit (i/e a six might light up as a five). Its the same line missing on each display.

Any ideas appreciated .

Thanks...Tim

Sound like a connector issue remove the backglass and remove each plug and push ten back on.
  See how this goes.

Like Daniel said, more than likely a connector problem, but displays that are missing digit segments can be because of failing/ failed resistors located on the master display board.
Simply have a look and any obviously burnt resistors will need to be changed, but its a good idea also to check each one with a multimeter to see if they are open circuit or the wrong value.

If you can get a manual with circuit diagrams they will show you the correct values for these resistors, in fact any Williams machine from that era will use the same displays too.

Its also a good idea to give the edge connector on the actual display board a light sand with wet "n dry paper and clean the gunk off with metho. I did this on a Flash I fixed up and it did improve it a bit.

Missing /intermittent digits could also be the connector on the MPU board for the display digit outputs, J6 and/or J7 (the two top righthand side connectors on the MPU), or cracked solder on the J6 or J7 header pins. Had the same problem on my Stellar Wars, digits going out and it ended up being bad solder joints on these MPU connector header pins.
